Book Stabilized Base Courses for Advanced Pavement Design Report 1 Literature Review and Field Performance Data

Download or read book Stabilized Base Courses for Advanced Pavement Design Report 1 Literature Review and Field Performance Data written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Federal Aviation Administration requires the use of stabilized bases for all pavements that will be required to support aircraft weighing 45,350 kg (100,000 lbs) or more. A literature review was performed to determine the current state of the art in terms of understanding stabilization mechanisms, design procedures, and considerations. Field data were collected to provide a review of the performance of many pavements at high-volume airports that support heavy aircraft loads. Field data collected included structural data in the form of nondestructive testing (NDT) performed with a falling weight deflectometer, visual condition survey using the pavement condition index (PCI) procedure, and construction and maintenance history data. The NDT was evaluated to determine modulus values for the various pavement layers. The PCI data were compared to historic PCI data to determine trends in performance. The construction and maintenance history records were reviewed to determine rehabilitation efforts required to maintain the pavements at appropriate levels.

Book Advanced Pavement Design Finite Element Modeling for Rigid Pavement Joints Report II Model Development

Download or read book Advanced Pavement Design Finite Element Modeling for Rigid Pavement Joints Report II Model Development written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution of a cement-stabilized base course to the strength of the rigid pavement structure is poorly understood. The objective of this research was to obtain data on the response of the ng'id pavement slab-joint-foundation system by conducting laboratory-scale experiments on jointed rigid pavement models and to develop a comprehensive three-dimensional (3D) finite element model of the rigid pavement slabjoint4oundation system that can be implemented in the advanced pavement design concepts currently under development by the Federal Aviation Administration. Evidence from experiments conducted on six laboratory-scale jointed rigid pavement models suggests that the joint efficiency depends upon the presence and condition of a stabilized base. The presence of cracking in the base and the degree of bonding between the slabs and the stabilized base course influence the structural capacity and load transfer capability of the rigid pavement structure. The finite element model developed in this research indicates that a comprehensive 3D finite element modeling technique provides a rational approach to modeling the structural response of the jointed rigid airport pavement system. Modeling features which are required include explicit 3D modeling of the slab continua, load transfer capability at the joint (modeled springs between the slabs), explicit 3D modeling of the base course continua, aggregate interlock capability across the cracks in the base course (again, modeled by springs across the crack), and contact interaction between the slabs and base course. The contact interaction model feature must allow gaps to open between the slab and base. Furthermore, where the slabs and base are in contact, transfer of shear stresses across the interface via friction should be modeled.

Book Mechanistic Design Concepts for Stabilized Base Pavements

Download or read book Mechanistic Design Concepts for Stabilized Base Pavements written by Marshall R. Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concepts for a mechanistic based thickness design procedure for high strength stabilized base pavements are presented. The proposed procedure is based on stabilized layer fatigue consumption and a ILLI-PAVE based algorithm for estimating stabilized layer flexural stress. The design concept can easily be developed into a comprehensive practical thickness design procedure for Illinois DOT utilization. Appendix A is a State-of-the-Art summary entitled "The Selection of Stress-Strain, Strength, and Fatigue Relationships for use in Mechanistic Design Procedures." Appendix B is an "ILLI-PAVE Data Base for Stabilized Base Pavements."

Book Incorporating Chemical Stabilization of the Subgrade in Pavement Design and Construction Practices

Download or read book Incorporating Chemical Stabilization of the Subgrade in Pavement Design and Construction Practices written by Anwer K. Al-Jhayyish and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this study were to determine how to incorporate the increase in stiffness of stabilized subgrade in the design of (Flexible?) pavement, and to examine the longevity of subgrade stabilization. Pavement sites that included stabilized subgrade across the state of Ohio were selected for field measurements. The field work included measurements made with portable seismic properties analyzer (PSPA), falling weight deflectometer (FWD), core collection, and dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) at multiple locations at each site. Original construction records, soil logs, and soil classification data were consulted as well. The FWD and DCP data were used to determine the resilient moduli and layer coefficients of aggregate base and stabilized subgrade and the resilient modulus of the unstabilized subgrade. Several methods of data analysis were used, including back calculation using finite element modeling from the FWD data and estimation of modulus from the DCP data and soil classification using procedures given in the 1993 AASHTO Guide for Design of Pavement Structures, ODOT's Pavement Design Manual, and a report for ODOT written by Eddie Chou [2004]. As borne out by FWD and DCP measurements, both cement stabilization and lime stabilization resulted in significant long term increases in the modulus of the stabilized subgrade relative to the unstabilized subgrade. The modulus and stiffness of the base is also increased because it is confined by the stabilized soil underneath and the pavement on top. The significant increase in the modulus of the base and stabilized subgrade has an impact on the thickness design of pavement.
