The interior of the Church is remarkable as giving a sense of enormous space. On the preceding page is a table of dimensions of English Churches (taken, with some slight modifications, from the Book of Building by the late Lord Grimthorpe), in order of floor area, down to Boston Church, with the areas of four smaller churches near at hand. Down to Boston, they are with the exception of S. Michael's, Coventry, all transeptal, and only Coventry, Yarmouth, and Boston are merely parochial churches, intended to accommodate a single large congregation. Boston certainly need not fear comparison with Yarmouth, which is practically three churches standing side by side, and which always looks low and dark; if its----floor area is larger, its cubical contents must be smaller than that of Boston. S. Michael's, Coventry, has two aisles on each side of the nave, and does not, at least to the present writer, give the same sense of space that Boston does. A remarkable point about Boston Church is that in plan it is simply an ordinary parish church. Its great size is produced not by the number, but by the magnitude of the different parts which make up the whole. If all the linear dimensions were reduced one-half, and the floor area consequently reduced to one-quarter of its present size, the building would want comparatively little alteration before appearing an ordinary parish church. The possibility of a reduction of this sort, though it would be nothing unusual in a classic building, is almost unique in one in a Gothic style, The width of the aisles at Boston is exceptional, and the twelve pillars are slender and far apart.
