Book The Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick 1783 1825

Download or read book The Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick 1783 1825 written by Ross N. Hebb and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the arrival, planting, and expansion of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick. The obstacles encountered in setting up missions in the frontier both before and after the arrival of Bishop Charles Inglis are documented. It is revealed that the origins, qualifications, zeal, and adaptability of the colony's missionaries were key factors in the Church's foundation and success. Legislated establishment, although British policy, proved half-hearted and of little benefit in colonial New Brunswick. While imperial attention to colonial religious policy was short-lived, the continued interest and aid of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (SPG) was crucial. inability to fully understand and appreciate the New Brunswick reality, the SPG remained the only secure source of clerical income. Given the frontier economy, SPG funds were critical to the Church, but it was in the end the exertions of Bishop Inglis and his small band of former New England missionaries who effected, the establishment and long-term viability of the Church of England in Loyalist New Brunswick.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Expeditions of Honour presents the entirety of Salusbury's diary, supplemented with a biographical introduction, historical notes on events and major figures, and the letters he sent to his wife. Selected in 1749 to serve on the first Halifax council and to supervise the granting and allocation of land, he eventually lost the confidence of Governor Edward Cornwallis and was gradually excluded from his inner circle. Salusbury turned to his journal, where he documented such matters as the colony's lack of funds, the encroachment of commercial influence from New England merchants, and the ways in which public officials inflated their reputations. A fascinating glimpse into the life on an early settler, Expeditions of Honour also offers an account of the conflict between imperial powers and some of the factors that lead to the Seven Years War.

Book excerpt: Using an impressive array of primary and secondary materials, Robin Winks details the diverse experiences of Black immigrants to Canada, including Black slaves brought to Nova Scotia and the Canadas by Loyalists at the end of the American Revolution, Black refugees who fled to Nova Scotia following the War of 1812, Jamaican Maroons, and fugitive slaves who fled to British North America. He also looks at Black West Coast businessmen who helped found British Columbia, particularly Victoria, and Black settlement in the prairie provinces. Throughout Winks explores efforts by African-Canadians to establish and maintain meaningful lifestyles in Canada. The Blacks in Canada investigates the French and English periods of slavery, the abolitionist movement in Canada, and the role played by Canadians in the broader continental antislavery crusade, as well as Canadian adaptations to nineteenth- and twentieth-century racial mores. The second edition includes a new introduction by Winks on changes that have occurred since the book's first appearance and where African-Canadian studies stands today.

Book Displacing Blackness

Download or read book Displacing Blackness written by Ted Rutland and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern urban planning has long promised to improve the quality of human life. But how is human life defined? Displacing Blackness develops a unique critique of urban planning by focusing, not on its subservience to economic or political elites, but on its efforts to improve people’s lives. While focused on twentieth-century Halifax, Displacing Blackness develops broad insights about the possibilities and limitations of modern planning. Drawing connections between the history of planning and emerging scholarship in Black Studies, Ted Rutland positions anti-blackness at the heart of contemporary city-making. Moving through a series of important planning initiatives, from a social housing project concerned with the moral and physical health of working-class residents to a sustainability-focused regional plan, Displacing Blackness shows how race – specifically blackness – has defined the boundaries of the human being and guided urban planning, with grave consequences for the city’s Black residents.

Download or read book Anglicans in Canada written by Alan L. Hayes and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the first worship services onboard English ships during the sixteenth century to the contentious toughmindedness of early clergymen to current debates about sexuality, Alan L. Hayes provides a comprehensive survey of the history of the Canadian Anglican Church. Unprecedented in the annals of Canadian religious history, it examines whether something like an Anglican identity emerged from within the changing forms of doctrine, worship, ministry, and institutions. With writing that conveys a strong sense of place and people, Hayes ultimately finds such an identity not in the relatively few agreements within Anglicanism but within the disagreements themselves. Including hard-to-find historical documents, Anglicans in Canada is ideal for research, classroom use, and as a resource for church groups.
