Book excerpt: The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a high-resolution microwave-frequency telescope designed to observe the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB). To date, two cameras have been installed on the SPT to conduct two surveys of the CMB, the first in intensity only (SPT-SZ) and the second in intensity and polarization (SPTpol). A third-generation polarization-sensitive camera is currently in development (SPT-3G). This thesis describes work spanning all three instruments on the SPT. I present my work in time-reversed order, to follow the canonical narrative of instrument development, deployment, and analysis. First, the development and testing of novel 3-band multichroic Transition Edge Sensor (TES) bolometers for the SPT-3G experiment is detailed, followed by the development and deployment of the frequency multiplexed cryogenic readout electronics for the SPTpol experiment, and concluding with the analysis of data taken by the SPT-SZ instrument. I describe the development of a Bayesian likelihood based method I developed for measuring the integrated Comptonization (YSZ) of galaxy clusters from the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich (SZ) effect, and constraining galaxy cluster YSZ-mass scaling relations.

Book excerpt: The sensitivity of ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background telescopes has exploded over the past decade. Multichroic pixel design and improved wide-field optics have allowed for huge increases to the number of background limited detectors that can be installed into a single focal plane array. Such telescopes are on the cusp of detecting the elusive primordial gravitational waves predicted by models of cosmic inflation. They will also map vast numbers of galaxy clusters out to high redshifts, providing a powerful probe of evolving structure within the largest gravitationally bound objects in our Universe. This thesis covers several active areas of research relating to the instrumentation, observations, and scientific analysis for one of the worlds leading Cosmic Microwave Background telescopes, the South Pole Telescope. We begin by covering the design, operation, and performance of the third-generation South Pole Telescope camera, SPT-3G. The SPT-3G camera contains over 14,000 operable transition edge sensor detectors, and is on track to map a 1500~deg$2$ patch of the Cosmic Microwave Background to a depth of $\sim2~\mu$K-arcmin at 150~GHz. We follow this with a description of the cryogenic testbed environment that was developed for characterizing the SPT-3G detectors and readout in a laboratory environment. The dark testing results of transition edge sensor properties were used to fine-tune the fabrication process towards the desired detector performance, as well as informing future research and development efforts. This thesis concluded with an analysis of galaxy cluster pressure profiles using the cluster catalogue and data from the 2500~deg$^2$ SPT-SZ survey. Projected temperature profiles are computed using a multi-band least-squares fit and then fit to parametric pressure profile models. We find that the the average pressure at high radii is low compared to previous works, with the discrepancy driven by a population of clusters that display strongly peaked profiles with little extended signal. Morphologically different cluster subsamples are explored which show a measurably different pressure profile structure between relaxed and disturbed clusters. We also explore deviations from self similar scaling across the mass and redshift range of the SPT-SZ catalogue, finding that the measured evolution is driven by variations in the underlying cluster morphology.

Book excerpt: NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and ESA's XMM-Newton Observatory have been the pioneering satellites for studying the Universe with X-rays and the cornerstone of X-ray spectroscopy since their launches more than 20 years ago. The onboard gratings provide us a unique opportunity to distinguish individual spectral lines from different atoms thanks to their high energy resolutions. Enormous discoveries have been achieved by these two missions when observing a variety of X-ray-emitting astronomical objects, such as black holes, supernova remnants, clusters of galaxies, and stars. However, the data are limited to fairly bright X-ray sources. The recent JAXA's mission Hitomi opened a new window of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy thanks to its onboard X-ray calorimeter. Although this mission was shortly terminated due to a mishap, Hitomi left behind a few sets of observations awaiting more data mining. The first half of this book introduces the history of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopy and different generations of X-ray spectrometers. A tutorial guide on how to reduce, analyze, and understand the astronomical data from Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Hitomi is also included. The second half of the book reviews past results obtained by the high-resolution spectrometers on these missions on multiple topics and discusses possible discoveries by upcoming missions in the next decade.
