Book In the New World

Download or read book In the New World written by Peter Hyun and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1995-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924 seventeen-year-old Peter Hyun arrived in Hawaii with three younger siblings, leaving behind family and friends in Japanese-occupied Seoul and the Korean community of exiles in Shanghai. The early chapters of this spirited autobiographical account, the sequel to Man Sei!, recount Hyun's life as a young Korean coming of age in Hawaii and as a college student studying philosophy and theatre arts in Indiana. After college, Hyun moved to New York and in 1930 began working as an assistant stage manager with Eva LeGallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre. He later went on to direct theatre companies in New York, Massachusetts, California, and Montreal. As Hyun was one of only a handful of minorities working in the avant garde theatre in the 1930s and 1940s, his account contributes to our understanding of the place of Asians in art outside the mainstream. He also provides a personal perspective on key periods in American race relations, particularly during World War II and the Korean War. In the New World celebrates a rich life full of diversity. Throughout his life, Hyun believed that the making of a Korean American was essentially a cultural marriage - a marriage often requiring a lengthy and difficult engagement to succeed. In the New World is the story of Hyun's engagement, with all its triumphs and misfortunes, told with candor and wit. Peter Hyun died in 1993 at the age of eighty-seven.

Book Developing Country Debt and Economic Performance Volume 1

Download or read book Developing Country Debt and Economic Performance Volume 1 written by Jeffrey D. Sachs and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2007-12-01 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For dozens of developing countries, the financial upheavals of the 1980s have set back economic development by a decade or more. Poverty in those countries has intensified as they struggle under the burden of an enormous external debt. In 1988, more than six years after the onset of the crisis, almost all the debtor countries were still unable to borrow in the international capital markets on normal terms. Moreover, the world financial system has been disrupted by the prospect of widespread defaults on those debts. Because of the urgency of the present crisis, and because similar crises have recurred intermittently for at least 175 years, it is important to understand the fundamental features of the international macroeconomy and global financial markets that have contributed to this repeated instability. This project on developing country debt, undertaken by the National Bureau of Economic Research, provides a detailed analysis of the ongoing developing country debt crisis. The project focuses on the middle-income developing countries, particularly those in Latin America and East Asia, although many lessons of the study should apply as well to other, poorer debtor countries. The project analyzes the crisis from two perspectives, that of the international financial system as a whole (volume 1) and that of individual debtor countries (volumes 2 and 3).

Book excerpt: Now a NAACP-nominated Limited Series on BET! Hidden away near the end of Long Island, New York, is a community where affluent African Americans, their friends, and the wannabes have secretly vacationed for more than 75 years. Unlike the bluffs of Martha’s Vineyard, black folks here own five miles of prime beachfront. With a mix of legacy families, new money, hangers-on, and thirsty developers, drama can never be far behind in a place called . . . the BLACK HAMPTONS. The Brittonsare the owners of Amistad Bank, the nation’s largest minority-owned bank. They consider themselves the “First Family” of the Black Hamptons and have owned their estate home for three generations. Their matriarch, Carolyn Britton, and her two sons, Malcolm and Martin, are not to be played with. They truly embody the Black Hamptons’ old guard and will do whatever they feel is necessary to maintain their place at the top. The Johnsons are relatively new to the Black Hamptons, having summered there only five years. Sometimes they still feel like outsiders, but that might be because Anthony Johnson is viewed as competition by the Brittons. He’s the handsome CEO of Sydney Tech, a company he built from the ground up. Many people consider him the most powerful man in the Black Hamptons, but don’t say that around the Britton boys. When a piece of land comes up for sale in this exclusive community, it sparks a war between the Brittons and the Johnsons. It’s old money versus new money, and neither family seems willing to compromise. Will the tension between them shatter any hopes of a peaceful summer?

Book excerpt: Me and the legendary Zimmerman twins--it’s a friendship made in geek heaven. And it all started back when I worked for the NSA... My best friend Basia dragged me to the beach for her idea of a vacation. All those annoying people, sand in embarrassing places--not exactly R & R for a girl who doesn’t like the sun, the ocean or bathing suits. I couldn’t wait to get back to work. But things started looking up when I ran into Elvis and Xavier Zimmerman. We discovered we had a lot in common: gaming, anchovies, hacking. After that, the vacation was perfect--until I accidentally broke some poor guy’s fingers. Then Broken-Fingered Guy disappeared, and things got really dicey. With the Secret Service and a bunch of thugs suddenly after me, all I wanted was to solve the mystery and enjoy what was left of my vacation--preferably alive.
