Book Homilies on the Gospel of John 41 124

Download or read book Homilies on the Gospel of John 41 124 written by Saint Augustine of Hippo and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2021-03-25 with total page 549 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine's homilies on the Gospel of John are masterpieces not only of theological profundity but also of pastoral engagement. This volume also includes the index for Homilies on the Gospel of John (1-40). Few ancient Christian authors attempted anything like a complete commentary on the Gospel of John, among them Origen, John Chrysostom and Augustine. Of these, Augustine's must count as the greatest. Unlike Origen's, it has come down to us in its entirety, and of the others that remain it is certainly the most theologically profound. John's gospel allows Augustine to range broadly over themes that were his life’s work —the Trinity, the person of Christ, the nature of the Church and its sacraments, the fulfillment of the divine plan. The 124 homilies that constitute Augustine's commentary, however, are masterpieces not only of theological profundity but also of pastoral engagement. In the question-and-answer style that he frequently employs, for example, one can sense Augustine's real awareness of his congregation's struggles with the gospel text. And the congregation's response to Augustine, which he frequently alludes to, is an indication of the success of his dialogical preaching style. The Johannine literature drew out the best in Augustine. The Homilies on the Gospel of John are the indispensable complement to The Homilies on The First Epistle of John, published in this series, and they should be a part of any serious theological library.

Book Performing Orthodox Ritual in Byzantium

Download or read book Performing Orthodox Ritual in Byzantium written by Andrew Walker White and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-08 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this groundbreaking, interdisciplinary study, Andrew Walker White explores the origins of Byzantine ritual - the rites of the early Greek Orthodox Church - and its unique relationship with traditional theatre. Tracing the secularization of pagan theatre, the rise of rhetoric as an alternative to acting, as well as the transmission of ancient methods of musical composition into the Byzantine era, White demonstrates how Christian ritual was in effect a post-theatrical performing art, created by intellectuals who were fully aware of traditional theatre but who endeavoured to avoid it. The book explores how Orthodox rites avoid the aesthetic appreciation associated with secular art, and conducts an in-depth study (and reconstruction) of the late Byzantine Service of the Furnace. Often treated as a liturgical drama, White translates and delineates the features of five extant versions, to show how and why it generated widely diverse audience reactions in both medieval times and our own.

Book Inspiration and Utmost Art The Poetics of Early Modern English Psalm Translations

Download or read book Inspiration and Utmost Art The Poetics of Early Modern English Psalm Translations written by Janina Niefer and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2018-03-13 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is concerned with Early Modern English psalm translations. It focusses on the connection between inspiration and formal perfection as it appears in George Wither's "A Preparation to the Psalter", Philip Sidney's "The Defence of Poesy", "The Sidney Psalter" and "The Bay Psalm Book". Taking into account theological, philosophical, and literary contexts of the time, it reveals the struggle to find a suitable language in praise of God as a main concern of Early Modern religious writers, and presents concepts which are highly relevant for the religious poetry of the time.
