Book excerpt: From the award-winning and bestselling author of Feed comes a raucous and slyly funny adult fiction debut. Based on a bizarre but true quest to steal the mystical corpse of a long-dead saint, Nicked is a fantastical, genre-defying, and delightfully queer historical romp "Miracles, marvels, saints, sinners, love, plague, and treachery! M. T. Anderson has laid out a medieval feast of a novel, stuffed with everything I could have wished for. If I could canonize him for it, I would. But I’ll settle for shouting about how much I love this book."—Kelly Link, author of The Book of Love "M. T. Anderson is one of our greatest and most precious voices. His books aren't just brilliantly witty and vastly entertaining, they're fixed stars of wisdom and sanity in our increasingly unhinged universe. When lost, I use them to steer by."—Lev Grossman, author of The Magicians Trilogy The year is 1087, and a pox is sweeping through the Italian city of Bari. When a lowly monk is visited by Saint Nicholas in his dreams, he interprets the vision as a call to serve the sick. But his superiors, and the power brokers they serve, have different plans for the tender-hearted Brother Nicephorus. Enter Tyun, a charismatic treasure hunter renowned for “liberating” holy relics from their tombs. The seven-hundred-year-old bones of Saint Nicholas are rumored to weep a mysterious liquid that can heal the sick, Tyun says. For the humble price of a small fortune, he will steal the bones and deliver them to Bari, curing the plague and restoring glory to the fallen city. And Nicephorus, the “dreamer,” will be his guide. What follows is a heist for the ages, as Nicephorus is swept away on strange tides, and alongside even stranger bedfellows, to commit sacrilegious theft. Based on real historical accounts, Nicked is a swashbuckling saga, a medieval novel noir, a meditation on the miraculous, and a monastic meet-cute, filled with wide-eyed wonder at the world that awaits beyond our own borders.

Download or read book You re nicked written by Ben Lamb and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: You’re nicked is the first comprehensive study of television police series in the UK. It shows how British television’s most popular genre has developed stylistically, politically and philosophically from 1955 to the present. Each chapter focuses on a particular decade, investigating how the most-watched series represent the inner workings of the police station, the civilian life of criminals and the private lives of police officers. This new methodological approach unearths the complex ideology underpinning each series and discerns the key insights the genre can provide into the breakdown of the post-war settlement. A must-have for scholars and students of British history, television, sociology and criminology, the book will also be of interest to crime-drama enthusiasts worldwide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These nine stories, scenes from faraway youth, would have been misremembered, truncated, and come into the present morphed into something distinct from what they once were; yet they still bear the better telling. It is warranted, since all nine tales taken from Mercury do knit and meld themselves together to form a better whole to create a most pleasing portrait of the distant past.

Download or read book NICKED written by Brian Scovell and published by Grosvenor House Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This light-hearted book is not wholly about the perils of trying to park but it has a strong theme about cricket and football, and it is also a memoir as a veteran sports writer for the Daily Mail. I write about 350 or more personalities I've interviewed or known about. My hero was Denis Compton. I used to listen to a portable radio in hospital aged 11 about his dynamic batting after WW2. Another hero was the great all-round cricketer, Lord Learie Constantine, whom I wrote his articles in the Daily Sketch. He was the first Afro-Caribbean to be a Lord and as a barrister he broke the colour bar in the High Court when he won damages of five guineas, also gave advice for the Race Relations Acts. No-one has done more for diversity than this remarkable, lovable man - and today's generation haven't heard of him, sadly. We are campaigning for a statue of him in the Parliament Estate to add to the three black statues there compared to nearly 300 white statues in the borough of Westminster.
Download or read book Nicked written by Joanna Hill and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2024-03-01 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nicked unfurls a riveting tale of high-stakes art theft, where the worlds of crime and culture collide. A Parisian van, laden with precious fine art destined for a London sale, falls prey to a cunning heist. Amidst this chaos, Alistair, a casual holidaymaker, finds himself thrust into the heart of the intrigue. Urged to chase the thieves, his pursuit catapults him across the Channel, back to France. Set predominantly in the picturesque southwest of France, Nicked invites readers to explore the enchanting ambience of a 14th-century village perched atop a hill, a locale unwittingly entwined in the heist. By a twist of fate, this village, steeped in history and mystery, is where Alistair owns a summer retreat. As the narrative weaves through the cobbled streets and ancient architecture, suspense builds: will the art thieves’ paths cross with that of Alistair, the impromptu investigator? Nicked masterfully combines the allure of a rustic French village with the adrenaline of a crime thriller, keeping readers on the edge of their seats as they ponder whether the art and its pursuer will converge in this unexpected haven.
