Book excerpt: This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications PARALLEL SOLUTION OF PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS is based on the proceedings of a workshop with the same title. The work shop was an integral part of the 1996-97IMA program on "MATHEMAT ICS IN HIGH-PERFORMANCE COMPUTING." I would like to thank Petter Bj0rstad of the Institutt for Informatikk, University of Bergen and Mitchell Luskin of the School of Mathematics, University of Minnesota for their excellent work as organizers of the meeting and for editing the proceedings. I also take this opportunity to thank the National Science Founda tion (NSF), Department of Energy (DOE), and the Army Research Office (ARO), whose financial support made the workshop possible. Willard Miller, Jr., Professor and Director v PREFACE The numerical solution of partial differential equations has been of major importance to the development of many technologies and has been the target of much of the development of parallel computer hardware and software. Parallel computers offer the promise of greatly increased perfor mance and the routine calculation of previously intractable problems. The papers in this volume were presented at the IMA workshop on the Paral lel Solution of PDE held during June 9-13, 1997. The workshop brought together leading numerical analysts, computer scientists, and engineers to assess the state-of-the-art and to consider future directions.

Book Mixed Finite Element Methods with Applications to Flow and Other Problems

Download or read book Mixed Finite Element Methods with Applications to Flow and Other Problems written by Max D. Gunzburger and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three problems were considered. These were finite element approximations due to the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations, for potential flows, and for acoustic eigenvalue problems. In all cases both theoretical error estimates and computer codes implementing the best algorithm were developed. We also report on other activities sponsored by the grant, i.e. student research and conference talks.

Book Mixed Finite Elements Compatibility Conditions and Applications

Download or read book Mixed Finite Elements Compatibility Conditions and Applications written by Daniele Boffi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-04-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early 70's, mixed finite elements have been the object of a wide and deep study by the mathematical and engineering communities. The fundamental role of this method for many application fields has been worldwide recognized and its use has been introduced in several commercial codes. An important feature of mixed finite elements is the interplay between theory and application. Discretization spaces for mixed schemes require suitable compatibilities, so that simple minded approximations generally do not work and the design of appropriate stabilizations gives rise to challenging mathematical problems. This volume collects the lecture notes of a C.I.M.E. course held in Summer 2006, when some of the most world recognized experts in the field reviewed the rigorous setting of mixed finite elements and revisited it after more than 30 years of practice. Applications, in this volume, range from traditional ones, like fluid-dynamics or elasticity, to more recent and active fields, like electromagnetism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sixth Edition of this influential best-selling book delivers the most up-to-date and comprehensive text and reference yet on the basis of the finite element method (FEM) for all engineers and mathematicians. Since the appearance of the first edition 38 years ago, The Finite Element Method provides arguably the most authoritative introductory text to the method, covering the latest developments and approaches in this dynamic subject, and is amply supplemented by exercises, worked solutions and computer algorithms.• The classic FEM text, written by the subject's leading authors • Enhancements include more worked examples and exercises• With a new chapter on automatic mesh generation and added materials on shape function development and the use of higher order elements in solving elasticity and field problemsActive research has shaped The Finite Element Method into the pre-eminent tool for the modelling of physical systems. It maintains the comprehensive style of earlier editions, while presenting the systematic development for the solution of problems modelled by linear differential equations. Together with the second and third self-contained volumes (0750663219 and 0750663227), The Finite Element Method Set (0750664312) provides a formidable resource covering the theory and the application of FEM, including the basis of the method, its application to advanced solid and structural mechanics and to computational fluid dynamics. - The classic introduction to the finite element method, by two of the subject's leading authors - Any professional or student of engineering involved in understanding the computational modelling of physical systems will inevitably use the techniques in this key text

Book Stabilized Finite Element Methods And Applications

Download or read book Stabilized Finite Element Methods And Applications written by Sen Lin and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We provide a overview of the residual-based stabilized Finite-Element methods, with both historical and theoretical treatment. Four standard model problems have been selected to present these stabilization methods. In particular, the variational multi-scale (VMS) method has been discussed in details. As an application, we have introduced an incompressible uid problem. A numerical scheme has been derived based on the VMS method, with demonstration of its numerical stability.

Book Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Differential Equations

Download or read book Adaptive Finite Element Methods for Differential Equations written by Wolfgang Bangerth and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-01-23 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key issues are a posteriori error estimation and it automatic mesh adaptation. Besides the traditional approach of energy-norm error control, a new duality-based technique, the Dual Weighted Residual method for goal-oriented error estimation, is discussed in detail. This method aims at economical computation of arbitrary quantities of physical interest by properly adapting the computational mesh. This is typically required in the design cycles of technical applications. For example, the drag coefficient of a body immersed in a viscous flow is computed, then it is minimized by varying certain control parameters, and finally the stability of the resulting flow is investigated by solving an eigenvalue problem. `Goal-oriented' adaptivity is designed to achieve these tasks with minimal cost. At the end of each chapter some exercises are posed in order to assist the interested reader in better understanding the concepts presented. Solutions and accompanying remarks are given in the Appendix.

Book Unified Lagrangian Formulation for Fluid and Solid Mechanics Fluid Structure Interaction and Coupled Thermal Problems Using the PFEM

Download or read book Unified Lagrangian Formulation for Fluid and Solid Mechanics Fluid Structure Interaction and Coupled Thermal Problems Using the PFEM written by Alessandro Franci and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-10-04 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book treats the derivation and implementation of a unified particle finite element formulation for the solution of fluid and solid mechanics, Fluid-Structure Interaction (FSI) and coupled thermal problems. FSI problems are involved in many engineering branches, from aeronautics to civil and biomedical engineering. The numerical method proposed in this book has been designed to deal with a large part of these. In particular, it is capable of simulating accurately free-surface fluids interacting with structures that may undergo large displacements, suffer from thermo-plastic deformations and even melt. The method accuracy has been successfully verified in several numerical examples. The thesis also contains the application of the proposed numerical strategy for the simulation of a real industrial problem. This thesis, defended at the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya in 2015, was selected (ex aequo) as the best PhD thesis in numerical methods in Spain for the year 2015 by the Spanish Society of Numerical Methods in Engineering (SEMNI).
