Book Advances in Intelligent Information and Database Systems

Download or read book Advances in Intelligent Information and Database Systems written by Ngoc Thanh Nguyen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-04-09 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intelligent information and database systems are two closely related and we- established subfields of modern computer science. They focus on the integration of artificial intelligence and classic database technologies in order to create the class of next generation information systems. The major target of this new gene- tion of systems is to provide end-users with intelligent behavior: simple and/or advanced learning, problem solving, uncertain and certain reasoning, se- organization, cooperation, etc. Such intelligent abilities are implemented in classic information systems to make them autonomous and user oriented, in particular when advanced problems of multimedia information and knowledge discovery, access, retrieval and manipulation are to be solved in the context of large, distr- uted and heterogeneous environments. It means that intelligent knowledge-based information and database systems are used to solve basic problems of large coll- tions management, carry out knowledge discovery from large data collections, reason about information under uncertain conditions, support users in their for- lation of complex queries etc. Topics discussed in this volume include but are not limited to the foundations and principles of data, information, and knowledge models, methodologies for intelligent information and database systems analysis, design, implementation, validation, maintenance and evolution.

It collects the most important and representative research c- ried out in the project CHOROCHRONOS and presents it in a uni?ed fashion. CHOROCHRONOS was a Training and Mobility Research Network funded by the European Commission with the objective to study the design, implemen- tion, and application of spatiotemporal database management systems. This book would never have been possible if it was not for the devoted work of many people. First and foremost, we would like to thank the authors of the nine chapters of this book for their hard work. We would also like to acknowledge the help of Christiane Bernard, our o?cer from the European Commission, who saw the project to its conclusion, working as hard as we did to make it a thorough success. The constructive comments and feedback of our reviewer Colette Roland (University of Paris-1) are also very much appreciated. Last, but not least, we would like to thank all the students and postdoctoral fellows who were trained during CHOROCHRONOS. We hope the time they spent at CHOROCHRONOS node institutions was rewarding and lots of fun! Book Conceptual Modeling ER 2002

Download or read book Conceptual Modeling ER 2002 written by Stefano Spaccapietra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-06-30 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than 20 years, the series of Conceptual Modeling – ER conferences has provided a forum for research communities and practitioners to present and - change research results and practical experiences in the ?elds of database design and conceptual modeling. Throughout the years, the scope of these conferences has extended from database design and speci?c topics of that area to more u- versal or re?ned conceptual modeling, organizing originally weak or ill-structured information or knowledge in more cultured ways by applying various kinds of principles, abstract models, and theories, for di?erent purposes. At the same time, many technically oriented approaches have been developed which aim to facilitate the implementation of rather advanced conceptual models. Conceptual modeling is based on the process of conceptualization, and it is the core of system structuring as well as justi?cation for information systems development. It supports and facilitates the understanding, explanation, pred- tion, and reasoning on information and knowledge, and their manipulation in the systems, in addition to understanding and designing the functions of the systems. The conceptualization process aims at constructing concepts relevant for the knowledge and information system in question. Concepts in the human mind and concept descriptions in computerized information systems are quite di?erent things by nature, but both should be taken into account in conceptual modeling. Usually concept descriptions are properly observed, but concepts in the human mind and their properties are often neglected quite carelessly.

Book Advances in Spatial and Temporal Databases

Download or read book Advances in Spatial and Temporal Databases written by Christian S. Jensen and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-05-15 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seventh International Symposium on Spatial and Temporal Databases (SSTD 2001), held in Redondo Beach, CA, USA, July 12{15, 2001, brought together leading researchers and developers in the area of spatial, temporal, and spatio-temporal databases to discuss the state of the art in spatial and temporal data management and applications, and to understand the challenges and - search directions in the advancing area of data management for moving objects. The symposium served as a forum for disseminating research in spatial and temporal data management, and for maximizing the interchange of knowledge among researchers from the established spatial and temporal database com- nities. The exchange of research ideas and results not only contributes to the academic arena, but also bene ts the user and commercial communities. SSTD 2001 was the seventh in the series of symposia that started in Santa Barbara a dozen years ago and has since been held every two years, in Zurich, Singapore, Portland (Maine), Berlin, and Hong Kong. By 1999, the series had become well established as the premier international forum devoted solely to spatial database management, and it was decided to extend the scope of the series to also cover temporal database management. This extended scope was chosen due, in part, to the increasing importance of research that considers spatial and temporal aspects jointly.

This book was released on 2004-10-14 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The explosion in data exchange fostered by the success of the Web has restated semantics as a kernel issue in the development of services providing data and - formationtousersandapplicationsworldwide. Gridcomputing, a new?eld concentrating on "?exible, secure, coordinated resource sharing among dynamic collections of individuals, institutions, and resources (also referred to as virtual organizations)", has gathered momentum in the context of providing shared infrastructures for large-scale scienti?c computations and data analysis. Similarly, P2P computing has attracted substantial attention. Currently, attention is devoted to the provision of middleware services to makecomputationalresourcesinteroperableatthetechnicallevelandtoincrease the e?ciency of use of physical resources. However, as Grid and P2P computing infrastructures are being increasingly adopted, they are likely to have typical problems of information overload that manifest themselves in any large-scale infrastructure for information and application sharing (e.g., the WWW). The need for resource discovery, application and service interoperability, integration and composition manifest themselves in these infrastructures. The ability to interoperate at the semantic level will largely determine the continued success and utilization of these infrastructures
