Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precise measurements of the calcium (Ca) isotopes have provided constraints on Ca cycling at global and local scales, and quantified rates of carbonate diagenesis in marine sedimentary systems. Key to applying Ca isotopes as a geochemical tracer of Ca cycling, carbonate (bio)mineralization, and diagenesis is an understanding of the impact of multiple factors potentially impacting Ca isotopes in the rock record. These factors include variations in stable isotopic fractionation factors, the influence of local-scale Ca cycling on Ca isotopic gradients in carbonate settings, carbonate dissolution and reprecipitation, and the relationship between the Ca isotopic composition of seawater and mineral phases that record the secular evolution of seawater chemistry.

Book The Application of Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry and Two Enriched Stable Isotope Tracers in Studies of Calcium Metabolism in Human Lactation

Download or read book The Application of Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry and Two Enriched Stable Isotope Tracers in Studies of Calcium Metabolism in Human Lactation written by Arthur Bogoias and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calcium is an important mineral for several physiological functions in humans and its absorption and transfer kinetics within the body are the subject of ongoing research. In this study two stable calcium isotope tracers were administered to lactating human subjects in trace quantities. The quantities of tracer excreted in urine samples (taken daily) were calculated from isotopic ratios measured in urine calcium extracts using thermal ionisation mass spectrometry. From the measured data it was possible to obtain precise determinations of fractional intestinal absorption, tracer depletion or washout profiles as tracer was excreted over time. A three-phase model of tracer washout was evident which strongly supported a three-exponential model for calcium transfer after initial intestinal absorption. In the second part of this study, ingestion of dietary calcium supplements lifted total calcium intake well above the recommended daily intake. The effect on fractional intestinal absorption of excess calcium intake by women in lactation was then determined. The economics of research in this area is dependent upon the high cost of stable isotope tracers and the mass spectrometric technique. Experimental procedures had to be developed to enable very small tracer doses to be used and high precision in measurement of isotopic ratios to be achieved. This study outlines the procedures developed and the precision that could be routinely achieved.

Book New Techniques in Nutritional research

Download or read book New Techniques in Nutritional research written by Roger Whitehead and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New Techniques in Nutritional Research contains the proceedings of the Ninth Annual Bristol-Myers Squibb/Mead Johnson Symposium on Nutrition Research held on September 11-13, 1989 in Cambridge, England. The papers highlight a number of novel techniques that are currently used in nutritional research, including the doubly labeled water method; the labeled bicarbonate method; X-ray computed tomography; neutron activation analysis; magnetic resonance imaging; and the application of stable isotope tracers. Divided into four sections encompassing 20 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of stable isotopes and their applications in nutrition science, including vitamin research, and in the investigation of mineral metabolism. It then discusses modern approaches for measuring energy expenditure and body composition, classical and modern methods of anthropometry, measurement of bone mineral content in vivo, and imaging techniques in analysis of bone status. Nutritional scientists will find this book a useful source of information related to the field.

Book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences

Download or read book Isotopes for Medicine and the Life Sciences written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-01-27 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radioactive isotopes and enriched stable isotopes are used widely in medicine, agriculture, industry, and science, where their application allows us to perform many tasks more accurately, more simply, less expensively, and more quickly than would otherwise be possible. Indeed, in many casesâ€"for example, biological tracersâ€"there is no alternative. In a stellar example of "technology transfer" that began before the term was popular, the Department of Energy (DOE) and its predecessors has supported the development and application of isotopes and their transfer to the private sector. The DOE is now at an important crossroads: Isotope production has suffered as support for DOE's laboratories has declined. In response to a DOE request, this book is an intensive examination of isotope production and availability, including the education and training of those who will be needed to sustain the flow of radioactive and stable materials from their sources to the laboratories and medical care facilities in which they are used. Chapters include an examination of enriched stable isotopes; reactor and accelerator-produced radionuclides; partnerships among industries, national laboratories, and universities; and national isotope policy.

Book Human Calcium Metabolism Including Bone Resorption Measured with 41Ca Tracer

Download or read book Human Calcium Metabolism Including Bone Resorption Measured with 41Ca Tracer written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accelerator mass spectrometry is so sensitive to small quantities of 41Ca that it might be used as a tracer in the study of human calcium kinetics to generate unique kinds of data. In contrast with the use of other Ca isotopic tracers, 41Ca tracer can be so administered that the tracer movements between the various body pools achieve a quasi steady state. Resorbing bone may thus be directly measured. We have tested such a protocol against a conventional stable isotope experiment with good agreement.
