Gathered together in one volume for the first time, here are all of the incomparable song lyrics of Irving Berlin the lyrics of more than 1,200 songs, 400 of which have never before appeared in print along with anecdotal, historical, and musicological commentary and dozens of photographs. Berlin came from a poor immigrant family and began his career as a singing waiter, but by the time he was nineteen he was publishing his songs and quickly found fame with "Alexander's Ragtime Band" in 1911. In the extraordinary six decades that followed, Berlin wrote one popular hit after another: Blue Skies * Always * Cheek to Cheek * White Christmas * God Bless America * There's No Business Like Show Business * and many more. He also wrote a number of the classics of musical theater's Golden Age, climaxing with Annie Get Your Gun . He penned three Astaire and Rogers films Top Hat, Carefree , and Follow the Fleet as well as the scores of Holiday Inn, Easter Parade , and other films. The breadth of his accomplishment is staggering.
Download or read book Fifty Songs from the Y an written by Charles R. Metzger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-05-18 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1967, gives us a rich sampling of ch’ü, the characteristic poem of the time of Yüan, when China was under Mongol rule. The ch’ü was a popular form of poetry in the sense that although it was written by literati, they wrote in the vernacular rather than in Classical Chinese. Each poem was written to be sung to an already popular tune. In addition to the ‘final translations’, the steps by which the translators proceeded from a literal, character-by-character translation through several intermediate stages to the final version are revealed in detail.

Larry Todd, Arts & Sciences Professor at Duke University, whose dedication to, study of, and mentorship in 19th-century music has shaped two generations of musicological study. Encompassing former/current students and colleagues, the contributing authors to this book investigate the life and work of the Mendelssohns, their circle, and issues of reception history; Beethoven and piano-related studies; and special musical relationships. The book's title references a famous quote by Felix Mendelssohn: "The essence of the beautiful is unity in variety." It also acknowledges the thematic diversity of this volume and the unifying effect that Todd's outstanding monographs on Felix and Fanny have had on a variety of musicians and scholars.

Download or read book William Carlos Williams and Alterity written by Barry Ahearn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-02-25 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many critics have noticed the paradoxes and contradictions in the work of William Carlos Williams but few have analyzed them in detail. Professor Ahearn argues that Williams criticism has not gone far enough in recognizing the uses Williams saw for contradiction. He contends that Williams began to acquire his own voice as a poet when he recognized that he could be a vehicle for contending voices. His reading departs from previous examinations of the early poetry in the emphasis it places on the poems as expressions of Williams' social position. We find a Williams whose contribution to modernism came not through a radical break with tradition or a rejection of inherited poetic norms alone, but rather in a cultivation of tension, conflict, and a kind of poetic "crisis" that could be held forth as the metier of the modernist writer.
Download or read book Songs for Young Singers written by Arden J. Hopkin and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2001-12-20 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year as high school solo and ensemble festivals approach, choir directors and voice teachers search for the right songs for their students to sing. There is so much music available for young developing voices, but how can an overworked teacher keep track of it all? Songs for Young Singers, a careful review of more than 2,000 songs printed in over 70 anthologies, has been written to address the needs of choir directors and voice teachers of junior high and high school age students. Section I lists songs by title as well as the anthologies in which they are found . Teachers wishing to explore the works of a particular composer will turn to section II, where songs are listed by composer. In section III, IV, and V, the songs are categorized by Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced levels for Quick reference. Section VI lists the anthologies reviewed with a detailed description of the vocal demand of each song in the anthology. The songs have been evaluated on seven criteria: melodic contour (including range), phrase length, language, rhythm, accompaniment, harmonic language, and dynamics, and are listed by title, composer, and level of difficulty.
