He hops in his RV to visit - and sketch - the buildings and places across America that he and his wife never got to see. When his daughter learns of a young boy forced to give up a beloved Saint Bernard named Lewis, she suggests George adopt the animal as a traveling companion. The dog even fits perfectly in the sidecar of George's Vespa motor scooter. As George warms to his travel mate, he begins talking to Lewis, sharing stories from his life and his unrealized dreams. Along the way, Lewis seems to attract people and make instant friends with the quirky and charming, funny and odd people who cross their path. Could it be that his new friends - and this strange dog - will help George to finally confront the secret he's been hiding? Can Lewis's devotion to the truth be enough to save George from himself?

Book Sermons of Saint Bernard on Advent Christmas Including the Famous Treatise on the Incarnation Called Missus Est

Download or read book Sermons of Saint Bernard on Advent Christmas Including the Famous Treatise on the Incarnation Called Missus Est written by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux and published by Aeterna Press. This book was released on with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a pleasure to write a few words of introduction to an admirable translation of some interesting “Sermons of St. Bernard” made by one of the Community of St. Mary’s, York. The sermons are nineteen in number, and are all of them related to the mysteries of Advent and Christmas. Of the seven sermons, De Adventu Domini, printed in Dom Mabillon’s edition of the saint’s works, we have here the first two. Then follow the four homilies on the text Missus est, etc. This is the title that is generally given to these famous sermons, but the holy preacher himself intended them to be called De laudibus Virginis Matris, as we read in his letter to Peter the Deacon. Of the six discourses for the Vigil of Christmas, the translator has selected the first, the fourth, and the sixth. All the five sermons on Christmas Day are given. The volume ends with two on the Circumcision and three on the Epiphany. Aeterna Press

Book 1868 St Bernard Parish Massacre The Blood in the Cane Fields

Download or read book 1868 St Bernard Parish Massacre The Blood in the Cane Fields written by C. Dier and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Days before the tumultuous presidential election of 1868, St. Bernard Parish descended into chaos. As African American men gained the right to vote, white Democrats of the parish feared losing their majority. Armed groups mobilized to suppress these recently emancipated voters in the hopes of regaining a way of life turned upside down by the Civil War and Reconstruction. Freedpeople were dragged from their homes and murdered in cold blood. Many fled to the cane fields to hide from their attackers. The reported number of those killed varies from 35 to 135. The tragedy was hidden, but implications reverberated throughout the South and lingered for generations. Author and historian Chris Dier reveals the horrifying true story behind the St. Bernard Parish Massacre.

Book My Dog Is the Best Person I Know

Download or read book My Dog Is the Best Person I Know written by Carey Heller and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My Dog Is the Best Person I Know is an outrageously funny and heartwarming look into childrens relationships with their four-legged canine family members. In the way that only brighteyed, perceptive youngsters can do, children from four to thirteen describe in hilarious fashion what a dogs personality is like and how the four-legged set fits into the fabric of family life, while occasionally tearing apart the fabric of the family sofa! In this wonderful collection, the children address such appealing topics as the history of how dogs got to be domesticated, what makes dogs so lovable, a candid comparison of dogs versus cats, what benefits dogs and people derive from living together, what dogs would say about the people in their lives, the personal comments veterinarians offer to dogs when patient and doctor are alone, how to show love to your dog, and why indeed a dog can aptly be called mans best friend. Here are a few choice examples: Dogs used to travel in packs, until one day they saw a persons home and thought it was a bed-and-breakfast for dogs! (Dan, age 11) Nowadays, all dogs want better foodlike filet mignon! (Jared, age 13) Who else but a dog would be sloppy enough to want to be close to a man? (Emily, age 11) Dogs are mans best friend because dogs are color-blind and so they love all the people exactly the same. (Alyssa, age 11)

Book Black Is the Body

Download or read book Black Is the Body written by Emily Bernard and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2019-01-29 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Blackness is an art, not a science. It is a paradox: intangible and visceral; a situation and a story. It is the thread that connects these essays, but its significance as an experience emerges randomly, unpredictably. . . . Race is the story of my life, and therefore black is the body of this book.” In these twelve deeply personal, connected essays, Bernard details the experience of growing up black in the south with a family name inherited from a white man, surviving a random stabbing at a New Haven coffee shop, marrying a white man from the North and bringing him home to her family, adopting two children from Ethiopia, and living and teaching in a primarily white New England college town. Each of these essays sets out to discover a new way of talking about race and of telling the truth as the author has lived it. "Black Is the Body is one of the most beautiful, elegant memoirs I've ever read. It's about race, it's about womanhood, it's about friendship, it's about a life of the mind, and also a life of the body. But more than anything, it's about love. I can't praise Emily Bernard enough for what she has created in these pages." --Elizabeth Gilbert WINNER OF THE CHRISTOPHER ISHERWOOD PRIZE FOR AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL PROSE NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR AND KIRKUS REVIEWS ONE OF MAUREEN CORRIGAN'S 10 UNPUTDOWNABLE READS OF THE YEAR
