Book Stability of Parallel Flows

Download or read book Stability of Parallel Flows written by R. Betchov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stability of Parallel Flows provides information pertinent to hydrodynamical stability. This book explores the stability problems that occur in various fields, including electronics, mechanics, oceanography, administration, economics, as well as naval and aeronautical engineering. Organized into two parts encompassing 10 chapters, this book starts with an overview of the general equations of a two-dimensional incompressible flow. This text then explores the stability of a laminar boundary layer and presents the equation of the inviscid approximation. Other chapters present the general equations governing an incompressible three-dimensional flow, which requires the massive use of a computer. This book discusses as well the experimental studies on the oscillations of the boundary layer wherein the mean flow is affected by the presence of oscillations. The final chapter describes the concept of the stability of turbulent flows found in boundary layers, wakes, and jets. This book is a valuable resource for physicists, mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and researchers.

Book Stability and Transition in Shear Flows

Download or read book Stability and Transition in Shear Flows written by Peter J. Schmid and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 561 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed look at some of the more modern issues of hydrodynamic stability, including transient growth, eigenvalue spectra, secondary instability. It presents analytical results and numerical simulations, linear and selected nonlinear stability methods. By including classical results as well as recent developments in the field of hydrodynamic stability and transition, the book can be used as a textbook for an introductory, graduate-level course in stability theory or for a special-topics fluids course. It is equally of value as a reference for researchers in the field of hydrodynamic stability theory or with an interest in recent developments in fluid dynamics. Stability theory has seen a rapid development over the past decade, this book includes such new developments as direct numerical simulations of transition to turbulence and linear analysis based on the initial-value problem.

Book Introduction to Hydrodynamic Stability

Download or read book Introduction to Hydrodynamic Stability written by P. G. Drazin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-09 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instability of flows and their transition to turbulence are widespread phenomena in engineering and the natural environment, and are important in applied mathematics, astrophysics, biology, geophysics, meteorology, oceanography and physics as well as engineering. This is a textbook to introduce these phenomena at a level suitable for a graduate course, by modelling them mathematically, and describing numerical simulations and laboratory experiments. The visualization of instabilities is emphasized, with many figures, and in references to more still and moving pictures. The relation of chaos to transition is discussed at length. Many worked examples and exercises for students illustrate the ideas of the text. Readers are assumed to be fluent in linear algebra, advanced calculus, elementary theory of ordinary differential equations, complex variables and the elements of fluid mechanics. The book is aimed at graduate students but will also be very useful for specialists in other fields.

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Stability written by P. G. Drazin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-08-05 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydrodynamic stability is of fundamental importance in fluid mechanics and is concerned with the problem of transition from laminar to turbulent flow. Drazin and Reid emphasise throughout the ideas involved, the physical mechanisms, the methods used, and the results obtained, and, wherever possible, relate the theory to both experimental and numerical results. A distinctive feature of the book is the large number of problems it contains. These problems not only provide exercises for students but also provide many additional results in a concise form. This new edition of this celebrated introduction differs principally by the inclusion of detailed solutions for those exercises, and by the addition of a Foreword by Professor J. W. Miles.

Book Hydrodynamic Instabilities

    Book Details:
  • Author : François Charru
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2011-06-30
  • ISBN : 1139500546
  • Pages : 411 pages

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Instabilities written by François Charru and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The instability of fluid flows is a key topic in classical fluid mechanics because it has huge repercussions for applied disciplines such as chemical engineering, hydraulics, aeronautics, and geophysics. This modern introduction is written for any student, researcher, or practitioner working in the area, for whom an understanding of hydrodynamic instabilities is essential. Based on a decade's experience of teaching postgraduate students in fluid dynamics, this book brings the subject to life by emphasizing the physical mechanisms involved. The theory of dynamical systems provides the basic structure of the exposition, together with asymptotic methods. Wherever possible, Charru discusses the phenomena in terms of characteristic scales and dimensional analysis. The book includes numerous experimental studies, with references to videos and multimedia material, as well as over 150 exercises which introduce the reader to new problems.

Book Hydrodynamic Instability and Transition to Turbulence

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Instability and Transition to Turbulence written by Akiva M. Yaglom and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a complete revision of the part of Monin & Yaglom's famous two-volume work "Statistical Fluid Mechanics: Mechanics of Turbulence" that deals with the theory of laminar-flow instability and transition to turbulence. It includes the considerable advances in the subject that have been made in the last 15 years or so. It is intended as a textbook for advanced graduate courses and as a reference for research students and professional research workers. The first two Chapters are an introduction to the mathematics, and the experimental results, for the instability of laminar (or inviscid) flows to infinitesimal (in practice "small") disturbances. The third Chapter develops this linear theory in more detail and describes its application to particular problems. Chapters 4 and 5 deal with instability to finite-amplitude disturbances: much of the material has previously been available only in research papers.

Book On the Stability of Two Basic Parallel Flows

Download or read book On the Stability of Two Basic Parallel Flows written by Theodore Henry Gawain and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report provides a detailed technical outline and evaluation of research on the hydrodynamic stability of plane Poiseuille flow and of pipe Poiseuille flow. Each case involves significant discrepancies between the predictions of conventional theory and the results of actual experimental observations. In particular, the conventional theory fails completely to account for the well known instability of ordinary pipe flow. This report describes a more general theory which shows promise of overcoming the above limitations. The new theory involves a number of innovations in the formulation of some of the basic equations, in the formulation of certain boundary conditions, and in the formulation of the criterion of stability itself. The analytical work is essentially complete and preliminary calculations, while still of limited scope, appear to support the theory and are therefore quite encouraging.
