Book excerpt: Stable Isotope Geochemistry is an introduction to the use of stable isotopes in the geosciences. It is subdivided into three parts: i) theoretical and experimental principles, ii) fractionation processes of light and heavy elements, iii) the natural variations of geologically important reservoirs. In the last decade, major advances in multicollector-ICP-mass-spectrometry enable the precise determination of a wide range of transition and heavy elements. Progress in analysing the rare isotopes of certain elements allows the distinction between mass-dependent and mass-independent fractionations. These major advances in analytical techniques make an extended new edition necessary. Special emphasis has been given to the growing field of “non-traditional” isotope systems. Many new references have been added, which will enable quick access to recent literature.

Book excerpt: Our colleagues from the French-speaking parts of Switzerland - the Suisses romands - and above all the committee of the 3rd Cycle, e Earth Sciences (3 Cycle, Sciences de la Terre) honored us by asking us to give a course on Isotope Geology for the year 1977. The course, entitled Evaluation et Interpretation des Donnees Isotopiques (eval uation and Interpretation of Isotopic Data), was intended to inform earth scientists, graduate and postgraduate, from the western Swiss Universities on the subject of Isotope Geology. Such courses usually consist of two parts: lectures and excursions. Thus, in March 1977, we gave such a two-week course at the Miner alogical Institute of the University of Berne. The first week was devoted essentially to the methods of dating, the second week to the behavior of stable isotopes. In July 1977, on the occasion of an excursion to the Central and Western Alps, we were able to demonstrate our results. Guest professors were invited to make contributions to the course.

Book excerpt: Details of the biogeochemical cycles and the dominant mechanisms present in Precambrian remain heavily debated topics. The events of the Late Proterozoic onset to glaciations and what types of early life existed in the Archean are two of the many provoking topics within the Precambrian. We set out to improve the understanding of these geologic intervals by examining stable isotopic signatures and molecular fossils (biomarkers) in Late Proterozoic and Mesoarchean ages sedimentary rocks in Northwestern Territories, Canada and Pilbara, Western Australia, respectively. This thesis presents sulfur, carbon, oxygen and nitrogen stable isotopic data along with distribution of steranes and hopanes biomarkers. Geochemical data is analyzed in the context of elucidating the key biological and environmental factors involved in the Mesoarchean marine biosphere and the Late Proterozoic onset of glaciations. Stable isotopic analysis of the Gorge Creek Group in Pilbara, Western Australia reveals organisms capable of microbial sulfur disproportionation were likely the dominant biological players in Mesoarchean deep-ocean sulfur cycling. Biomarker and isotopic proxies of the Coppercap Formation reveal diverse biological activity directly prior to the Sturtian Glaciation with communities of green and purple sulfur bacteria as well as methanotrophs and cyanobacteria. Possible environmental implications of these communities co-existing are explained in context of changes in ocean chemistry and the diversification of eukaryotic life.

The first three chapters focus on the theory and experimental data base for equilibrium, disequilibrium, and kinetics of stable isotope exchange reactions among geologically important minerals and fluids. The fourth chapter discusses the primordial oxygen isotope variations in the solar system prior to formation of the Earth, along with a discussion of isotopic anomalies in meteorites. The fifth chapter discusses isotopic variations in the Earth's mantle and the sixth chapter reviews the variations in the isotopic compositions of natural waters on our planet. In Chapters 7, 8, 9 and 10, these isotopic constraints and concepts are applied to various facets of the origin and evolution of igneous rocks, bringing in much material on radiogenic isotopes as well, because these problems require a multi-dimensional attack for their solution. In Chapters 11 and 12, the problems of hydrothermal alteration by meteoric waters and ocean water are considered, together with discussions of the physics and chemistry of hydrothermal systems and the 18O/16O history of ocean water. Finally, in Chapters 13 and 14, these concepts are applied to problems of metamorphic petrology and ore deposits, particularly with respect to the origins of the fluids involved in those processes.
