Jackson, the able editor of that remarkable publication. With piquant combination of sharp criticism and flattering appreciation, he charmed out of me a series of short essays. One of these essays takes up in more detail the 'dumpheap theory' of the origin of cultivated plants. Several touch in one way or another on the acceptance of cities as places to live right in the middle of, an attitude that is part of Mexico's Spanish heritage. Beginning with one of Louisa May Alcott’s Hospital Sketches, originally published in 1863, this anthology offers a refreshing perspective on American literature from the latter half of the nineteenth century through the first decades of the twentieth.
