Book Philosophy and the Passions

Download or read book Philosophy and the Passions written by Michel Meyer and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of the passions has always haunted Western philosophy and, more often than not, aroused harsh judgments. For the passions represent a force of excess and lawlessness in humanity that produces troubling, confusing paradoxes. In this book, noted European philosopher Michel Meyer offers a wide-ranging exegesis, the first of its kind, that systematically retraces the history of philosophic conceptions of the passions in the work of such thinkers as Plato, Aristotle, Augustine, Spinoza, Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, and Freud. The great ruptures that led to passion's condemnation as sin, and to its romantic exultation as the truth of existence, are meticulously registered and the logic governing them astutely explicated.Meyer thus provides new insight into an age-old dilemma: Does passion torture people because it blinds them, or, on the contrary, does it permit them to apprehend who and what we really are?

Book Passions in William Ockham s Philosophical Psychology

Download or read book Passions in William Ockham s Philosophical Psychology written by Vesa Hirvonen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-05-31 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is not only the first extensive analysis of passions or emotions in William Ockham's (c. 1285-1347) psychology, it also contains a detailed analysis of Ockham's little-known two-souls anthropology. The study shows how Ockham diverged from the traditional opinion of emotions in arguing that there were emotions in the will, not only in the lower part of the soul. Because of this new theory of the intellect and the will, Ockham believed that certain phenomena of the will were subjective reactions to occurrent phenomena and could therefore be treated as emotions. The book also discusses Ockham's approach to the traditional distinctions between amicable love and wanting love, and enjoyment and use, and to some other classical themes.

Book Philosophical Treatise on the Passions

Download or read book Philosophical Treatise on the Passions written by T. Cogan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophical Treatise on the Passions: From the Last London Edition Amidst the numerous Branches of Knowledge which claim the attention of the human mind, no one can be more important than that which constitutes the subject of the following Treatise. Whatever most intimately concerns ourselves must be of the first moment. The principle of self-love, which is inherent in our nature, immediately suggests that no other species of knowledge can stand in competition with it. Every thing is justly deemed interesting which has an immediate relation to ourselves; and the degrees of its importance are measured by the degrees of its influence upon our Well-being. Therefore, to attend to the workings of our own minds; to trace the power which external objects have over us; - to discover the nature of our emotions and affections; - to comprehend the reason of our being affected in a particular manner, must have a direct influence upon our pursuits, our characters, and our happiness.
