Book St Paul Street Provocations

Download or read book St Paul Street Provocations written by Patti Ross and published by . This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patti Ross lived in Baltimore, Maryland from 2010 to 2013, just one block south of North Avenue on St. Paul Street. She found herself in a neighborhood somewhat blighted, slighted by its own city. The chess moves of gentrification were becoming more evident and in a short time, Maryland Institute College of Art would move in to change the face of North Avenue between Howard and St. Paul Street forever. Those from the neighborhood saw their displacement coming. They preached about it to whoever would listen and often Patti did. St. Paul Street Provocations gives proclamations to her friends' stories and their lives in a city given the nickname of "Charm City." As an advocate for the poor and marginalized, she wanted to share the stories and illuminate the voices of those forced to live with daily pauperism. While walking her dog often through the neighborhood she met several homeless and drug abuse individuals many of whom others walked past or scoffed at regularly. Patti stopped to listen to their stories, some believable, some not, but she listened each time they wanted to share. And wrote it down.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting with Marx and Freud, scholars have attempted to identify the primary ethical challenge of capitalism. They have named injustice, inequality, repression, exploitative empires, and capitalism's psychic hold over all of us, among other ills. Nimi Wariboko instead argues that the core ethical problem of capitalism lies in the split nature of the modern economy, an economy divided against itself. Production is set against finance, consumption against saving, and the future against the present. As the rich enjoy their lifestyle, their fellow citizens live in servitude. The economy mimics the structure of our human subjectivity as Saint Paul theorizes in Romans 7: the law constitutes the subject as split, traversed by negativity. The economy is split, shot through with a fundamental antagonism. This fundamental negativity at the core of the economy disturbs its stability and identity, generating its destructive drive. The Split Economy develops a robust theoretical framework at the intersection of continental philosophy, psychoanalytic theory, theology, and political economy to reveal a fundamental dynamic at the heart of capitalism.

Martin Luther King, Jr.-America's best-known champion of civil liberties-was a Baptist minister. An in-depth examination of African-American history and religion, this comprehensive and lively book provides panoramic coverage of the black religious and social experience in America. Renowned historian Albert J. Raboteau traces the subtle blending of African tribal customs with the powerful Christian establishment, the migration to cities, the growth of Islam, and the 200-year fight for freedom and identity which was so often centered around African-American churches. From the African Methodist Episcopal Church to the Nation of Islam and from the first African slaves to Louis Farrakhan, this far-reaching book chronicles the evolution of an important and influential component of our religious and historical heritage. Book excerpt: Collected Stories by Richard Barham is a collection of mysterious and thrilling short stories. A Singular Passage in the Life of the Late Henry Harris is about a careful recollection of the life of Reverend Henry Harris and the strange happenings surrounding his death. Excerpt: "So that the extraordinary circumstance which I am about to relate, may meet with the credit it deserves, I think it necessary to premise, that my reverend friend, among whose papers I find it recorded, was, in his lifetime, ever esteemed as a man of good plain understanding, strict veracity, and unimpeached morals,--by no means of a nervous temperament, or one likely to attach undue weight to any occurrence out of the common course of events, merely because his reflections might not, at the moment, afford him a ready solution of its difficulties."

Book The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Illustrated by Arthur Rackham

Download or read book The Ingoldsby Legends or Mirth and Marvels Illustrated by Arthur Rackham written by Thomas Ingoldsby and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-12-09 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ingoldsby Legends are a true classic of Children’s literature. They were penned by Richard Harris Barham (1788-1845), better known by his nom de plume; Thomas Ingoldsby. Barham was an English cleric of the Church of England, as well as a fanatic reader and writer. The stories were inspired by real legends, old mythology and ghost stories – mostly deliberately humorous parodies and pastiches of medieval folklore and poetry. This collection also includes several poems by the author, including ‘The Poplar’, ‘Marie Mignot’ and ‘The Truants.’ This edition of The Ingoldsby Legends is accompanied throughout by a series of dazzling colour and black and white illustrations – by a master of the craft; Arthur Rackham (1867-1939). One of the most celebrated painters of the British Golden Age of Illustration (which encompassed the years from 1850 until the start of the First World War), Rackham’s artistry is quite simply, unparalleled. Throughout his career, he developed a unique style, combining haunting humour with dream-like romance. Presented alongside the text, his illustrations further refine and elucidate Barham’s captivating storytelling.
