Book Stability Enhancement of Power System with Large scale Grid connected Wind Farm and PV System by Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

Download or read book Stability Enhancement of Power System with Large scale Grid connected Wind Farm and PV System by Superconducting Fault Current Limiter written by Kisuk Kim and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the Korean government’s new energy policy in 2017, high penetration of large-scale grid-connected renewable energy sources is soon expected to the Korean power system. This upcoming change will cause some problems on the grid, such as an increase of fault current level and a decrease of system inertia, which will affect negatively on the power systems stability. In this thesis, I suggest the utilization of a SFCL (superconducting fault current limiter) to improve the power system stability and reliability. The SFCL can limit fault current very quickly, efficiently, and automatically by using the quenching effect of the superconducting material. The focus of this work is to simulate different fault conditions and analyze the effectiveness of a hybrid SFCL for stable operation of a power system. The first part of this work is an introduction to superconductivity phenomenon and superconducting fault current limiters. Then, I modeled a hybrid SFCL with PSCAD/EMTDC software. Next, I set up simulation circuits on the IEEE 9 bus test system including wind farm and PV system. For the case studies, I considered the gradual increase of large-scale grid-connected wind farm and PV systems. Finally, I analyze the effect of a hybrid SFCL for power system stability.

Book Voltage Stability Enhancement of Wind Generator System Using Superconducting Fault Current Limiter

Download or read book Voltage Stability Enhancement of Wind Generator System Using Superconducting Fault Current Limiter written by Arnab Banik and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wind generator systems have stability problems during network faults. The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has the ability to prevent the magnitude of short-circuit current from increasing. This work proposes the SFCL device to enhance the voltage stability of a fixed-speed wind generator system. In this work the performance of SFCL is compared to that of the thyristor switched capacitor (TSC) method and the pitch control method. The comparison is done in terms of voltage stability enhancement, controller complexity and cost. The effectiveness of the proposed methodology is tested considering permanent and temporary, balanced and unbalanced faults in the power system model consisting of a wind generator and a synchronous generator. From the simulation results it is evident that performance of SFCL is better. On comparison it can be concluded that SFCL performs better when compared to TSC or pitch control method. Simulations are performed through Matlab/Simulink software.

Book Robust Control for Grid Voltage Stability High Penetration of Renewable Energy

Download or read book Robust Control for Grid Voltage Stability High Penetration of Renewable Energy written by Jahangir Hossain and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-07-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book makes the area of integration of renewable energy into the existing electricity grid accessible to engineers and researchers. This is a self-contained text which has models of power system devices and control theory necessary to understand and tune controllers in use currently. The new research in renewable energy integration is put into perspective by comparing the change in the system dynamics as compared to the traditional electricity grid. The emergence of the voltage stability problem is motivated by extensive examples. Various methods to mitigate this problem are discussed bringing out their merits clearly. As a solution to the voltage stability problem, the book covers the use of FACTS devices and basic control methods. An important contribution of this book is to introduce advanced control methods for voltage stability. It covers the application of output feedback methods with a special emphasis on how to bound modelling uncertainties and the use of robust control theory to design controllers for practical power systems. Special emphasis is given to designing controllers for FACTS devices to improve low-voltage ride-through capability of induction generators. As generally PV is connected in low voltage distribution area, this book also provides a systematic control design for the PV unit in distribution systems. The theory is amply illustrated with large IEEE Test systems with multiple generators and dynamic load. Controllers are designed using Matlab and tested using full system models in PSSE.

Book Short and Long term Stability of a 100 Renewable Autonomous Power System for a Typical Geographical Region

Download or read book Short and Long term Stability of a 100 Renewable Autonomous Power System for a Typical Geographical Region written by Chaminda Ranaweera and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2018-08-18 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research work is on Short- and Long-term Stability of a 100% Renewable Autonomous Power System for a Typical Geographical Region. It is concerned with understanding, modelling, analysing and mitigating power system stability problems associated with 100 percent renewable electrical power system. The complexity of power systems is continually increasing because of the growth in asynchronous interconnections and use of new power electronic based technologies for solar and wind power integrations. At the same time, regulatory constraints have forced utilities to increase the renewable energy share on the power systems. This research mainly deals with maximizing the Non-Conventional Renewable Energy (NCRE) share in the power system. Implementation of 100 percent renewable electric power system is no longer a myth. However, the system requires a large energy storage capacity for full supply with renewable energy in the electricity sector and new large scale of synchronous inertia shall be added to the system for frequency stability. Furthermore, necessary measures have to be taken for maintaining power system oscillations and damping which occur due to frequent power disturbances from wind and solar energy sources. However, the implementation of 100 percent renewable electrical power system depends on the many other things such as the financial capability, resources availability, etc.

Book Transient Stability Improvement of Power Transmission Grid by Controlled Fault Current Limiters Considering Cyber Attacks

Download or read book Transient Stability Improvement of Power Transmission Grid by Controlled Fault Current Limiters Considering Cyber Attacks written by Mohammad A. Sadi and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation proposes the bridge type fault current limiter (BFCL) as well as parallel resonance type fault current limiter (PRFCL) to enhance the transient stability of multi-machine power system. Fuzzy logic controller as well as neural network predictive controller is proposed for controlling the operation of BFCL. Further, a nonlinear static controller is proposed for controlling the operation of PRFCL. An optimal reclosing technique of circuit breakers is adopted. In order to see the effectiveness of the proposed fault current limiters, their performance is compared wit that of other auxiliary devices. Moreover, the effects of cyber-attack on the performance of BFCL controllers to improve the power system stability are investigated. Genetic algorithm (GA) is applied to optimally tune the controller parameters. Simulations are performed by using the Matlab/Simulink software in different test power systems. Simulation results of both balanced and unbalanced permanent and temporary faults at different points of the test systems indicate that the proposed fault current limiters can enhance the transient stability of the power system well compared to the other auxiliary devices. Moreover, the performance of the PRFCL is better than that of the BFCL. Further, the neural network predictive controller performs better than the fuzzy logic controller for BFCL. It is noteworthy that cyber-attacks have profound effect on the controller performance and the system becomes fully unstable even with the presence of the proposed controllers of the fault current limiters.
