Book excerpt: Who knew that one little noise could set off a whole cacophony? In this chain-reaction story, the animal world wakes up with a squeak! Early one morning, a gentle breeze tickles the ear of a small mouse, and he wakes up with a squeak! That squeak wakes up the some chipmunks, who rattle tree branches and knock pinecones into the river. Those pinecones wake the trout, who splash around and wake up an elk on the riverbank. And so goes the story of Squeak!, a chain-reaction story set in a beautiful, rolling landscape with animals who are all woken up one by one with the rising of the sun. With lush and vivid art, and plenty of fun animal noises on each page, this story is a perfect read-aloud to wake up to--or to read any time of day. Praise for Squeak!: * "The text is melodic and vivid [and] a joy to read aloud . . . A surefire hit for storytime, one-on-one reading, and gift giving." --Booklist, *STARRED REVIEW* *"This adorable circular story for young readers is a great way to start or end the day with a little humor." --SLJ, *STARRED REVIEW* "A delightful, onomatopoeic introduction to the interactive sounds of awakening animals." --Kirkus Reviews

Book There s a Word for It Revised Edition

Download or read book There s a Word for It Revised Edition written by Charles Harrington Elster and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-07-05 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here's an irresistible invitation to discover a treasure trove of exceptional words you can use to add sophistication to your vocabulary and charm to your repartee. Consider that without realizing it you may have engaged in acokoinonia (sex without passion or desire), been bored to tears by the company of a philodox (someone in love with his or her opinions), or suffered from recurrent matutolypea (getting up on the wrong side of the bed). Presented with panache by the language connoisseur whom William Safire calls "ek-STROR-di-ner-ee," There's a Word for It will add a dash of wit to your daily life -- lest anyone mistake you for a sumph (stupid oaf) or fritlag (a good-for-nothing).

Book Touch the Face of God

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inspirational novel explores the drama, sweep, and grandeur of World War II--those who fought it overseas and those who lived through it on the home front--and a time when faith in God was our national security. "Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth . . . Put out my hand, and touched the face of God"--John Gillespie Magee, Jr., a WWII airman who died in combat at the age of 19. It has been called "The Last Good War" and those who fought it have been called "The Greatest Generation." They lived every day as if it were their last--loving, laughing, and trusting that God held their future. In this moving novel, Lt. Mark White, a B-17 bomber pilot, meets Emily Hagan only weeks before he ships out to England. They fall in love through letters as each faces the war on separate sides of the Atlantic, but will the war and a misunderstanding tear them apart forever? Lt. Lee Arlington Grant has disappointed his military family by becoming a chaplain instead of a warrior. He hopes his service in the war will heal his rift with his father while he shares Christ with his fellow soldiers-especially Tom Canby. Their lives and the lives of the men and women who fight at their side are interwoven with danger, romance, tragedy, and ultimately hope as the war and their roles in it draw to a close. This powerful story is about a man's love for a woman, the soldiers' love for their country, and the love of God for each of His children. Written by a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War, Touch The Face of God brings to life a time and a place that is quickly being forgotten.

Book Animal Languages in the Middle Ages

Download or read book Animal Languages in the Middle Ages written by Alison Langdon and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this interdisciplinary volume explore language, broadly construed, as part of the continued interrogation of the boundaries of human and nonhuman animals in the Middle Ages. Uniting a diverse set of emerging and established scholars, Animal Languages questions the assumed medieval distinction between humans and other animals. The chapters point to the wealth of non-human communicative and discursive forms through which animals function both as vehicles for human meaning and as agents of their own, demonstrating the significance of human and non-human interaction in medieval texts, particularly for engaging with the Other. The book ultimately considers the ramifications of deconstructing the medieval anthropocentric view of language for the broader question of human singularity.

Book Reduplication in Indigenous Languages of South America

Download or read book Reduplication in Indigenous Languages of South America written by Gale Goodwin Gómez and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-04-17 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The morphological process of reduplication occurs in languages throughout the world. Reduplication in indigenous languages of South America is the first volume to focus on reduplication in South America. The indigenous languages of South America remain under-documented and little accessible to theoretical linguistics. Most regions and language families of the continent are represented in articles based on recent fieldwork by the authors. Included are data concerning a diverse set of reduplication phenomena from the Andes, Amazonia, and other regions of the continent. A wide range of language families and isolates are discussed, such as Tupian, Quechuan, Mapuche, Tacanan, Arawakan, Barbacoan, and Macro-Jê. Several languages present unusual properties, some of which violate presumed universals, such as no partial without full reduplication.
