Download or read book Sri Brhad bhagavatamrta written by Gopiparanadhana Dasa and published by The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hero’s quest for the extraordinary – an ever-recurring theme in literature – reflects the urge of every heart at its noblest to discover the full possibilities of life. Anyone dissatisfied with the scant potential of mundane existence is naturally stimulated by the prospect of finding, even vicariously, a world of greater liberty. There should be some better place for the soul. Why should happiness be so elusive, and why should confusion and resentment always shroud the mind’s eye, making it unable to see clearly what is in front of it? Srila Sanatana Gosvami’s Brhad-bhagavatamrta, written in Sanskrit nearly five hundred years ago, is a gemlike example of the quest genre, but different from the sort commonly encountered in fable and fiction. Narada and Gopa-kumara, the respective heroes of this book’s two parts, are searching for a key to fulfillment much subtler than wealth, influence, mundane love, the Fountain of Youth, or even the Holy Grail. Narada has vast experience of the cosmos; Gopa-kumara is illiterate and naive; yet they share the same vision of what is most valuable. What both want is not to conquer or exploit on any level, but to explore the mystery of selfless service. As Narada already knows, and Gopa-kumara will gradually learn, the superior mode of life they seek is personal and defined by the interplay of those who take part in it, rather than by material laws of nature. In Volume One of Sri Brhad-Bhagavatamrta, the great sage Narada, a pure devotee of Krishna, travels from earth to heaven and the spiritual world in search of the greatest recipient of Krishna's mercy. As he proceeds on his journey, Narada meets many pure devotees of Krishna and gives evidence to show how that devotee has been favored by Krishna. Each devotee, embarrassed to hear himself praised, recommends that Narada visit another devotee. Narada sees greater and greater manifestations of Krishna's mercy, until he finds those pure souls who embody the complete manifestation of Krishna's mercy – the exalted gopis of Vraja. Join Narada on his quest and discover his awe, love, and deepest appreciation as he grasps the gopis' position as Krishna's best devotees.

In Part Two of Sri Brhad-Bhagavatamrta, the book’s hero, Gopa-kumara, an illiterate, naive cowherd living near Govardhana Hill in Vrindavan, is inspired by a mysterious bhakta to start on a spiritual quest. His journey takes him in this volume all the way from his home to Vaikuntha-Ayodhya, and from sraddha to almost-perfect prema. Gopa-kumara’s adventure is different from the hero’s journeys we read about in less spiritual literature, because he explores the material universe not with his sights set on mundane wealth or power or romance but the sweetness of confidential, selfless, devotional service to his dearest Lord and friend, Sri Krishna. It is this focus that takes him beyond all temporal dimensions into the spiritual world beyond.

Book excerpt: Sanātana Gosvāmī wrote Bṛhad-vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī, an elaborate commentary on the Tenth Canto to explain in detail what Śrīdhara Svāmī covered briefly, and to give devotional meaning where Śrīdhara Svāmī gave brahmanvada explanations. Jīva Gosvāmī wrote Laghu-vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī as a summary version of Bṛhad-vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī. The commentaries on first eight chapters of the Tenth Canto are virtually the same but after that point there are increasing differences. Ultimately this commentary is approximately same size as the Bṛhad-vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī. He completed this work in Śakābda 1504.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the priceless books contributed by Srila Sanatana Gosvami to the literary heritage of the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, his Sri Krsna-lila-stava is the shortest and simplest. An offering of praise in 432 verses, it gives a personal meditation of Krishna's Vrindavana pastimes as told by Sukadeva in Srimad-Bhagavatam. This is an authentic spiritual work that has inspired Gaudiya Vaishnavas for centuries. Able to touch both heart and mind, it steps forward from a living tradition to bear witness to the working of the spirit. This edition of the Sri Krsna-lila-stava is especially praiseworthy because it gives a scholarly but easily understandable translation of the Sanskrit text interspersed with helpful and sensitive commentaries. In Sri Krsna-lila-stava, Sanatana evokes remembrances of Krishna's childhood pastimes by summarizing Sukadeva's narration in simple verses. These verses give us a taste of Krishna's Vrindavana pastimes, one after another, thus immersing us in the nectar of the Bhagavatam.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Deep in lost history, did high civilizations and advanced knowledge thrive? The ancient Vedic literatures of India describe a worldwide civilization that flourished at a time when modern historians insist that humans like us existed simply as hunter-gatherers. This Vedic civilization, centered in India, employed technologies based on a scientific understanding of the physical elements and forces we know today, as well as more subtle conscious elements. Devamrita Swami, who has spent a lifetime in his own search for Vedic India, takes us on a journey of intellectual discovery through the history of the remarkable Vedic civilization and its knowledge, locked in the ancient literatures of India. His wit and wisdom combine to make our search for Vedic India not only illuminating but entertaining. He tells us not only the truths of Vedic India, but how they are again coming to be. Searching for Vedic India thus takes us not only into the past, but into the future.
