Book Handbook of Slope Stabilisation

Download or read book Handbook of Slope Stabilisation written by J. A. R. Ortigao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is aimed at the practising engineer and engineering geologist working in tropical environments, where lands lides are mainly triggered by rain fall. This book is based on a similar work published in 1999 in Portuguese, which became the Rio de Janeiro Slope Manual. This book is an engineering guide for the design of slopes and stabilisation works in rocks and residual soils. It evolves from the cumulative experience gathered by several engineers and geologists who faced severe slope problems. The authors' experience throughout Central and South America (Costa Rica, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Venezuela) and the Far East, especially Hong Kong and Malaysia, was used as a foundation for writing this book. The work also benefits enormously from the time spent in Hong Kong in 1996 and 1997 by the first editor on sabbatical at the City University of Hong Kong, and the discussions he had with many colleagues from the Geotechnical Engineering Office (GEO) of the Hong Kong Government, especially Dr. A. Malone, Mr. w.K. Pun, Dr. A. Li, Mr. K. Ho, and Mr. y.c. Chan among others.

Download or read book Agriculture Price Stabilisation and Trade Rules written by Irene Musselli and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Agriculture, Price Stabilisation and Trade Rules, Irene Musselli offers a comprehensive doctrinal and historical analysis of stabilisation tools and approaches in agriculture. Using her extensive practical experience in the field, she takes up the interface of the tools discussed with trade rules and offers the first comprehensive analysis of WTO rules from the perspective of stabilisation policies. This volume offers a fresh look at the tool box of managed trade in agricultural commodities and develops new and refined solutions that take into account the legal role of equity and of graduation. Musselli offers new insights and is able to invigorate a debate caught in overly ideological entanglements between market oriented and interventionist schools.

Book Military Intervention Stabilisation and Peace

Download or read book Military Intervention Stabilisation and Peace written by Christian Dennys and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-30 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines international military interventions that have supported stability in four communities in Afghanistan and Nepal, in an attempt to analyse their success and improve this in future. This is the first in-depth village-level assessment of how local populations conceive of stability and stabilisation, and provides a theory and model for how stability can be created in communities during and after conflict. The data was collected during field research from 2010-12. In Afghanistan the conflicts examined include the invasion of the Soviet Union in 1979, the civil war from 1992 and the rise and fall of the Taliban. In Nepal the research examined the origins of the Maoist movement and the start of the People’s War in 1996 to its completion in 2006 and the subsequent Madeshi Andolan in 2007. The book argues that international, particularly Western, notions of stability and stabilisation processes have failed to grasp the importance of local political legitimacy formation, which is a vital aspect of contemporary statebuilding of a ‘non-Westphalian’ nature. The interventions, across defence, diplomatic and defence lines, have also at times undermined one another and in some cases contributed to instability. The work argues that the theories that structure interventions to address threats to international stability in ‘fragile’ states are insufficient to explain or achieve the goal of stability. This book will be of interest to students of stabilisation operations, statebuilding, peacebuilding, counterinsurgency, war and conflict studies and security studies in general. Christian Dennys is lecturer at Cranfield University/UK Defence Academy and has a PhD in International Relations.

Book Sustainable Slope Stabilisation using Recycled Plastic Pins

Download or read book Sustainable Slope Stabilisation using Recycled Plastic Pins written by Sahadat Hossain and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landslides and slope failure are common in the US and rest of the world. The landslides cause significant damage to infrastructure and millions of dollars are required each year to fix the slope. A sustainable and costeffective option to stabilise the slope can have significant benefits, as it will reduce the cost of maintenance and when using recycled pins, it may help the environment at the same time. The recycled plastic pin is made from recycled plastic bottles and other plastic waste. Several demonstration projects already proved the effectiveness of RPP as an alternative option to fix slope failure, with a maximum failure depth of 7-8 ft. In this book, every detail of the slope stabilisation technique using recycled plastic pins, including the design techniques and several case studies, are included. This will help to explain the basics of this important technique and will be used as reference to design the slope stabilisation scheme using recycled plastic pins.

Book Stabilisation Behaviour of Cyclically Loaded Shallow Foundations for Offshore Wind Turbines

Download or read book Stabilisation Behaviour of Cyclically Loaded Shallow Foundations for Offshore Wind Turbines written by Hendrik Sturm and published by KIT Scientific Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-16 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This work presents the results of model tests and numerical simulations of shallow foundations subjected to cyclic loads typical of offshore loadings. Small-scale model tests on a shallow foundation, subjected alternately to cyclic loads with large and small amplitudes, have shown that the accumulated rotations due to large amplitude loads reduce during later phases with smaller amplitudes. Numerical simulations have revealed that this behaviour of cyclically loaded shallow foundations is quantitatively influenced by the load amplitude and direction, and number of load cycles. This work concludes with a proposal for foundation geometries that efficiently resist offshore cyclic loads."--Page 4 of cover.

Book Modern Exchange rate Regimes Stabilisation Programmes and Co ordination of Macroeconomic Policies

Download or read book Modern Exchange rate Regimes Stabilisation Programmes and Co ordination of Macroeconomic Policies written by Maria Luiza Falcão Silva and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1999, this work analyzes the phenomenon of macroeconomic adjustment, with special emphasis on selected Latin American countries facing stabilization programmes. It provides a historical description of the origins, functioning and collapse of exchange-rate regimes from the international classical gold standard period to modern arrangements. The author supports the argument that systemic asymmetries in the worldwide adjustment mechanism are inherent in the international monetary system. The recent theoretical literature dealing with the rules vs discretion debate and its interaction with the credibility issue is reviewed. This topic is intrinsically related to the dispute over the appropriate role of exchange-rate anchors in disinflation programmes. Against a background of academic dispute between advocates of exchange-rate prescriptions and monetary conceptions, the contrasting views of different theorists regarding the choice of exchange rate regimes are presented and assessed. Finally, a comparative analysis of recent experiments in Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Mexico with exchange-rate based disinflation stabilization programmes is undertaken. The problems that have arisen while establishing new institutional arrangements, such as new currency or a policy rule for monetary base creation, are examined.

