Book One Thousand Days of Spring

Download or read book One Thousand Days of Spring written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A true story of a young successful stockbroker going broke, and lifting his thumb in search for his true self, by traveling the world. After almost five years of traveling on five different continents, Tomislav laid down in a hammock in one village on the coast of Ecuador, and started writing a book. He was determined to put down everything he knows about traveling, and with that, answer the questions that many people ask him for years: How is it possible to travel with almost no money? Is his way of traveling safe enough? What are the worst, and the best moments on the road? How can you earn money while traveling? Where to look for sponsors? How did his parents and friends react? Why is he traveling in the first place? Since it was impossible to give a simple and short answers to those questions, he started answering them in the only way possible - by telling his life story. Tomislav wrote about his student days in Croatia, about the days when he had a well paid job as a stockbroker, about going bankrupt, about turning his life around, about first ventures on the road with a backpack on his back, and about finding a way that he will follow in the years to come - by traveling. Tomislav wrote about hitchhiking in numerous countries, sleeping in homes of strangers, camping on the side of the road, eating in supermarkets and drinking beer in parks, volunteering, many anecdotes that he encountered on the road, natural beauties that left him breathless, and about the beautiful people that he met on the way.

Book excerpt: God didn’t design the Seder to put your kids to sleep. Instead, the Seder is an experience your family should love, treasure and remember. Have you ever wondered that there might be something more to Passover, the Seder and in the Haggadah—something that just might hold the secrets to living the life of joy and meaning that you were intended to? In The Telling, Mark Gerson, host of The Rabbi’s Husband podcast and renowned Jewish philanthropist, shows us how to make the Seder the most engaging, inspiring, and important night of the Jewish year. By using this book, you’ll be able to: · Lead the Seder with wisdom, confidence and fun that guests will remember · Make the Haggadah burst alive with insight for our opportunities, questions and challenges · Show Gentile friends the richness of the Jewish tradition · Instill a lasting love of Judaism within your children · Bring your family closer together and closer to God The Telling will enable you to see what the Haggadah really is: The Greatest Hits of Jewish Thought. This understanding will enable you to provide your guests with the most interesting, insightful and practically helpful night of the year—with teachings and lessons that will continue to brighten in the year to come. What leaders are saying about The Telling: Senator Joseph Lieberman: In The Telling, Mark Gerson brilliantly illuminates some of the big questions from the Haggadah whose answers can define what constitutes a meaningful life. By showing how the Haggadah enables its readers to deploy ancient Jewish wisdom to help answer the most contemporary questions, this book will help your Pesach to be what it can be: a life-guiding event, every year, for anyone who learns enough to give it the opportunity. Yossi Klein Halevi, Author of Letters to My Palestinian Neighbor and Like Dreamers Once a year, shortly before Pesach (emphatically not Passover!), Mark Gerson steps out of his role as a world-class entrepreneur and becomes a teacher of Torah—or more precisely, of the Haggadah. Those sessions have become legendary, and this book helps explain why. Here is Gerson's inimitable voice—passionate, erudite and most of all deeply in love with Jewish wisdom. Read this book to understand why the Haggadah has endured as a seminal Jewish text and why it remains no less relevant today than when it was first written. Gordon Robertson - CEO, The Christian Broadcasting Network "The Telling is the perfect introduction for those desiring to explore this aspect of Jewish life. This book is full of knowledge and thought-provoking questions and answers to the many mysteries that surround this sacred Jewish holiday." Sarah Waxman - Founder, At the Well "Just when I thought I knew everything about the Haggadah, I opened up Mark's book, and sure enough, I found myself thinking differently, questioning, and wrestling with big new ideas. I am excited to bring these ideas forward to my family's Seder and meaningful conversations all year round." Pastor Judy Shaw - Judy Shaw Ministries "As believers, there is so much we can gain from the story of the Exodus Passover, when God brought the children of Israel out of bondage by His mighty hand. With the powerful book The Telling by Mark Gerson, you will learn from a Hebrew perspective many hidden aspects of the Passover story that will bless your life. Get ready to encounter the God of the miraculous like you never have before!"

