Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stabilization of the Foreign Exchanges The upheavals of the recent European War caused fluctuations in the exchange market which have world-wide significance. The course of the market for foreign bills forms a problem of well-nigh insoluble complexity to experts and bankers, and of great importance to the trader, the merchant and the manufacturer, and also to legis lative bodies, public treasuries, and the general public. Book Foreign Exchange

Download or read book Foreign Exchange written by Thomas York and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Exchange: Theory and Practice Foreign exchange is attracting more attention than any other branch of finance. The interest evinced is universal and is no longer confined to bankers, international traders, and financial writers, as was the case prior to the Great War. The general public is showing a decided disposition to acquaint itself with the dislocation of the exchanges brought about by the conflict. Nor is this interest likely to suffer much abatement, since normal conditions will probably not be restored in international financial relations for a number of years to come. The author's purpose in this book is to explain the operation of the exchanges between gold-standard countries under normal financial conditions. In a subsequent volume now in preparation he proposes to deal with the present irregular position of the exchanges, and with exchange between a gold- and a silver-standard country. It is quite impossible, however, to gain an adequate appreciation of the problem presented by the deranged condition of the exchanges unless their operation under the normal functioning of the commercial and financial machinery of the world is first thoroughly understood. The subject of foreign exchange, even in its greatest refinements, offers comparatively little difficulty after the student has once mastered the meaning of the gold standard, or what constitutes money in a gold-standard country. The present volume, therefore, attempts to give in the introductory chapter a complete understanding of this fundamental principle of all finance. A hypothetical method of treatment is followed in the theoretical part of the discussion. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Eastern Exchange Currency and Finance Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eastern Exchange Currency and Finance Classic Reprint written by William Frederick Spalding and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eastern Exchange, Currency and Finance This work has been written amidst many interruptions and distractions, but if it meet with the same kindly reception at the hands of the critics as that accorded to my previous book - Foreign Exchange and Foreign Bills - I shall feel more than satisfied. So far as I have been able to ascertain, there exists no treatise dealing entirely with the Eastern Exchanges; the present book is sent forth, therefore, in the hope that it may fill that gap in the literature of currency. Its preparation has called for a good deal of translation from foreign documents, and considerable searching into Government records, in which work I have been most ably assisted by representatives of the foreign governments concerned. My very sincere thanks in this respect are due to Their Excellencies the French Ambassador, the Minister for the Netherlands, the Persian Minister, the Siamese Minister; to Kengo Mori, Esq., Financial Commissioner to the Imperial Japanese Government; to Monsieur de la Chaume of the Commission de RavitailJement; and to the Consul-General for the United States of America. To the Managers of the Bank of Japan, the Banque de l'lndo-Chine, the Imperial Bank of Persia, the Java Bank, and the International Banking Corporation, I am indebted for a whole host of facts concerning operations which have come under their notice. Last, but not least, I owe a deep debt of gratitude to the Managers of the London Branch of the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation for their valuable counsel and aid in the elucidation of the many difficult problems connected with the silver exchanges. Book International Monetary Problems and the Foreign Exchanges Classic Reprint

Download or read book International Monetary Problems and the Foreign Exchanges Classic Reprint written by Egon Sohmen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from International Monetary Problems and the Foreign Exchanges The arrangement of the material may require some explanation. The opening chapter is a rather extensive introduction to some of the current problems of the real world. The systematic exposition of the theoretical groundwork begins with Chapter II. This may appear as a reversal of the logical order of treatment. The reasons for adopting it were frankly psychological: it has been my experience that many readers outside a small circle of theoretically oriented economists want to see for what purposes theoretical analysis is to be used before they are willing to invest time in it. Readers who are not so inclined may just as well start with Chapter II and read the introductory first chapter at the very end. Literature references in the text are kept to a minimum; instead, I have appended an annotated bibliography. Many economists appear to believe that members of our profession ought never to offer clear and unambiguous policy advice. Those who are thus inclined will not, I am afraid, be likely to derive comfort from the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Stabilizing the Dollar

Download or read book Stabilizing the Dollar written by Irving Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stabilizing the Dollar: A Plan to Stabilize the General Price Level, Without Fixing Individual Prices Tim fundamental fact on which the proposal of this book is based is that the purchasing power of the dollar is uncertain and variable, that is, that the price level is unstable. The war has caused the greatest upheaval of prices the world has ever seen. Inseparably connected with this upheaval is grave and world-wide industrial dis content. Because of this and because of the perplexity of business men as to future movement of prices, there has been much discussion going on of the question whether the level of war prices will drop or whether it can be stabilized. To show that permanent stability can be secured is the chief aim of this book; and a specific and de tailed plan for this purpose is presented. Book Stabilizing Currency and Preserving Economic Sovereignty Using the Grondona System

Download or read book Stabilizing Currency and Preserving Economic Sovereignty Using the Grondona System written by Collins, Patrick and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-01-07 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monetary instability experienced in recent years imposes enormous costs worldwide and has led to calls for a reset of the international monetary system. To avoid the problem arising again, the value of money must once again be defined in terms of some real commodity or commodities, as it has been for most of history. However, making currencies convertible into gold once again would be no panacea. A better alternative, first proposed in the 19th century and advocated in the 20th century, is for money to be made convertible into a range of commodities other than gold. Stabilizing Currency and Preserving Economic Sovereignty Using the Grondona System discusses how a sustainable basis for sovereign national money systems can be simply achieved by implementing the “Grondona System,” whereby the value of currency is stabilized by making it conditionally convertible into a range of primary commodities. Covering a range of topics such as economic growth, fiat money, and digital currencies, this book is ideal for policymakers, economists, investors, academicians, researchers, instructors, and students.

Book A Retrospective on the Classical Gold Standard 1821 1931

Download or read book A Retrospective on the Classical Gold Standard 1821 1931 written by Michael D. Bordo and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a timely review of the gold standard covering the 110 years of its operation until 1931, when Britain abandoned it in the midst of the Depression. Current dissatisfaction with floating rates of exchange has spurred interest in a return to a commodity standard. The studies in this volume were designed to gain a better understanding of the historical gold standard, but they also throw light on the question of whether restoring it today could help cure inflation, high interest rates, and low productivity growth. The volume includes a review of the literature on the classical gold standard; studies the experience with gold in England, Germany, Italy, Sweden, and Canada; and perspectives on international linkages and the stability of price-level trends under the gold standard. The articles and commentaries reflect strong, conflicting views among hte participants on issues of central bank behavior, purchasing-power an interest-rate parity, independent monetary policies, economic growth, the "Atlantic economy," and trends in commodity prices and long-term interest rates. This is a thoughtful and provocative book.

Book Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Stability

Download or read book Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Stability written by Hong Kong Economic Association and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Asian crisis of 1997-1998 was a major influence on macroeconomic thinking concerning exchange rate regimes, the functioning of international institutions, such as the IMF and the World Bank, and international contagion of macroeconomic instability from one country to another. Exchange Rate Regimes and Macroeconomic Stability offers perspectives on these issues from the viewpoints of two Nobel Laureates, an IMF economist, and Asian economists. This book contributes new ideas to the ongoing debate on the role of domestic monetary authorities and international institutions in reducing the likelihood of international financial crises, as well as the problems associated with various exchange rate regimes from the standpoint of macroeconomic stability. Overall, the chapters contained in this volume offer interesting perspectives, which have been stimulated by the recent events in the foreign exchange market. They provide a useful reference for anyone interested in the development of exchange rate regimes, and represent considerable reflection by economists half a century after Bretton Woods.
