Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Professor Errol E. Harris presented the first three chapters of Atheism and Theism as public lectures at Tulane University on January 20-22, 1975. The lecture series was made possible by a grant from the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation of New York City. Those of us who had the pleasure of hearing the lectures formed the judgment that they deserved publication to reach a wider audience and to assure a more permanent reeord. We invited Professor Harris to allow us to publish his lectures in Tulane Studies in Philosophy. On his part, he de veloped the themes of the lectures into a more comprehensive and lasting work. With Professor Harris's approval, we are taking the unprecedented step of devoting Volume XXVI of Tulane Studies in Philosophy to the publication of Atheism and Theism. We are certain that it will advance the fundamentally philosophical argument surrounding theism and Christianity. We are also convinced that it will add substantialIy to the prestige of our series of annua1 volumes of philosophy, now in its twenty-sixth year. 'Ve wish to express our thanks to the Franklin J. Matchette Foundation for the original grant sup porting the lectures and to Professor Harris for presenting first the lectures and then the book. R. C. W. A. J. R.

Book excerpt: The attitude of a person measures the altitude of his or her success and happiness. Success, and as a resultant happiness, is not determined by how much you earn or what is your status in society. It is determined by whether or not you achieve your chosen goals in life and how you view them. Each person's goals are different. Therefore it is essential for every individual to crystallize his or her vision in order to develop his/her own paradigm and path to success. And this book presents a practical guide to achieve success and happiness in life. Much of what is written is based on the author's own experiences and the philosophy which he has developed by active interaction with others as well as the study of the writings and experiences of great personalities across the world.

Download or read book Mindfulness Yoga written by Frank Jude Boccio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2005-06-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you have no background in meditation or yoga or have been practicing for years, Mindfulness Yoga is for you. This groundbreaking book introduces an entirely new form of yoga, Mindfulness Yoga, which seamlessly integrates the Buddha's teachings on the Four Foundations of Mindfulness with traditional asana yoga practice. Mindfulness Yoga emphasizes the spiritual side of yoga practice, an aspect often overlooked in a culture that tends to fixate solely on the physical benefits of yoga. Unlike any other Buddhism-meets-yoga book, Mindfulness Yoga presents the two disciplines as a single practice that brings health to the body and liberates the mind and spirit, awakening compassion and fostering equanimity and joy. Mindfulness Yoga will appeal to the many people who have an interest in yoga, Buddhism, and meditation, but who may not have been able to find a teacher who could bring these practices together in a meaningful, practical way. In the first part of the book, author Frank Jude Boccio offers a superb and lively introduction to the Buddha's teachings and locates them within the larger context of the Indian spiritual traditions. Then, in the second half of the book, Boccio offers three complete Mindfulness Yoga sequences, including over 100 pictures, with detailed guidance for body, breath, and mind. Special lay-flat binding makes this book even more useful as a practice aid.

Book How Dysfunctional Families Spur Mental Disorders

Download or read book How Dysfunctional Families Spur Mental Disorders written by David M. Allen MD and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines various scientific, economic, and cultural forces that have affected the mental health field's viewpoint—and that of society in general—regarding the genesis of some behavioral disorders, and how dysfunctional family dynamics play an often overlooked role. Millions of Americans have psychological issues or are affected by those of their family members, ranging from anxiety and bipolar disorder to mood and personality disorders. The growth of Big Pharma, combined with an increasing desire of managed care providers to find simple and "quick fixes," has resulted in an often myopic focus on biological causes of dysfunctional symptoms. There is plenty of evidence to indicate that this propensity to only prescribe pills is often deeply misguided, however. This book examines the role of dysfunctional family interactions in the genesis and maintenance of certain behavioral problems. The author presents a case for regaining a balance in terms of the biological, psychological, and family-system factors in psychiatric disorders and suggests a way to accomplish this.

  • Author : Howard Spring
  • Publisher : eBookIt.com
  • Release : 2021-02-08
  • ISBN : 1456636782
  • Pages : 810 pages

Download or read book Fame Is the Spur written by Howard Spring and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021-02-08 with total page 810 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central character, Hamer Shawcross, starts as a studious boy in an aspirational working-class family in Ancoats, Manchester; he becomes a socialist activist and soon a career politician, who eventually is absorbed by the upper classes he had begun by combating. The author's sympathies obviously lie with Shawcross's friends and associates who remain faithful to the cause; however, many of the middle class and aristocratic characters are portrayed fairly sympathetically, and one character whose career parallels that of Shawcross in his rise from poverty to eminence is a market-boy who becomes a major capitalist. The book also gives a fair impression of the growth particularly of the Labour Party; historical characters, such as Keir Hardie, occasionally appear, and part of the book is taken up with the hardships of life for coal mining communities in South Wales at the turn of the 20th century. The treatment of the militant women's suffrage movement is especially detailed--there are graphic descriptions of imprisonment and forcible feeding of hunger strikers. Fame is the Spur covers the rise of the socialist labour movement in Britain from the mid 19th century to the 1930s.
