Book excerpt: Mary Webb was passionately devoted to revealing nature in all of its expressions and forms. She was diagnosed with Graves' disease at the age of 20, and in times of recovery she early noticed that her love of nature sped her healing. She also, in these sensitive times of contemplation and struggle, saw the natural world more tenderly and luminously; the urgencies of life were clearer. The Spring of Joy collects together a group of exquisite essays of appreciation, written with the idea of succouring 'the weary and wounded in the battle of life.' They are an extraordinary record of a woman's empathy, not only for the beauty, colour, form, delicacy and majesty of the natural world, but also for her fellow human beings who suffer.

Book excerpt: Four Seasons of Joy! takes a light-hearted look at the changes throughout the year as viewed by a child. Using different forms of poetry from Haiku to Limericks, rhyming verse and an acrostic, Four Seasons of Joy! can be read by early readers, but is even more fun to read with parents. Holly hopes parents will be encouraged to share their own childhood memories as they read with their child. “The joys of writing are many fold. They swirl through our imaginations and, like the changing seasons in this delightful collection of verse, capture the essence of times that do not stand still but leave us with constant hope and renewal. I’m delighted to see my friend Holly capture her creative and inspiring thoughts to paper and be able to pass them along to another generation. The poems are inspiring and so full of the love for family and friends. The gift of writing is, indeed, a gift to share.” - Clary Croft Clary Croft is a beloved, Nova Scotian folklorist, storyteller, folksinger, and artist. Know for his work on CBC radio and television, he is the acknowledged master of one of the richest repertoires in Canada and is a household name in Nova Scotia and beyond.

Book The Recordings of Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy

Download or read book The Recordings of Andy Kirk and his Clouds of Joy written by George Burrows and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-07-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andy Kirk's Clouds of Joy came from Kansas City to find nationwide fame in the later 1930s. The many records they made between 1929 and 1949 came to exemplify the Kansas City style of jazz, but they were also criticized for their populism and inauthenticity. In The Recordings of Andy Kirk' and his Clouds of Joy, George Burrows considers these records as representing negotiations over racialized styles between black jazz musicians and the racist music industry during a vital period of popularity and change for American jazz. The book explores the way that these reformative negotiations shaped and can be heard in the recorded music. By comparing the band's appropriation of musical styles to the manipulation of masks in black forms of blackface performance--both signifying and subverting racist conceptions of black authenticity--it reveals how the dynamic between black musicians, their audiences and critics impacted upon jazz as a practice and conception.
