Book Case Studies in Economic Survival Experiences from Sri Lanka

Download or read book Case Studies in Economic Survival Experiences from Sri Lanka written by Sumudu Senani Perera and published by . This book was released on 2023-10-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 'Case Studies in Economic Survival: Experiences from Sri Lanka' is the product of the Business Forum, one of the main events featuring under the 19th International Conference on Business Management (ICBM) - 2022 organized by the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce (FMSC) of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka. The purpose of publishing Case Studies in this nature is to help people learn the body of knowledge we call management and then apply it to their business organizations. The book is arranged in a logical sequence of case studies that continually builds on and connects with the chosen theoretical perspectives. This book also creates a platform to a meaningful partnership between the academia and the industry to support the growth of the next generation of businesses and their leaders. It has been kept to a reasonable length with seven stories of different organizations that have been connected into a cohesive body of knowledge. These stories typically provide wide-ranging evidence about the business situations in question, the problems encountered in the pandemic, how they were approached, and to what results. The ICBM 2022 in the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in Sri Lanka makes history by launching this case study book exposing resilient organizations in Sri Lanka that surmounted challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Consistent with the pertinent theme of the ICBM 2022 conference, "Equitable Recovery Amidst Economic Crisis: Post-Pandemic Challenges and the Way Forward", we initiated writing of the 'Case Studies in Economic Survival: Experiences from Sri Lanka' as a collaborative endeavor by the academia and the industry. These meticulously and scholastically developed case studies fill the gap hitherto left by the dearth of case studies carried out in the Sri Lankan context. Professionals in different fields may use case studies as part of their research into various issues of interest for their organizations.

Book Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID 19 and Protracted Conflict

Download or read book Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID 19 and Protracted Conflict written by Zsuzsanna Jakab and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-07-10 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented disruption worldwide highlighting once again the interdependency of health and socioeconomic development, and the global lack of health systems resilience. Two years into the pandemic, most countries report sustained disruptions across service delivery platforms and health areas with a profound impact on health outcomes. The impact of these disruptions is magnified within marginalized communities and in countries experiencing protracted conflict. There is an urgent need to focus on recovery through investment in the essential public health functions (EPHFs) and the foundations of health systems with a focus on primary health care, and whole-of-government and -society engagement. The aim of this Research Topic is to gather, transfer and promote operationalization of key experiences from COVID-19 to inform global and country level recovery that better promote health; guide policy direction towards building health systems resilience; and thereby ensure economic and social prosperity. Experience with COVID-19 has demonstrated that traditional approaches to health system strengthening have failed to achieve the complementary goals of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and health security with the divide between the most vulnerable and well-off only widening. Much of what had been learned from previous experiences such as Ebola in West Africa has not been widely applied. This has left health and economic systems vulnerable to 21 st century public health challenges, ranging from conflict and natural disasters to aging demographics and rising rates of non-communicable and communicable diseases and antimicrobial resistance. These challenges require intentional focus and investment as well as whole-of-government and -society engagement with health to build health system resilience. Greater action is needed to prevent the devastating effects of war and conflict on the health of the most vulnerable. This Research Topic will convene the knowledge and practices of leaders in public health, health systems, and humanitarian and development sectors. This is to ensure lessons from COVID-19 inform the recovery agenda and promote sustainable health and socioeconomic recovery for all. Lest we forget and find ourselves again unprepared and vulnerable in the face of an even greater threat.

Book Economic Impacts of COVID 19 Macro and Microeconomics Evidences from Sri Lanka

Download or read book Economic Impacts of COVID 19 Macro and Microeconomics Evidences from Sri Lanka written by N.P. Ravindra Deyshappriya and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The World Health Organization declared a global emergency condition due to widespread of COVID-19 across the globe. The present study comprehensively examines the impacts of COVID-19 on GDP, employment, inflation, stock market, externa sector performance and poverty in the context of Sri Lanka. The analysis reveals COVID-19 creates adverse impacts on both GDP and employment in Sri Lanka, despite magnitude of the impacts is significantly lower than that of South Asian average. Apart from that, 'panic buying', interrupted domestic production and distribution and restriction on imports have created an inflationary pressure on the economy led by headline inflation. Moreover, COVID-19 drastically affected Colombo Stock Exchange in Sri Lanka, reporting a historical low in mid-March 2020. External sector performance of Sri Lanka has weakened due to reduced export earnings, tourism receipts and remittances and in turn Sri Lanka rupee has sharply depreciated against major currencies in the world. In addition to major macroeconomic impacts of COVID-19, the study also observed microeconomic impacts of COVID-19 through projecting poverty dynamics under four-way poverty classification. The predictions reveals that there is a greater potential of increasing poverty incidence related to all poverty types (Extreme Poor, Poor and Vulnerable Non-poor) under present pandemic situation. Ultimately, the welfare effect of COVID-19 which will be higher than expected will essentially hinder the long-term economic development process of the country. Therefore, appropriate measures should be taken to regain the economy while controlling the spread of the pandemic.

