Book excerpt: This Holy Book titled "Upanishads Dedicated to Lord Ram" is in TWO PARTS-viz. Part 1 and Part 2. It is a unique, rare and an excellent presentation of all the Upanishads dedicated to Lord Ram, all of which have been brought together under the cover of a single Book in a bilingual format (Hindi + English) for the first time in the world. Since this was a voluminous work, it became expedient to split it into TWO PARTS. However, it is advised and imperative for the reader to have both the parts concurrently as they together complete the full Book, and having the two parts at hand would make the reading seamless and understanding of the Upanishads easy as all of them are inter-related. This present volume is Part 1 of the 2-Part Book, and it contains the following three Upanishads: (i) Ram Purva Tapini Upanishad, (ii) Ram Uttar Tapini Upanishad, (iii) and Ram Rahasya Upanishad. All the other Upanishads dedicated to Lord Ram, viz. (i) Mukti Upanishad, (ii) Kalisantaran Upanishad, (iii) and Sita Upanishad have been included in Part 2 of this Book. Further, there are three Appendices added to Part 2, the first describing what a Upanishad is, the second quoting around 60 wonderful verses selected randomly from a wide swathe of Upanishadic Texts that bring to the reader the salient philosophy and teaching of these classical spiritual & metaphysical scriptures which have no parallel in the world, and the third gives the Key by which one can read the English Transliteration of the Sanskrit verses. The 'Worship Instrument' used in formal rituals has also been added. The Book contains the full Original Texts of the Upanishads with their verse-by-verse Roman Transliteration, followed by Hindi and English renderings and detailed explanatory notes in a simple language. This approach will surely make this Book exceptionally useful to even the lay reader, as much as it would be of great help and of reference value to the researchers and scholars of ancient Indian scriptures, philosophy and classics, both the temporal and the spiritual. This book was released on 1994 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The monkey-god Hanuman, one of contemporary Hinduism's most popular deities, has a long history in Indian art and literature. This study traces Hanuman's gradual evolution from his role as helper and messenger of Rama in the Valmiki Ramayana in the 3rd century B.C.E. to his more dominant function in Tulasi Dasa's Ramacaritamanasa, written circa 1575 C.E.The study begins with a concentrated overview of Hanuman's non-Aryan origins and later associations. It then illustrates and elucidated the growth of his character from Valmiki to Tulasi Dasa through several intermediary stages. The greater part of the book comprises a careful scene-by-scene comparative textual analysis of the Sanskrit and the Avadhi versions of the Rama legend which has been so immensely influential in Hindu culture. In the course of time, Hanuman changes from a perfect messenger to the ideal devotee who becomes an embodiment of his master in his complete surrender to Raghupati.

Download or read book Rapt in the Name written by Ramdas Lamb and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2012-02-01 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Rapt in the Name, Ramdas Lamb provides an intriguing account of the Ram bhakti tradition in India. Less well-known in the West than the tradition of devotion to Krishna, the Ram tradition is an important component of Hinduism. Ram is the most-worshipped form of the divine in North India today and has long been particularly important to those of the lower castes throughout India. Lamb explores both the evolution of the tradition and the rise of lower caste religious movements devoted to Ram, specifically the Ramnami Samaj, an Untouchable religious movement in Central India. Lamb's study of the Ramnamis has spanned nearly three decades, first on a personal level as a Hindu monk and later as both a friend and a researcher. He discusses the historical origins, as well as present-day forms and structure of the Samaj, including a description of its distinctive ritual dress and practices. Among the more innovative aspects of the sect is its adaptation of the story of Lord Ram that is uniquely woven into its devotional repetition of his name (Ramnam). In addition, Lamb shares biographical sketches of six Ramnamis, each of which reveals the freedom of individual exploration and expression that is integral to the sect. This is a fascinating account of religious life and adaptation on the periphery of society.

Download or read book The Dev G t written by C. Mackenzie Brown and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 1998-09-11 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a translation, with introduction, commentary, and annotation, of the medieval Hindu Sanskrit text the Devi Gita (Song of the Goddess). It is an important but not well-known text from the rich SAakta (Goddess) tradition of India. The Devi Gita was composed about the fifteenth century C.E., in partial imitation of the famous Bhagavad Gita (Song of the Lord), composed some fifteen centuries earlier. Around the sixth century C.E., following the rise of several male deities to prominence, a new theistic movement began in which the supreme being was envisioned as female, known as the Great Goddess (Maha-Devi). Appearing first as a violent and blood-loving deity, this Goddess gradually evolved into a more benign figure, a compassionate World-Mother and bestower of salvific wisdom. It is in this beneficent mode that the Goddess appears in the Devi Gita. This work makes available an up-to-date translation of the Devi Gita, along with a historical and theological analysis of the text. The book is divided into sections of verses, and each section is followed by a comment explaining key terms, concepts, ritual procedures, and mythic themes. The comments also offer comparisons with related schools of thought, indicate parallel texts and textual sources of verses in the Devi Gita, and briefly elucidate the historical and religious background, supplementing the remarks of the introduction.