Book excerpt: 'So that was all it took,' I thought. 'That was all it took for me to feel like I had all the power in the world. One morning, one moment, one yellow-haired boy. It wasn't so much after all.' Chrissie knows how to steal sweets from the shop without getting caught, the best hiding place for hide-and-seek, the perfect wall for handstands. Now she has a new secret. It gives her a fizzing, sherbet feeling in her belly. She doesn't get to feel power like this at home, where food is scarce and attention scarcer. Fifteen years later, Julia is trying to mother her five-year-old daughter, Molly. She is always worried - about affording food and school shoes, about what the other mothers think of her. Most of all she worries that the social services are about to take Molly away. That's when the phone calls begin, which Julia is too afraid to answer, because it's clear the caller knows the truth about what happened all those years ago. And it's time to face the truth- is forgiveness and redemption ever possible for someone who has killed?

Download or read book Wedding Day written by Lee Won-Ro and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wedding Day is a collection of poems of Lee Won-Ro, who is the university president, chancellor of hospitals, professor, internist, cardiologist as well as a poet. This anthology contains 122 poems selected from his nine books previously published: Beyond Light and Sound (1992, Seoul, Korea); An Unusually Sunny Day (1996, Seoul, Korea); Stethoscope and Telescope (2002, Seoul, Korea); Pantomime (2004, Seoul, Korea); Pianissimo (2006, Seoul, Korea); Mosaic (2007, Seoul, Korea); Window of Moment (2009, Seoul, Korea); Map of Wind (2010, Seoul, Korea); and Navel of Universe (2011, Seoul, Korea). This book is the first publication of poet Lee Won-Ros work in English translation. Lee Won-Ros poetic world pursues the universal themes with profound aesthetic enthusiasm. His work combines knowledge and wisdom derived from his scientific background with his artistic power stemming from his creative imagination and astute intuition. Lee Won-Ros verse embroiders refined tints and serene tones on the fabric of embellished words. The poet explores the universe in conjunction with his expertise in intellectual, affective, and spiritual domains as a specialist in medicine and science. The poets imagination dares to penetrate into the realm of infinity and beyond. His world is full of dreams that are to be actualised. It is through his power of startling vision that even the deepest part of the hidden can be pinpointed and revealed. His imaginative power makes everything in the universe shine, sound, and reverberate so that his verse is lively and rich with music and colours. Lee Won-Ros poetics is not tied to earth but always points towards heaven so that his verse does not have to be unfamiliar, knotty, and painful deliberately. He lives, converses, and finally becomes one with his own verse. He resists to dwell in a twisted maze of dark and strange aesthetic world. Through wisdom and understanding, Lee Won-Ros poetics is looking forward to the universe where everything gathers together in the greatest oneness. For this reason, his poems provide restorative power and spiritual guidance with long-lasting reverberation and fragrance. Even in a desperate situation where the end is imminent, despair and abandonment can be dispelled by a conviction of a bright, new dawn on the horizon. Lee Won-Ros poems retain the capacity to pacify wounded minds and allude always to an upcoming promised land of unfathomable brilliance and joy.

Book Working Girls

  • Author : Katherine Mullin
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press

  • ISBN : 0191037834

Download or read book Working Girls written by Katherine Mullin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-05-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working Girls: Fiction, Sexuality, and Modernity investigates the significance of a new form of sexual identity at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century. Young women of the lower-middle and working classes were increasingly abandoning domestic service in favour of occupations of contested propriety. They inspired both moral unease and erotic fascination. Working Girls considers representations of four highly glamorised yet controversial types of women worker: telegraphists and typists (in newly-feminised offices), shop assistants (in the new department stores), and barmaids (in the new 'gin palaces' of major British cities). Economically emancipated (more or less) and liberated (more or less) from the protection and constraints of home and family, shop-girls, barmaids, typists, and telegraphists became mass media sensations. They energised a wide range of late-Victorian and Modernist fiction. This study will bring late-Victorian and Modernist British writers into intimate conversation with a substantial new archive of ephemeral sources often regarded as remote from high art and its concerns: popular fiction; music hall and musical comedy; beauty pageants and fairground exhibitions; visual art and early film; careers manuals; magazine and periodical journalism; moral reform crusades, Royal Commissions, and attempts at protective legislation. Working Girls argues that these seductive yet perilous young women helped writers negotiate anxieties about the state of literary culture in the United Kingdom. Crucially, they preoccupy novelists who were themselves beleaguered by anxieties over cultural capital, the shifting pressures of the literary marketplace, or controversies about the morality of fiction (often leading to the threat of censorship). In articulating questions about sexual integrity, Working Girls articulate often submerged questions about textual integrity and the role of the modern novel.
