Book Schools for the Lord s Service

Download or read book Schools for the Lord s Service written by Jerome Oetgen and published by Liturgical Press. This book was released on 2024-12-15 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An inspiring narrative history of the oldest congregation of Benedictine monasteries in the United States. Commissioned by the American-Cassinese Benedictine Congregation, Schools for the Lord’s Service is a comprehensive narrative history of the oldest congregation of Benedictine monasteries in the United States. In vivid detail, it describes how monasteries of the American-Cassinese Congregation initiated monastic life in North America according to the Rule of St. Benedict and how, in doing so, they have engaged for nearly 170 years with the American Catholic Church, the global Benedictine Order, the Holy See, and American society. Following a Benedictine tradition that stretches back to the early Middle Ages, American-Cassinese monks spread out from Pennsylvania to establish monasteries throughout the United States. Led by Boniface Wimmer, a visionary monk from the Bavarian abbey of Metten, the Benedictines introduced monastic observance according to the Rule of St. Benedict in these monasteries, and from them they founded missions, parishes, and schools where they continue to carry on pastoral, educational, and missionary apostolates in the service of the people of God. Comprised of twenty-five monasteries located in the United States, Puerto Rico, Canada, Brazil, Columbia, Mexico, and Taiwan, the legacy and spirit of the American-Cassinese Benedictines continues to reinforce and complement the words of Abbot Boniface Wimmer who constantly exhorted his Benedictine brothers and sisters, “Forward, always forward.”

Book excerpt: During the early years of the 20th century, American families witnessed amazing changes in their daily livesthe arrival of plumbing and electricity in their homes, the first automobiles, and thanks to the Eastman Kodak Company, the first affordable, portable, photographic instrument, the box camera. Many families purchased the box camera (for $1) and began to document their own histories. It is upon these histories that North Dakota places its focus. Nowhere were the changes so dramatic as on the Great Plains, and in the state of North Dakota especially. Due to the huge influx of immigrants, mostly from Scandinavia, the states population more than doubled from 1900 to 1940, roughly the period covered in North Dakota. But this was also a time of hardship and struggle, as the Great Depression, the Dustbowl, and war took their toll on North Dakota families. But through hard work and perseverence, most of these families survived, and thrived, and now share with us the story of that time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Tree Rooted in Faith traces the history of Queen of Angels Monastery from its beginnings in Maria-Rickenbach in Switzerland to the end of the twentieth century in Mt. Angel, Oregon. The foundress, Mother Bernardine Wachter, came to America as a missionary, first to Conception, Missouri, and then to the far west to establish a community of Benedictine Sisters. As she was joined by new recruits from Europe as well as American women, they built and staffed schools in Oregon and British Columbia. Based on community annals and individual memoirs, difficulties of their pioneer beginnings are related, along with adaptations of their prayer and community life to the new environment and to gradual developments in theology and spirituality. This story tells of the sistersÕ early work as teachers and of the gradual change in ministries as the needs of society and of the Catholic Church have evolved. The last quarter of the twentieth century saw drastic changes in American society and in the Catholic Church. Likewise, Queen of Angels Monastery has changed. Some basic ingredients of monastic life instilled by its founding mothers remain the same, while ministries and some aspects of lifestyle are different. Like their landmark giant Sequoia tree, Queen of Angels Monastery still stands firmly rooted in faith.