Book Striving for Equity

Download or read book Striving for Equity written by Margaret Jones and published by . This book was released on 2020-06 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the period from independence in 1948 to the millennium this book is an historical analysis of the process by which Sri Lanka became a model of how a nation with limited resources could nevertheless achieve health indicators on a par with the developed world through the development of a primary healthcare system. In so doing it had to interact and negotiate with global health actors such as the World Health Organization while maintaining its own agency. Based on a close reading of original archival sources it is an in-depth exploration of these questions viewed through a series of case studies which highlight both the successes which contributed to this outcome and the inadequacies of those efforts when seen at the micro level. A primary health care infrastructure is an essential prerequisite for the delivery of preventive health care; how this was developed and delivered to the entire population forms the first substantive chapter. Since the incidence of tuberculosis in a community serves as a marker of a country's achievement in meeting basic needs and establishing social justice there follows an examination of policies to control TB. The most vulnerable group in a nation are its children and they are also the source of a nation's future human capital. Two chapters discuss children's health; firstly the problem of childhood malnutrition and secondly the implementation of the successful immunization programme. Demographic change means a double disease burden of non-communicable diseases alongside communicable diseases and how this considerable challenge is met is the subject of the last chapter. Furthermore these topics enable a discussion of the significance and problems of an international policy transfer to less well-resourced environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Presenting a wide range of international case studies, the contributors to this book study the impact of Covid-19 on the risks faced by communities around the globe. Examining cases from the Americas, Europe and Asia - including Mexico, Brazil, China, India, France, and Belgium - Kuah, Guiheux, Lim and their collaborators look at how communities have coped with the social and economic impacts of the pandemic, as well as the public health concerns. Using a framework of risks, fear, and trust, they evaluate how the global health crisis has both revealed and exacerbated a deep crisis of confidence in institutions and systems around the world. In reaction to this they also look at how individuals, social groups and communities have faced fears and built trust at a more local level. The units of spatial analysis in these cases include urban cities, neighbourhoods, slum settlements, migrant camps, schools, markets and homes, for a broad spectrum of case types and rich empirical data. Essential reading for social scientists including sociologists, anthropologists and scholars of other disciplines looking to understand the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic internationally and on a multi-scalar level"--

Book Democracies Divided

Download or read book Democracies Divided written by Thomas Carothers and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2019-09-24 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A must-read for anyone concerned about the fate of contemporary democracies.”—Steven Levitsky, co-author of How Democracies Die 2020 CHOICE Outstanding Academic Title Why divisions have deepened and what can be done to heal them As one part of the global democratic recession, severe political polarization is increasingly afflicting old and new democracies alike, producing the erosion of democratic norms and rising societal anger. This volume is the first book-length comparative analysis of this troubling global phenomenon, offering in-depth case studies of countries as wide-ranging and important as Brazil, India, Kenya, Poland, Turkey, and the United States. The case study authors are a diverse group of country and regional experts, each with deep local knowledge and experience. Democracies Divided identifies and examines the fissures that are dividing societies and the factors bringing polarization to a boil. In nearly every case under study, political entrepreneurs have exploited and exacerbated long-simmering divisions for their own purposes—in the process undermining the prospects for democratic consensus and productive governance. But this book is not simply a diagnosis of what has gone wrong. Each case study discusses actions that concerned citizens and organizations are taking to counter polarizing forces, whether through reforms to political parties, institutions, or the media. The book’s editors distill from the case studies a range of possible ways for restoring consensus and defeating polarization in the world’s democracies. Timely, rigorous, and accessible, this book is of compelling interest to civic activists, political actors, scholars, and ordinary citizens in societies beset by increasingly rancorous partisanship.

Book In Search of a New Model for Rationalizing Primary Health Care System in Sri Lanka

Download or read book In Search of a New Model for Rationalizing Primary Health Care System in Sri Lanka written by Samanthi Bandara and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ministry of Health in Sri Lanka is currently examining the evidence for rationalizing primary level health care system in order to better address the socio-demographic and epidemiological transition challenges. The policy documents, Health Master Plan (2007-2016) and the Hospital Re-Categorization (2005) are important milestones and the policy implications are important in identifying a rational model. The “Samadigama” Primary Health Care (PHC) centre which was initiated as a post tsunami intervention providing care to a resettled community was used as a pilot intervention supporting the evidence for developing a comprehensive primary health care model for the country. This centre established in 2007 in the southern part of Sri Lanka, namely Hambantota district, and it is based on the classical Primary Care Concept in Taiwan. The study aimed to analyze the total cost and unit cost of “Samadigama” PHC Centre, considering a provider's perspective. This centre is an integrated model providing both curative and preventive care services through one center at a primary level facility. The step-down technique was used to calculate the unit cost of each service department. The data was collected using secondary sources and observation method. Unit costs for out patient care, medical clinic, antenatal clinic, family planning clinic, dental clinic and traditional medicine clinic were calculated. The unit costs were relatively high due to relative underutilization of services which is attributed to lack of full-time staff. Extending the number of full-time staff and number of service hours is recommended as the projections show the unit costs will be reduced by 35% for out patient care, 75% for medical clinic, 9% for dental clinic, 9% for traditional medicine clinic and 1% for antenatal clinic and family planning clinic. This study could be a benchmark for future cost evaluation studies, and the costing information on unit costs could be used for future planning and budgeting exercises.
