Book excerpt: By November 2012, the syndicated comic strip "Stacy's Coffee" was hitting its stride as a success in newspapers around the country, with a potentially bright future. Its growing popularity was evidenced by positive feedback from readers, as well as unanticipated reflective discussion in the online community. But few people knew that its creator, cartoonist Mark London, was a tortured man who had little to laugh about in his own life. Both he and his estranged wife were suffering from unimaginable loss, and their failure to grieve properly had resulted in a collapsing marriage, a return to both former and new self-destructive habits, and an intense blame upon themselves and each other. Behind the enamored strip was a man who was fighting his own demons and, in a way, he was also lost in the nostalgic relationship that he shared with his own work.

Book Save the People

Book excerpt: "Save the People is engaging, funny, affecting and delightful. You'll never have more fun learning science." --Stuart Gibbs, bestselling author of the Spy School series "Serious science and great gags, with a bit of hope thrown in." --Steven Sheinkin, bestselling author of Bomb and Fallout An action-packed look at past, present, and future threats to humanity's survival--with an ultimately reassuring message that humans probably have a few more millennia in us. Scientists estimate that 99% of all species that have ever existed are now extinct. Whoa. So, it's not unreasonable to predict humans are doomed to become fossil records as well. But what could lead to our demise? Supervolcanos? Asteroids? The sun going dark? Climate change? All the above?! Humans--with our big brains, opposable thumbs, and speedy Wi-Fi--may be capable of avoiding most of these nightmares. (The T. rex would be super jealous of our satellites.) But we're also capable of triggering world-ending events. Learning from past catastrophes may be the best way to avoid future disasters. Packed with science, jokes, and black and white illustrations, Save the People! examines the worst-case scenarios that could (but hopefully won't) cause the greatest mass extinction--our own!

Book The South American Coffee Shop Chronicles

Download or read book The South American Coffee Shop Chronicles written by Ross W. Nielsen and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-03-23 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some people think I didn't have a childhood, as they think I was born on a cold and wet Saturday morning at the age of 23 in the front bar of The Lord Forrest Hotel. I did in fact have a childhood, but it was spent on a wheat farm, but I hated dirt and country music so as soon I was old enough I left the farm. I ended up in a country city doing a trade ( motor mechanic ) for four years. After I had my trade papers in my hand I was out of there and down to the big smoke, a city of millions of people. I owe that city a lot as it turned me from a country youth into a man. I discovered many things, including motorcycles, race cars, the ocean, sailing and diving and also bookshops. I hated school with a passion, but I am thankful to my teachers who taught me how to read. The bookshops in that big city were amazing, every Saturday morning would see me on a bus heading into the city and I would comb the bookshops. Those bookshops were a turning point in my life that put me on a very different road to the farm boy I was supposed to be. From there I wandered around the country and finally landed a job in South America working for an American company. South America, it's people and the crazy guys I worked with was another turning point in my life. In my travels I noticed people seemed to live by a script, a script for life. Some poor souls had been given a bad script but they still lived by it, I worked out who gave them these scripts, good or bad. I discovered one's life script is vital in how we live our lives. One can rewrite one's script, but your belief system will try to stop you from changing your script. Firstly you have to learn how to over come your belief system, and then rewrite your script.

Book The Good Lieutenant

  • Publisher : Farrar, Straus and Giroux
  • Release : 2016-06-07
  • ISBN : 0374712557

Download or read book The Good Lieutenant written by Whitney Terrell and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Good Lieutenant literally starts with a bang as an operation led by Lieutenant Emma Fowler of the Twenty-seventh Infantry Battalion goes spectacularly wrong. Men are dead--one, a young Iraqi, by her hand. Others were soldiers in her platoon. And the signals officer, Dixon Pulowski. Pulowski is another story entirely--Fowler and Pulowski had been lovers since they met at Fort Riley in Kansas. From this conflagration, The Good Lieutenant unspools backward in time as Fowler and her platoon are guided into disaster by suspicious informants and questionable intelligence, their very mission the result of a previous snafu in which a soldier had been kidnapped by insurgents. And then even further back, before things began to go so wrong, we see the backstory unfold from points of view that usually are not shown in war coverage--a female frontline officer, for one, but also jaded career soldiers and Iraqis both innocent and not so innocent. Ultimately, as all these stories unravel, what is revealed is what happens when good intentions destroy, experience distorts, and survival becomes everything. Brilliantly told and expertly captured by a terrific writer at the top of his form, Whitney Terrell's The Good Lieutenantis a gripping, insightful, necessary novel about a war that is proving to be the defining tragedy of our time.
