Book Some Physical Considerations of the Hydrodynamic Stability of Parallel Flows of a Dusty Gas

Download or read book Some Physical Considerations of the Hydrodynamic Stability of Parallel Flows of a Dusty Gas written by J. T. C. Liu and published by . This book was released on 1965 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the physical implications of the stability of parallel flows of a dusty gas are studied. The energy balance of such a disturbed flow shows that the increase or decrease of the overall (gas plus particle) disturbance kinetic energy depends upon the relative magnitude of (1) energy dissipation due to the usual gas viscosity and augmented by the work done due to particle-gas interaction, and (2) energy conversion from the mean flow to the disturbances by both the gas and the particle Reynolds shear stresses. The viscous sublayer structure, where viscosity is known to be destabilizing, is deduced. It is shown that augmented phase shift of the gas velocity components, due to particle-gas interaction, tends to decrease the gas Reynolds shear stress but is eventually offset by their relative magnitude increase.

Book Stability and Suppression of Turbulence in Relaxing Molecular Gas Flows

Download or read book Stability and Suppression of Turbulence in Relaxing Molecular Gas Flows written by Yurii N. Grigoryev and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-08 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an in-depth systematic investigation of a dissipative effect which manifests itself as the growth of hydrodynamic stability and suppression of turbulence in relaxing molecular gas flows. The work describes the theoretical foundations of a new way to control stability and laminar turbulent transitions in aerodynamic flows. It develops hydrodynamic models for describing thermal nonequilibrium gas flows which allow the consideration of suppression of inviscid acoustic waves in 2D shear flows. Then, nonlinear evolution of large-scale vortices and Kelvin-Helmholtz waves in relaxing shear flows are studied. Critical Reynolds numbers in supersonic Couette flows are calculated analytically and numerically within the framework of both linear and nonlinear classical energy hydrodynamic stability theories. The calculations clearly show that the relaxation process can appreciably delay the laminar-turbulent transition. The aim of the book is to show the new dissipative effect, which can be used for flow control and laminarization. This volume will be of interest and useful to mechanical engineers, physicists, and mathematicians who specialize in hydrodynamic stability theory, turbulence, and laminarization of flows.

Book On the Stability of the Laminar Mixing Region Between Two Parallel Streams in a Gas

Download or read book On the Stability of the Laminar Mixing Region Between Two Parallel Streams in a Gas written by C. C. Lin and published by . This book was released on 1953 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rigorous developments of the mathematical theory of asymptotic solutions confirm previous methods of solution of the stability equations in a compressible fluid. This theory also shows that, at high Reynolds numbers, the damped oscillations in a strictly parallel main flow have a structure similar to that of the vorticity field in fully developed turbulent flow.

Book Fundamentals of Gas Particle Flow

Download or read book Fundamentals of Gas Particle Flow written by G Rudinger and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fundamentals of Gas-Particle Flow is an edited, updated, and expanded version of a number of lectures presented on the “Gas-Solid Suspensions course organized by the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics. Materials presented in this book are mostly analytical in nature, but some experimental techniques are included. The book focuses on relaxation processes, including the viscous drag of single particles, drag in gas-particles flow, gas-particle heat transfer, equilibrium, and frozen flow. It also discusses the dynamics of single particles, such as particles in an arbitrary flow, in a rotating gas, in a Prandtl-Meyer expansion, and in an oscillating flow. The remaining chapters of the book deal with the thermodynamics of gas-particle mixtures, steady flow through ducts, pressure waves, gas-particle jets, boundary layer, and momentum transfer. The experimental techniques included in this book present the powder feeders, the instrumentation on particle flow rate, velocity, concentration and temperature, and the measurement of the particle drag coefficient in a shock tube.

Book Numerical Calculation of the Stability of Parallel Flows

Download or read book Numerical Calculation of the Stability of Parallel Flows written by James H. Stuhmiller and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical approach to solving the two-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations is presented and is used to study the stability and evolution of disturbance in a boundary layer. Previous numerical approaches have used streamfunction-vorticity formulations that take advantage of the special properties of two-dimensional flow. The present method solves a finite-difference form of the momentum equations and may therefore be extended to three-dimensions more readily. Computations using this technique are compared with the result of linear stability theory for small amplitude disturbances and are found to give satisfactory agreement, while calculations at large amplitude support the conjecture that non-linear effects can be destabilizing.
