Book Notable St Louisans in 1900

Download or read book Notable St Louisans in 1900 written by James Cox and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notable St. Louisans in 1900: A Portrait Gallery of Men Whose Energy and Ability Have Contributed Largely Towards Making St. Louis the Commercial and Financial Metropolis of the West, Southwest and South Below each name will be found a brief title or description. For purposes of uniformity these titles are limited to two lines, and an effort has been made to select such descriptions as are most up-to-date and distinctive. To have enumerated every past and present office of some of those whose pictures are given would have required nearly a page of space, and would have changed the work from a portrait gallery to a collection of biographies. An alphabetical index of portraits is appended. In the body of the work the classification is as accurate and complete as it was possible to make it, but in a city of aggressiveness and public spirit, in which the leading men rally round every movement for the common good, and where exclusiveness is the exception rather than the rule, no plan of classification by trades or professions can be invariably followed. Download or read book Hidden History of Downtown St Louis written by Maureen O'Connor Kavanaugh and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A reputation as the town of shoes, booze and blues persists in St. Louis. But a fascinating history waits just beneath the surface in the heart of the city, like the labyrinth of natural limestone caves where Anheuser-Busch got its start. One of the city's Garment District shoe factories was the workplace of a young Tennessee Williams, referenced in his first Broadway play, The Glass Menagerie. Downtown's vibrant African American community was the source and subject of such folk-blues classics as "Frankie and Johnny" and "Stagger Lee," not to mention W.C. Handy's classic "St. Louis Blues." Navigate this hidden heritage of downtown St. Louis with author Maureen Kavanaugh.

An age when changes come rapidly and are of intense moment. We are living in a wonderful country, a country where traditions are being made and customs established. A country of opportunity. Where the man who can do things has a chance to do them and can hope for a seat among the mighty. And St. Louis is alive to all the activity and progress which permeates our country and is doing her splendid share in the work. St. Louis is the vital. Throbbing heart of a wonderful section. With its beat vast districts are strengthened and on it thousands upon thousands are dependent. There are places where greater concentration of activity exists.
