Book The Prehistory of Texas

Download or read book The Prehistory of Texas written by Timothy K. Perttula and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2012-09-24 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paleoindians first arrived in Texas more than eleven thousand years ago, although relatively few sites of such early peoples have been discovered. Texas has a substantial post-Paleoindian record, however, and there are more than fifty thousand prehistoric archaeological sites identified across the state. This comprehensive volume explores in detail the varied experience of native peoples who lived on this land in prehistoric times. Chapters on each of the regions offer cutting-edge research, the culmination of years of work by dozens of the most knowledgeable experts. Based on the archaeological record, the discussion of the earliest inhabitants includes a reclassification of all known Paleoindian projectile point types and establishes a chronology for the various occupations. The archaeological data from across the state of Texas also allow authors to trace technological changes over time, the development of intensive fishing and shellfish collecting, funerary customs and the belief systems they represented, long-term changes in settlement mobility and character, landscape use, and the eventual development of agricultural societies. The studies bring the prehistory of Texas Indians all the way up through the Late Prehistoric period (ca. a.d. 700–1600). The extensively illustrated chapters are broadly cultural-historical in nature but stay strongly focused on important current research problems. Taken together, they present careful and exhaustive considerations of the full archaeological (and paleoenvironmental) record of Texas.

Book Compassionate Capitalism

Download or read book Compassionate Capitalism written by Casson, Catherine and published by Policy Press. This book was released on 2020-04-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It may seem like a recent trend, but the businesses have been practising “Compassionate Capitalism” for nearly a thousand years. Based on the recently discovered historical documents on Cambridge’s sophisticated urban property market during the Commercial Revolution in the thirteenth century, this book explores how successful entrepreneurs employed the wealth they had accumulated to the benefit of the community. Cutting across disciplines, from economic and business history to entrepreneurship, philanthropy and medieval studies, this outstanding study presents an invaluable contribution to our knowledge of the early phases of capitalism. The Cambridge Hundred Rolls Sources Volume, a companion replacing the previous incomplete and inaccurate transcription by the Record Commission of 1818, is also now available from Bristol University Press.

Book Regenerating Cultural Religious Heritage

Download or read book Regenerating Cultural Religious Heritage written by Olimpia Niglio and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-03 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces important reflections on understanding the meaning of cultural-religious heritage in an international context and their relationship with issues of sustainability at the local community level. Through a holistic approach, the book charts new courses in analyzing different cultural policies and methods for preserving and enhancing cultural heritage. Stemming from an intercultural seminar promoted by the International Scientific Committee Places of Religion and Ritual (ICOMOS PRERICO) under the theme of “Reuse and regenerations of cultural-religious heritage in the world: Comparison among cultures,” the book examines the scientific diplomacy and cultural strategies promoted by countries in dialogue with the UN 2030 Agenda, as well as Agenda 21 for Culture. The book seeks to reinforce the value of local cultural policies for supporting and enhancing cultural-religious heritage through specific programs and collaborations in dialogue with government policies. This collection is relevant to scholars working in areas relating to cultural heritage, religious heritage, architectural restoration, protection of the local inheritances, law, and management of the cultural sites.

Book St Mary s Clusters an Historical Enquiry Concerning the Pinnacled Steeple of the University Church Oxford

Download or read book St Mary s Clusters an Historical Enquiry Concerning the Pinnacled Steeple of the University Church Oxford written by Thomas Case and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1893 edition. Excerpt: ...works both of art and colour: then they were carefully restored and the whole re-coloured by 1862: now the new colour has all peeled off, leaving a complete series of sculptures; but who can tell what is old and what is new? It is the same at St. Mary's. Of the general renovation of the steeple, it may be said that this and that bit are each in the Decorated style. The new north window in the lower story of the tower has even become liable to be first mistaken for an original design, and then abused as an argument to prove the lower story considerably earlier than the rest of the steeple. The statues again, " carefully repaired, or replaced with exact copies of their originals, executed by Mr. Dunbar, Sculptor, Edinburgh," have become a hard problem. Thus was the original design obscured; and with it the history of the structure obliterated. Was there a late clock against the parapet? It must be removed. Was there an independent pinnacle on each spire-buttress, Debased in character and construction? It must be decked up in Decorated dress. The consequence is that the original design is better studied in Loggan's Engraving than in the present structure of the steeple. There at all events we can say distinctly--this is 14th, that is 17th century. In the present structure we see a confusion of 14th, 17th, and 19th centuries. This renovation of part by part in the Decorated style is not restoration. Restoration is rebuilding the original design. Was then the renovation of 1848-52 a rebuilding of the original design of St. Mary's steeple? The answer is, No, because it contained too many unproved hypotheses and improbabilities. The renovation of 1848-52 made the unproved hypothesis that the double panels of each face of the...
