Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scrip and Staff: Meditations of a Wayfarer John Bunyan, the famous author of the "Pilgrim's Progress," was in his youth extremely wicked, and afterward became one of the holiest men of his times, through God's saving love and the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the period of his conversion from sin to righteousness, and in the earlier years of his Christian experience, he suffered greatly from the temptations and assaults of our spiritual adversary for many months, deriving only brief intervals of comfort from his religious life. In one of his dark hours he seemed to hear God saying to him, "I loved thee before thou didst sin; I loved thee while thou wert sinning; and I loved thee after thou hadst sinned." In his condition at that time, it gave him considerable satisfaction, and is worth a few moments' consideration. Book Rod and Staff Or Correction and Comfort

Download or read book Rod and Staff Or Correction and Comfort written by C. E. Copp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-20 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rod and Staff or Correction and Comfort: A Book of Religious Miscellany This. Volume, compiled and published at the request of friends, is made up mainly of the author's contribu tions which have appeared in various religious papers Since his first literary venture, October 17, 1877, along with unpublished pieces thereto added, all of which is carefully arranged, in proper order, so that beginning with the Bible as a rule of faith and practice, the Script ure themes that follow fall in naturally in the order in which they should come to our understanding. The black-board cuts are the work of the author, a farmer's son from the Granite State, born in 1848, and beginning his Christian life January 8, 1876, and who although not an engraver, appears in the role of the artist, while his professional work with the brush during seventeen years past as master car painter for a leading New England railroad company is only excelled by the artistic pen-work exhibited in this valuable volume, where like his flowers on Nahum's Chariots, the apples of gold are set in baskets of Silver. Book The History of Israel and Judah

Download or read book The History of Israel and Judah written by Alfred Edersheim and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Israel and Judah: From the Reign of Ahab to the Decline of the Two Kingdoms Thus much must for the present suffice - the more so, as in the next Volume (which will conclude the Old Testament History) the opportunity will necessarily present itself for larger retrospect and wider survey. It only remains to add that the treatment of the subject in this Volume will be found in ac cordance with the progressive plan of this work, repeatedly in dicated in previous Volumes. Alike the critical and exegetical notes will be found more frequent and more full, and the general treatment more detailed, and designed for more ad vanced readers. A new Element in the present Volume is the light brought to bear on this period from the ancient monu ments. We live in days when more attention than ever before is given to the critical study of the Old Testament 3 in days also when attacks are chiefly directed against the trustworthiness, the credibility, and, as it seems to us, the Divine Authority, in its true sense, of the Old Testament. There are those, we will gladly believe, who can disjoint, and in logical connection with it, re-interpret the Old Testament, and yet retain their full faith in its direct Divine character, and in its preparation for the Christ. We must frankly confess that we are not of their number. There is, indeed, a general Divine character in the Old Testament, and a general preparation in it for the New, whatever historical views we may take of it, or whatever inter pretations we may give of it. We would even advance beyond this, and say that Christ and Christianity have their absolute truth, quite irrespective of the Old Testament. But to us at least Jesus of Nazareth as the Christ is the direct outcome of the Old Testament, as well as its higher fulfilment: not only a light to lighten the Gentiles, but, and even in this very respect also the glory of Thy people Israel. Book Languages scripts and Chinese texts in East Asia

Download or read book Languages scripts and Chinese texts in East Asia written by Peter Francis Kornicki and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese Writing and the Rise of the Vernacular in East Asia is a wide-ranging study of vernacularization in East Asia - not only China, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, but also societies that no longer exist, such as the Tangut and Khitan empires. Peter Kornicki takes the reader from the early centuries of the common era, when the Chinese script was the only form of writing and Chinese Buddhist, Confucian, and medical texts spread throughout East Asia, through the centuries when vernacular scripts evolved, right up to the end of the nineteenth century when nationalism created new roles for vernacular languages and vernacular scripts. Through an examination of oral approaches to Chinese texts, it shows how highly-valued Chinese texts came to be read through the prism of the vernaculars and ultimately to be translated. This long process has some parallels with vernacularization in Europe, but a crucial difference is that literary Chinese was, unlike Latin, not a spoken language. As a consequence, people who spoke different East Asian vernaculars had no means of communicating in speech, but they could communicate silently by means of written conversation in literary Chinese; a further consequence is that within each society Chinese texts assumed vernacular garb: in classes and lectures, Chinese texts were read and declaimed in the vernaculars. What happened in the nineteenth century and why are there still so many different scripts in East Asia? How and why were Chinese texts dethroned, and what replaced them? These are some of the questions addressed in Chinese Writing and the Rise of the Vernacular in East Asia.

Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s.
