Book excerpt: Excerpt from the Preface: "There happened in the year 1687, an odd accident at Venice, that made a very great stir then, and which I think deserves to be rescued from oblivion. The great freedom and ease with which all persons, who make a good appearance, live in that city, is known sufficiently to all who are acquainted with it; such will not therefore be surprised, that a stranger, who went by the name of signor Gualdi, and who made a considerable figure there, was admitted into the best company, though nobody knew who or what he was. He remained at Venice for some months; and three things were remarked in his conduct. The first was, that he had a small collection of fine pictures, which he readily showed to any body that desired it; the next, that he was perfectly versed in all arts and sciences, and spoke on every subject with such readiness and sagacity, as astonished all who heard him; and it was, in the third place, observed, that he never wrote or received any letter, never desired any credit, or made use of bills of exchange, but paid for every thing in ready money and lived decently, though not in splendour."

Book St Leon A Tale of the Sixteenth Century

Download or read book St Leon A Tale of the Sixteenth Century written by William Godwin and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-05-19 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: St. Leon is the story of a French aristocrat, Count Reginald de St. Leon, who loses his fortune gambling and experiences guilt that almost drives him crazy. Count Reginald narrates his life story, starting with his father's death when he was an infant. He was brought up by his mother, a woman full of the prejudices of aristocracy and magnificence. Reginald had great regard for aristocratic honor. After being inspired by his uncle, the Marquis de Villeroy, he joined the Italian war of 1521–1526, hoping to gain military fame in the battle of Pavia. When he returned home from service, he found out that his mother was dead, and the twenty-year-old was forced to take control of his own affairs. The novel explores the themes of immortality, love and friendship, integrity, and religion. Godwin combines elements of domestic, philosophical, and fantasy novels into a historical fiction of extensive range. There are exciting gothic elements in the story.

This Broadview edition includes a critical introduction and full annotation.
