Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Catalogue of the Manuscripts and Scarce Books in the Library of St. John's College, Cambridge However, if there had been a Catalogue in existence, it would not have been a useless task to have reconsidered and carefully reconstructed it from personal inspection Those who have consulted the works above-named, will readily agree with me, that nothing can be more meagre than the ac counts they give; and it is often quite impossible to make any use of the information, such as it is, from the careless manner in which the materials have been heaped together. That I may not be supposed to erect myself into a censor without sufficient ground, I will give an extract from a foreign review of some note, which expresses more censure on the ponderous volumes of the Catal. Mss. Aug. And Hib., than I should venture to do. The passage occurs in a review of one of Hearne's publications, and it goes on to speak of the then expected second edition of the Bodleian Catalogue of printed Books. Download or read book St John s College Classic Reprint written by James Bass Mullinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from St. John's College The History of the College of St. John the Evangelist, Cambridge, written in the first half of the eighteenth century by Thomas Baker, remained in manuscript until the year 1869, when it was edited by professor Mayor for the University Press. The editor supplemented Baker's labours by the addition of numerous and elaborate illustrative notes and also by a large amount of material relating to the history of the college sub sequent to the date with which Baker's narrative con eludes, taken partly from the Continuation by William Cole and partly from his own extensive biographical collections. The entire work, extending to closely printed large octavo pages, well deserves, on account of the illustrations it affords of learning and letters in England throughout the period, a place in every historical library. Of the unprinted sources in the college archives, to which Baker and his editor alike had access, the latter also supplies a full account. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Founders and Benefactors of St. John's College, Cambridge: With Notes, Chiefly Biographical These Notes on the Benefactors of the College were begun when the writer was Dean with the view of giving greater reality to the annual Commemoration Service. In former days a brief description of each gift was appended to the name, titles, and designation of the giver. When the_ catalogue grew in length it was divided into parts and Commemoration Services held more frequently, one part of the catalogue only being read at each service. Since 1860 there has been but one annual service of the kind, on May 6, and, as it was necessary to read the whole List of Benefactors, all the explanatory matter was omitted and a mere roll of names recited. Book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
