Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Allen's Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Strawberry Plants: Grown and for Sale by W. F. Allen, Jr.; Spring 1894 One plant bore 125 berries. And ripened every one of them. They are fine flavored and deliciously sweet, and will bear shipping well. Having cultivated the berry for two years, I can say that it is the best berry in existence, both for table and market - Wm. M. Valentine. In conclusion will say that my stock was grown from plants procured direct from the introducer and are strictly pure, and being grown in a rich loam they are very large, vigorous and. Well rooted plants. My plants of this variety will average at least twice as large as those sent me by the introducer last spring and are worth much more than small, poorly-rooted plants. Robison. - Was sent to me by Mr. John Little, of Ontario, Canada. It is one of the finest growers on the place. We had single leaves of this variety almost as big as your hand and not a spot of rust to be seen. I have a great deal of faith in this new berry-although I have not seen it fruit. I shall plant quite a lot of them myself and would advise our patrons to try a few. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spring Catalogue of Strawberry Plants, 1890 All things considered, it is, so far as we have seen, the most desirable strawberry for the garden or for market since the introduction of the renowned old W'ilson. It carries well, and stands longer after picking than most berries seen In market. We have fruited it for three seasons and after the trials we have given it we are confident it is the strawberry to fill a long felt want for a late variety. Its value as a canning berry the ladies in our vicinity have found out, and they care for no other variety. The firmness of the berries, with their deep red, rich color and high flavor, makes it a most desirable and attractive berry for canning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Allen's Descriptive Catalogue of Choice Strawberry Plants: Spring, 1892 Martha. This is a market berry, originated by Wm. Lyons, of Minnesota. And named for his daughter, It was grown from mixed seed of the Cumberland, Countess and Wilson, and is supposed to be a seedling of the latter. It is the only variety saved from many thousand seedlings. It has been tested about ten years. And is now offered for the first time. I have fruited it under various conditions, and know it to be a variety of decided character. It has been grown by the acre in Minnesota. And pronounced the most profitable of all. In both plant and fruit it resembles the Wil son, and might be taken for that variety; but the blossoms are pistillate. And the flesh of the berry is thought to be redder than that of any other sort. The plant is remarkably healthy and vigorous. Its roots extend to a great depth. Enabling it to endure drouth and hard treatment equally with the Crescent. I have, with great care, grown a fine lot of strawberry plants for sale, and now I want those to know it who want to buy. I say to you what I am willing to take for them, and if you think they are worth the money, and that I am a safe person to entrust your business with there is a probability that we can do business. If I cannot give you what you want, or am not willing to give an equivalent for your money, I do not deserve your patronage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Crawford's Catalogue of New Strawberries, 1887 Just as soon as the runner is ready to root, out it off close to the parent plant and drop it in water. 0 When all are cut, fill thumb pots with good potting soil, then prepare the bud (embryo plant) by cutting the runner off, leaving on the plant that-is-to-be only a piece one and'one-half or two inches in length - like a handle. Now insert this tail end into the pot, the same as any cutting, so that the bud is about half in the soil. Press the soil firmly about the plants, place the pots in cold frames close together and water freely two or three times a day. Always cover during hot sunshine; uncover dur ing cloudy weather and at night. Our glass is coated with a paint as follows Turpentine, 1 quart; boiled oil, 1 oz.; white lead, 1 oz.; put on with a whitewash brush. The plants will be ready to turn out in from two to three weeks.
