Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years on this earth the mix of animals, plants and birds of the air have lived together and nearly all have survived. A few have become extinct for some reason or other, probably due to atmospheric changes over the earth's surface. It seems that the predators and prey have remained about equal. If they had not, there would have been some change and one would have become extinct. Most of the animals, birds, insects etc, are pretty much divided between predator and prey, which would keep a balance. Only the vegetarians are not among the predator class. They do not prey on any animal, insect or fowl, but they are prey for any of the larger predators, the meat eaters. When man first appeared on this earth, in whatever shape or form, it appears that he was both a meat eater and a vegetable eater. He then became both a predator and prey. He began to eat meat and had to learn to defend himself against larger animals and predators that wanted to eat him. A normal natural way of controlling population was changed by man's greater intelligence giving him weapons to defend himself against any predator. This made him the strongest and greatest predator.

Book excerpt: @font-face { font-family: "Times";}@font-face { font-family: "Verdana";}@font-face { font-family: "Palatino";}p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } Up on the River is John Madson’s loving and often hilarious tribute to the people, animal life, and places of the Upper Mississippi. Madson’s Upper Mississippi is the part “between the saints,” from St. Louis to St. Paul, where for thirty years he explored the bright waters of the upper reaches of the mighty river itself as well as the tangled multitude of sloughs, cuts, and side channels that wander through its wooded islands and floodplain forests. “Some of my best time on the River has been in the company of game wardens, biologists, commercial fishermen, clammers, trappers, hunters, and a smelly, mud-smeared coterie of river rats in general, and my views of the River are far more likely to reflect theirs than those of the transportation industry,” Madson writes of his thirty-year acquaintance with the Mississippi. Traveling mainly by canoe and johnboat, he tells of encounters between archetypal commercial fishermen and archetypal game wardens over hot fish chowder, fishing for crappies in the tops of submerged trees and for walleyes amid gale force winds, nesting and migrating herons and ducks and eagles, the histories of river logging and pearling and button making, and towboats and barges and the lives of the “ramstugenous” people who move freight on the river. Learning about the Upper Mississippi via the wry tutelage of John Madson, who discovered that “whenever I am out on a river some of its freeness rubs off on me,” readers of this classic book will also come under the spell of this freeness.

Book Under the Gun

    Book Details:
  • Author : James D. Wright

  • Pages : 364 pages

Download or read book Under the Gun written by James D. Wright and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1978, the Social and Demographic Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, received a grant from the National Institute of Justice to undertake a comprehensive review of the literature on weapons, crime, and violence in the United States. The purpose of the project is best described as a "sifting and winnowing" of the claims and counterclaims from both sides of the Great American Gun War—the perennial struggle in American political life over what to do, if anything, about guns, about violence, and about crime. The review and analysis of the available studies consumed the better part of three years; the results of this work are contained in this volume. The intention of any review is to take stock of the available fund of knowledge in some topical area. Under the Gun is no different: our goal has been to glean from the volumes of previous studies those facts that, in our view, seem firmly and certainly established; those hypotheses that seem adequately supported by, or at least approximately consistent with, the best available research evidence; and those areas or topics about which, it seems, we need to know a lot more than we do. One of our major conclusions can be stated in advance: despite the large number of studies that have been done, many critically important questions have not been adequately researched, and some of them have not been examined at all. Much of the available research in the area of weapons and crime has been done by advocates for one or another policy position. As a consequence, the manifest intent of many "studies" is to persuade rather than to inform. We have tried to approach the topic from a purely agnostic point of view, treating as an open question what policies should be enacted with regard to gun, or crime, control. Thus, we have tried to judge each study on its own merits, on the basis of the routine standards normally applied to social-scientific research, and not on the basis of how effectively it argues for a particular policy direction. It would, of course, be presumptuous to claim that we have set aside all our own biases in conducting this study. Whether or not our treatment is fair and objective is clearly something for the reader, and not us, to decide.
