Download or read book Portraits of Historic St Croix Before and After Hurricane Hugo written by Dorene E. Carter and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a phoenix from the ashes of natural disaster. It is an historically significant song of survival that poignantly juxtaposes the fallout of the century's most vicious tropical storm & the architectural chronology of the Caribbean island of St. Croix. St. Croix, the largest of the U. S. Virgin Islands, sustained massive damages when the eye of Hurricane Hugo passed directly over it on September 17-18, 1989. In "Portraits of Historic St. Croix," author Dorene E. Carter, Ph.D., creates an evocative pre-Hugo, post-Hugo tapestry. Here, a classic 19th-century West Indian cottage appears on the opposite page as a pile of splinters & twisted metal. There, a congregation poses sedately in front of the Frederiksted Wesleyan Holiness Church which, on the facing leaf, is reduced to a heap of rubble. Historians & historical preservationists will delight in the narrative detail, from quaint descriptions of arcaded building & pitched "hip" roofs to the anectodal captions. And anyone who has ever been curious about the aftermath of a hurricane will be spellbound by the graphic plates of Hugo's decimation & stark before & after contrast of both the structures & the environment. Carter, who was born & raised on St. Croix, where she publishes a quarterly magazine called Caribbean Digest, took most of the 97 intriguing color photographs herself. She is also the editor & publisher. The resulting duality is the book's singular charm: It is at once a loving pictorial memento for those who understand the implications of natural disaster & an intimate testimonial to the timeless Caribbean resilience of St. Croix.

Download or read book Our Danish Connection written by Nina York and published by . This book was released on 2020-10-05 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Danish Connection is a collection of 72 short essays that originally appeared in ST. CROIX THIS WEEK magazine (permission obtained) under that heading from 2009 through 2019. It documents the surprisingly extensive legacy of cultural, architectural, and genealogical resources from 1733 as a colony of Denmark until its sale with the islands of St. Thomas and St. John in 1917 to the United States. The tragic use of enslavement of Africans brought here to work in sugar cane fields temporarily enriched the European owners but emancipation took place in 1848. The Danish imprint on the culture has led to a surprising friendship between the islanders and Denmark with many conciliatory initiatives and large tourism and scholarly interests from Danes, creating a mood of mutual acceptance and support unusual between a former colony and its owners. The book contains a translation into Danish of all the essays by the author Nina York , a native of Denmark and resident of St. Croix since 1976. The book is supported by the St. Croix Friends of Denmark Society and the Danish West Indian Society of Denmark. We all share a love for this island as a special place to live.

Download or read book Environment and Labor in the Caribbean written by Joseph Lisowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-10-20 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean Perspectives series began as a response to the need for scholarly investigations into social, scientific, and economic conditions affecting the least understood, or written about, part of the Americas. In this second volume the authors have included explorations of aspects of management and climate; as well as social, literary, and educational concerns in the eastern Caribbean, along with an extended study of the labor situation in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The opening chapter on resource management training in the Caribbean underscores the need for cooperation among eastern Caribbean universities and provides a practical model for implementation. This is followed by a significant study of rainfall patterns that could influence economic and cultural planning in the Virgin Islands. School environment is assessed in the next chapter, and educators will see how the quality of social support and interactions function in organizational contexts, especially as they relate to teacher morale. How fact becomes fiction is chronicled in a chapter dealing with Samuel Selvon's autobiographical novel, A Brighter Sun. The media clearly had a se-rious problem separating fact from fiction in their reporting of the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in St. Croix. The next chapter investigates the causes of looting following that storm and lays to rest some widespread misconceptions. The final chapters focus on the labor movements in the Virgin Islands, both from historical and sociological points of view. These chapters not only help explain certain tendencies in the Caribbean work force but also outline social implications for the future. Some of these findings are bound to be controversial, such as the author's contention that the legacy of slavery is still being felt. This volume of Caribbean Perspectives offers both factual accounts and challenging insights into the diversity of Caribbean life and culture. The ideas and data found here will reverberate and suggest a host of analogous circumstances elsewhere. This volume, and the series as such, will interest students of the Caribbean, Latin America, and social development in the Third World.
Download or read book Coral Reefs at the Crossroads written by Dennis K. Hubbard and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, contributors from diverse backgrounds take a first step toward an integrated view of reefs and the significance of their recent decline. More than any other earth system, coral reefs sit at a disciplinary crossroads. Most recently, they have reached another crossroads - fundamental changes in their bio-physical structure greater than those of previous centuries or even millennia. Effective strategies to mitigate recent trends will require an approach that embraces the myriad perspectives from across the scientific landscape, but will also need a mechanism to transform scientific understanding into social will and political implementation.

Download or read book A Birder s West Indies written by Roland H. Wauer and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-22 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Indies offer so much more than sun, sand, and shopping. This sweeping arc of islands, which runs from Cuba to Grenada and includes the Virgin Islands, teems with a rich diversity of plant and animal life. Up to 40 percent of the plants in some forests are found nowhere else on earth, while the West Indian flyway is a critical link in the migratory routes of many birds. In A Birder's West Indies, Roland Wauer takes you on an island-by-island journey of discovery. He describes the unique natural features of each island and recounts his often fascinating experiences in seeking out the nearly 400 species of birds known in the West Indies. His accounts give insight into the birds' habitats, status, and ecology and record some of the threats posed by human activities. For readers planning trips to the West Indies, Wauer also includes helpful, up-to-date facts about the best times to travel, the kinds of entry and customs systems to expect, the money exchange services available, and general information about weather, food, and accommodations. Filling a unique niche among current guides, A Birder's West Indies offers both professional ornithologists and avocational bird watchers a chance to compare notes and experiences with an expert observer. And for readers who haven't yet visited the islands, Wauer's fluid prose and lovely color photographs will be the next-best thing to being there—and an irresistible invitation to go.
