Book excerpt: The status of the Atlantic Research Corporation's Air Force Integrated High Payoff Rocket Propulsion Technology (IHPRPT) Performance Hall System (HPHS) contract to develop a 4.5 kW Hall effect thruster system is presented. The SPT-140 system heritage is described, and the members of the HPHS SPT-140 team are introduced. The objective of the Air Force contract are presented, and the SPT-140 system that has been designed to meet those objectives is described. To meet the IHPRPT goals, the magnetic system has been redesigned to improve thruster efficiency and life requirements. This and other accomplishments in the design and qualification of the SPT-140 system are presented along with the future milestones for the contract. The HPHs SPT-140 system will provide government and commercial customers an ideal propulsion system for a wide variety of LEO, GEO, and exploratory missions.

Book Photoabsorption Photoionization and Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Download or read book Photoabsorption Photoionization and Photoelectron Spectroscopy written by Joseph Berkowitz and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 490 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoabsorption, Photoionization, and Photoelectron Spectroscopy explores photoabsorption processes involving individual, isolated molecules in the wavelength or photon energy range from the ionization thresholds of molecules (usually in the vacuum ultraviolet region) through the soft and hard X-ray region and beyond the ""K edge."" The interaction between electromagnetic radiation and isolated molecules based on photoabsorption, photoionization, and photoelectron spectroscopy studies is described, along with the techniques for measurement of total and partial cross sections. This book is comprised of eight chapters and examines the decomposition of molecules and molecular ions as well as mildly excited (valence shell excitation) and highly excited (inner shell excitation) molecules. After providing a general theoretical background, it discusses certain classes of atoms and molecules and considers electromagnetic interactions with gases. The following chapters focus on photoabsorption below the first ionization limit; quasi-discrete states above the first ionization potential; and the ionization continuum. Total photoabsorption and photoionization cross sections for selected molecules are also considered, and the angular distribution of photoelectrons is analyzed. The various measurement techniques are described in the last chapter. This monograph will be of interest to radiation chemists, radiation physicists, photochemists, mass spectrometrists, and perhaps radiation biologists.

Book Initial Flight Test Evaluation of the F 15 ACTIVE Axisymmetric Vectoring Nozzle Performance

Download or read book Initial Flight Test Evaluation of the F 15 ACTIVE Axisymmetric Vectoring Nozzle Performance written by John S. Orme and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A full envelope database of a thrust-vectoring axisymmetric nozzle perfomance for the Pratt & Whitney Pitch/Yaw Balance Beam Nozzle (P/YBBN) is being developed using the F-15 Advanced Control Technology for Integrated Vehicles (ACTIVE) aircraft. At this time, flight research has been completed for steady-state pitch vector angles up to 20 deg. at an altitude of 30,000 ft from low power settings to maximum afterburner power. The nozzle performance database includes vector forces, internal nozzle pressures, and temperatures all of which can be used for regression analysis modeling. The database was used to substantiate a set of nozzle performance data from wind tunnel testing and computational fluid dynamic analyses. Findings from initial flight research at Mach 0.9 and 1.2 are presented in this paper. The results show that vector efficiency is strongly influenced by power setting. A significant discrepancy in nozzle performance has been discovered between predicted and measured results during vectoring.

Book Wave Turbine Analysis Tool Development

Download or read book Wave Turbine Analysis Tool Development written by Gerard E. Welch and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quasi-one-dimensional (Q-1-D) computational fluid dynamic solver, previously developed and validated for pressure-exchanger wave rotors, is extended in the present work to include the blade forces of power producing wave rotors (i.e., wave turbines). The accuracy of the single-passage Q-1-D solver is assessed relative to two two-dimensional solvers: a single-passage code and a multi-block stator/rotor/stator code. Comparisons of computed results for inviscid, steady and unsteady flows in passage geometries typical of wave rotors reveal that the blade force model is accurate and that the correlation (effective stress and heat flux) terms of the Q-1-D passage-averaged formulation can be neglected. The ends of the rotor passages pose particular challenges to Q-1-D formulations because the flow there must at times deviate significantly from the mean camber line angle to match the port flow fields. This problem is most acute during the opening and closing of the rotor passages. An example sub-model is developed to account for the deviation between the flow departure angle and the mean camber line exit angle that occurs as an inviscid flow decelerates to meet a uniform pressure boundary. Comparisons of results from four-port wave turbine simulations reveal that the Q-1-D solver currently overpredicts wave turbine performance levels and highlight the need to devote future effort to the boundary conditions and sub-models of the Q-1-D solver.
