Book St Lawrence River Water levels Study Application of the ONE D Hydrodynamic Model

Download or read book St Lawrence River Water levels Study Application of the ONE D Hydrodynamic Model written by Brian Morse and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 14 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ONE-D is a mathematical model developed originally at MIT by Gunaratnam and Perkins for the modelling of open channel flow systems. Since its original creation, the Systems group at Water Planning and Management branch of Environment Canada has modified, improved and maintained the model. Since the model is able to simulate complex river networks under unsteady flow condition, it was an ideal candidate for the simulation of the St. Lawrence system. This report documents the calibration and validation, based on 1988 data, of ONE-D for the St. Lawrence system from Moses-Saunders dams at Cornwall, the Carillon dam on the Ottawa river down through the rapids at the outlet of Lac Saint Louis all the way to Quebec City (near Lauzon).

Book Environmental Hydraulics Volume 2

Download or read book Environmental Hydraulics Volume 2 written by Georgos C. Christodoulou and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-03-07 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last two decades environmental hydraulics as an academic discipline has expanded considerably, caused by growing concerns over water environmental issues associated with pollution and water balance problems on regional and global scale. These issues require a thorough understanding of processes related to environmental flows and transport phenomena, and the development of new approaches for practical solutions. Environmental Hydraulics includes about 200 contributions from 35 countries presented at the 6th International Symposium on Environmental Hydraulics (Athens, Greece, 23-25 June 2010). They cover the state-of-the-art on a broad range of topics, including: fundamentals aspects of environmental fluid mechanics, environmental hydraulics problems of inland, coastal and ground waters, interfacial processes; computational, experimental and field measurement techniques, ecological aspects, and effects of global climate change. Environmental Hydraulics will be of interest to researchers, civil/environmental engineers, and professional engineers dealing with the design and operation of environmental hydraulic works such as wastewater treatment and disposal, river and marine constructions, and to academics and graduate students in related fields.

Book Review of the Lake Ontario St Lawrence River Studies

Download or read book Review of the Lake Ontario St Lawrence River Studies written by The Royal Society of Canada and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-06-11 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the 1950s,the International Joint Commission (IJC) of Canada and the United States has issued water regulation and management plans for Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. Changes in recreational, environmental, navigational and other uses of the water system have prompted the IJC to consider replacing the current water regulation plan in operation for more than 40 years. IJC's goals for a replacement plan include sound scientific foundations, public participation, transparency in plan development and evaluation, and inclusion of environmental considerations. To help develop and select the new plan, the IJC supported a 5-year, $20 million Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study (LOSLR Study). The LOSLR Study uses models to compile and integrate data gathered from a series of commissioned studies of wetlands, species at risk, recreational boating, fisheries, coastal erosion and flooding, commercial navigation, hydropower, industrial, municipal and domestic water intakes, public information and education, and hydrologic modeling. This report reviews a portion of the study that focused on wetlands and species at risk and three of the models that were used. The report finds that the overall breadth of the LOSLR study is impressive, and commends the scale and inclusiveness of the studies and models. In terms of informing decision making, however, the reviewed studies and models show deficiencies when evaluated against ten evaluation criteria, including treatment of uncertainty, quality control/quality assurance, thorough documentation, and empirical foundations. Among the report's recommendations is a need for more thorough documentation of study methods and findings, stronger and more consistent quality control, and more attention to how uncertainty should be addressed to better inform decision making. This NRC study was conducted in collaboration with the Royal Society of Canada.

Book Review of the St Johns River Water Supply Impact Study

Download or read book Review of the St Johns River Water Supply Impact Study written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-10-08 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The St. Johns River is the longest river in Florida, containing extensive freshwater wetlands, numerous large lakes, a wide estuarine channel, and a correspondingly diverse array of native flora and fauna. Water resource management in the river's watershed is the responsibility of the St. Johns River Water Management District (the District). The District must provide water for the region's 4.4 million residents as well as numerous industrial and agricultural users, all while protecting natural systems within the river basin. With population growth in the watershed expected to surpass 7.2 million in 2030, the District, through its water resources planning process, has begun to identify alternative sources of water beyond its traditional groundwater sources, including the potential withdrawal of 262 million gallons per day from the St. Johns River. To more comprehensively evaluate the environmental impacts of withdrawing this water from the river, the District embarked on a two-year Water Supply Impact Study (WSIS), and requested the involvement of the National Research Council. The present volume reviews the Phase I work of the WSIS and provides recommendations for improving Phase II.

Book Water Availability Issues for the St Lawrence River

Download or read book Water Availability Issues for the St Lawrence River written by Canada. Environment Canada and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fluctuating flow and water levels in the St. Lawrence River, whether natural or human-induced, are of concern to the various stakeholders (government organizations, research scientists, industries and the general public) that have been involved for several years in managing water resources and their use, and in maintaining the physical chemical and biological integrity of the ecosystem. Such concerns are particularly justified in the current context of climate change, which is likely to significantly influence socio-economic and environmental policy decisions. In recent years, Environment Canada research scientists have been studying the problem of fluctuating flows and water levels in the fluvial portion of the St. Lawrence. Much of their research has been carried out in the context of the work of the International Joint Commission and, more specifically, the International Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River Study Board, which has a mandate to evaluate the procedures and criteria used to regulate outflows from Lake Ontario and manage water levels in Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River. This document is the product of the work of several of the above-mentioned Environment Canada research scientists. It is a synthesis of the current state of knowledge and of certain recommendations relating to the possible impacts of fluctuating flows and water levels on various environmental and socio-economic factors.

Book Dissolved Oxygen Modelling of the St Croix River

Download or read book Dissolved Oxygen Modelling of the St Croix River written by Willard Boutot and published by Environment Canada. This book was released on 1985 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comparative study was carried out to determine theapplicability to water quality modelling of the numerical One-Dimensional Hydrodynamic model as opposed to the HEC-2 andWATQUAL models combined. Results of the simulations with theone-dimensional model showed this model to be as good as the HEC-2 and better than the WATQUAL. Comparing the versatility of thealternatives, the authors found that the One-DimensionalHydrodynamic model performs to great advantage.
