Book The Sri Lankan Economy

Download or read book The Sri Lankan Economy written by Prema-chandra Athukorala and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2017-10-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a pivotal period in Sri Lanka's economic development. The end of conflict opens a door for accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction. Reform is needed to regain momentum because fiscal imbalances and rising public debt could jeopardize macroeconomic stability. The economy would benefit from significant trade and commercial policy reform. The labor market suffers from sluggish growth of formal sector employment and from skills mismatches, which can be addressed by changes in education policy and systems. The book analyzes these and related critical constraints on the Sri Lankan economy, and proposes a set of policy reforms that would lay the foundations for more rapid and inclusive development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sri Lanka has shown remarkable persistence in low female labor force participation rates—at 36 percent from 2015 to 2017, compared with 75 percent for same-aged men—despite overall economic growth and poverty reduction over the past decade. The trend stands in contrast to the country’s achievements in human capital development that favor women, such as high levels of female education and low total fertility rates, as well as its status as an upper-middle-income country. This study intends to better understand the puzzle of women’s poor labor market outcomes in Sri Lanka. Using nationally representative secondary survey data—as well as primary qualitative and quantitative research—it tests three hypotheses that would explain gender gaps in labor market outcomes: (1) household roles and responsibilities, which fall disproportionately on women, and the associated sociophysical constraints on women’s mobility; (2) a human capital mismatch, whereby women are not acquiring the proper skills demanded by job markets; and (3) gender discrimination in job search, hiring, and promotion processes. Further, the analysis provides a comparison of women’s experience of the labor market between the years leading up to the end of Sri Lanka’s civil war (2006†“09) and the years following the civil war (2010†“15). The study recommends priority areas for addressing the multiple supply- and demand-side factors to improve women’s labor force participation rates and reduce other gender gaps in labor market outcomes. It also offers specific recommendations for improving women’s participation in the five private sector industries covered by the primary research: commercial agriculture, garments, tourism, information and communication technology, and tea estate work. The findings are intended to influence policy makers, educators, and employment program practitioners with a stake in helping Sri Lanka achieve its vision of inclusive and sustainable job creation and economic growth. The study also aims to contribute to the work of research institutions and civil society in identifying the most effective means of engaging more women— and their untapped potential for labor, innovation, and productivity—in Sri Lanka’s future.

Book Sri Lanka Crisis

Download or read book Sri Lanka Crisis written by Rayan Musk and published by Rose Publishing (CA). This book was released on 2024-01-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shockwaves have been sent across the nation as a result of the terrible economic crisis that Sri Lanka is currently experiencing. Sri Lanka is a nation that is well-known for its extensive cultural history and picturesque landscapes. Because of the ongoing economic issues, officials, corporations, and citizens alike are experiencing a profound sense of apprehension for the future. There is a complicated interaction of elements that have converged to create a perfect storm, and this is at the core of the economic instability that Sri Lanka is experiencing. The ever-increasing burden of debt that the government is carrying is one of the key factors that has led to the crisis. The management of Sri Lanka's external debt has been difficult, which has resulted in a perilous financial condition for the country. A vicious cycle has been created as a result of the servicing of debts, which, when combined with a currency that is devaluing, has put an enormous amount of strain on the economic stability of the nation. Despite the fact that Sri Lanka's economy was already in a precarious state, the COVID-19 outbreak has made these issues even more difficult to manage. The reduction in tourism, interruptions in supply chains, and the subsequent drop in worldwide demand have all had a significant impact on major industries. There has been a considerable drop in tourism, which is a big contribution to the country's GDP. As a result, many enterprises that are dependent on tourism are in a precarious situation. The economic downturn that was caused by the pandemic has brought to light the vulnerabilities that are present in Sri Lanka's economic system, which thus calls for actions that are both urgent and comprehensive. The escalation of prices across a wide range of commodities has given rise to inflation, which has arisen as another pressing worry. There has been an influence on the purchasing power of citizens as a result of the rising cost of living, which has led to increased financial difficulties for many. The government is currently confronted with the challenging issue of striking a balance between the need to protect needy communities and the necessity to employ inflation control measures Instability in political systems has also been a contributor to the current economic crisis. The nation has been through a number of political shifts, which has resulted in uncertainty and has had an impact on the confidence of traders and investors. The nation's ability to generate the capital that is necessary for economic recovery has been hindered as a result of the diminished amount of foreign direct investment. As a result of the close scrutiny that has been directed on the government's response to these difficulties, individuals and experts have been calling for policies that are both effective and transparent in order to address the underlying causes of the crisis. The Sri Lankan government is now investigating a variety of potential solutions in order to address these economic difficulties. Among these are the implementation of austerity measures, the pursuit of aid from international financial organizations, and the beginning of economic reforms in order to entice foreign investment. It is important to note that the success of these programs is contingent not only on their timely and efficient implementation, but also on the coordinated efforts of a number of different stakeholders.

Book Decentralization and Development of Sri Lanka Within a Unitary State

Download or read book Decentralization and Development of Sri Lanka Within a Unitary State written by N.S. Cooray and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-19 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive volume provides uniquely diverse insights into various aspects of decentralization and development from both developed and developing countries, with special reference to Sri Lanka. For a quarter century, Sri Lanka was battered by its prolonged civil war, which ended in 2009, but has now achieved relative peace and stability. Having developed rapidly, Sri Lanka offers a classic example for developing countries. There is, however, a strong need, particularly in the context of postwar conflict, to formulate policies for reconciliation, peace building, and development at all levels—local, provincial, and national. Decentralization itself is not a new subject; however, how to devolve power to local administrative levels within a unitary system and how to link the devolved power to make local administrative systems more conducive to development and provide better services for citizens are challenging tasks in many countries. Taking into account the developmental, governance, and conciliatory needs and the sensitivity of central–local relations, this volume critically examines the local government systems in Sri Lanka. It also proposes a viable, effective and autonomous local-level administrative unit based, which draws on experiences from Japan and other countries, and identifies the role and functions of such a unit. The book presents commissioned papers from a three-year research project undertaken by internationally respected experts with financial support by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) under a Grant-in-Aid for Scientific Research.