Book Degradation and Stabilisation of PVC

Download or read book Degradation and Stabilisation of PVC written by J. Owen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polyvinyl chloride has played a key role in the development of the plastics industry over the past 40 years and continues to be a polymer of major importance. The reasons for its enormous versatility and range of application derive from a combination of the basic structure which gives rise to a relatively tough and rigid material and its ability to accept a range of plasticisers and other additives which can modify its physical characteristics to produce a range of flexible products. Two major problems, however, have tested the skill and ingenuity of PVC technologists since earliest times. One is the thermal instability of the material at the temperatures required for melt processing and fabrication, and the second is the photochemical instability which until recently has limited the potentially large range of outdoor applications. Both problems have been handled in a commercially satisfactory way by the gradual development of a range of stabilisers, lubricants and other processing aids and the high quality material which has resulted has led to massive utilisation of PVC by industry. Totally adequate stabilisation requires a detailed understanding of the mechanisms by which degradation processes are initiated and propagated. Although great advances have been made in this respect in recent years the problem remains incompletely understood. This book presents an account of the present position and the problems which remain to be solved.

Book Stabilisation of the Foot and Ankle Complex

Download or read book Stabilisation of the Foot and Ankle Complex written by Gaspar Maximilian Gabriel Morey-Klapsing and published by diplom.de. This book was released on 2005-06-27 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: Probably one of the main contributions of this thesis has been the use of a three-dimensional kinematic model accounting not only for ankle motion but also for the motion of the lateral and medial columns of the forefoot with regard to the rearfoot (Arampatzis et al., 2002), in a joint stability context. The obtained values may serve as reference for the planning of further studies and provide a base for building up new hypotheses. However this thesis did not aim to merely describe the kinematics but rather to provide more knowledge regarding the stabilisation of the foot and the ankle. Therefore another important contribution is surely the simultaneous study of the kinematics, the EMG and the ground reaction forces, which allows a better understanding of the whole stabilisation process. The presented results have shown that forefoot motion is fundamental in foot and ankle stabilisation. The flexibility of the forefoot, especially in the frontal plane, permits a fast and appropriate adaptation to the ground. Furthermore the high mobility of the forefoot, allows the ankle to rotate slower and to a lesser extent. Possibly this reduction in required ankle motion can contribute considerably to injury prevention, since the forces acting at the ankle are high and a misalignment with regard to the ground reaction forces could rapidly lead to moments overwhelming the stabilising potential of the involved structures. In addition, the rapid adaptation of the forefoot to the ground can potentially provide more precise and earlier feedback regarding the ground characteristics than the structures surrounding the ankle joint. This way the corresponding adjustments in an immediate feedback could happen earlier, and the consequences of future interactions could be predicted more accurately. The results from the presented studies support the notion that joint stabilisation does not rely primarily on proprioception. Prolonged peroneal latencies might in fact be due to deafferentiation consequent to the recurrent sprains. However prolonged latencies do not seem to be responsible for a functional instability. On one hand the differences in latency times between healthy and unstable ankles are relatively low and not consistently observed. Those studies identifying prolonged latencies in functionally unstable joints, report differences close to 15 ms (Konradsen and Ravn, 1990; Löfvenberg et al., 1995). Fifteen ms is a short time to have a high [...]

Book Developments in Polymer Stabilisation 8

Download or read book Developments in Polymer Stabilisation 8 written by G. Scott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the present series of publications is two-fold. In the first place it is intended to review progress in the development of practical stabilising systems for a wide range of polymers and applications. A complementary and ultimately more important objec tive is to accommodate these practical developments within the framework of antioxidant theory, since there can be little question that further major advances in the practice of stabilisation technology will only be possible on the basis of a firm mechanistic foundation. Research into the role of 'stable' free radicals as antioxidants and stabilisers for polymers has intensified in recent years. Nitroxyl radicals (nitroxides) were the earliest long-lived radicals to be investi gated in detail and Maslov and Zaikov review the developments that have taken place in understanding their reaction mechanisms from the time when they were first investigated in liquid hydrocarbon systems to the present day when their outstanding performance as light stabilisers has been the object of much scientific research. Although some features of their reactivity remain obscure, the authors approach the problem kinetically and indicate the factors limiting their effectiveness.

Book The Law and Practice of Peacekeeping

Download or read book The Law and Practice of Peacekeeping written by Rosa Freedman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly complex world, it is more crucial than ever to have a full picture of how international peacekeeping can be a force for good, but can also have potentially negative impacts on host communities. After thirteen years of presence in Haiti, the highly controversial United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti has now withdrawn. The UN's legacy in Haiti is not all negative, but it does include sexual scandals, the divisive use of force to 'clean up' difficult neighbourhoods as well as a cholera epidemic, brought inadvertently by Nepalese peacekeepers that killed more than 8,000 Haitians and infected more than 600,000. This book presents a unique multi-disciplinary analysis of the legacy of the mission for Haiti. It presents an innovative account of contemporary international peacekeeping law and practice, arguing for a new model of accountability, going beyond the outdated immunity mechanisms to foreground human rights.
