Book excerpt: This work continues the author's effort to document marriages between residents of different Virginia counties. Many sources were used to compile this listing, including church records, minister's returns, marriage licenses, newspaper articles, and court records. The marriages are arranged alphabetically by groom's surname and include records for whites as well as blacks (many of whom had acquired surnames after the Civil War). The reader may find such information as: date of marriage, parents of the participants, occupation, race, previous marital status, residence, date and place of birth and death, and military affiliation. When the name of a church in which the ceremony took place is specifically mentioned in the marriage document, it is included in this listing. The index provides easy reference to brides. A small section of Spotsylvania County births is also included, taken from an 1853 to 1868 birth registration book. The author has refined this list to include only those people for whom a full name was given, and who lived past infancy. Many Negroes listed in this birth record did not have last names; those that could be easily traced without a surname are included here. This volume also includes a map and description of local sites, such as historic buildings, churches, and cemeteries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spotsylvania County Records, 1721-1800: Being Transcriptions, From the Original Files at the County Court House, of Wills, Deeds, Administrators' and Guardians' Bonds, Marriage Licenses, and Lists of Revolutionary Pensioners The record books of the county have suffered materially from lack of care by early custodians, constant handling, removals of the court house, and vandalism during the Civil War. During this latter period they were only preserved by being boxed and buried. The earliest Will Book, covering the period 1722 to 17 49, is in an especially bad state of preservation, and the absence of Will Book C will be noted. This book, taking in the years from 1759 to 1761, was destroyed by the Federal soldiers. It will be found, however, that the wills, administrators' and guar dians' bonds covering the period of the lost book are recorded at the end of Will Book B, 1749 to 1759, the last entry in Book B being recorded 7 December, 1761, and the first entry in Book D being also dated 7 December, 1761. The loss of Will Book C, therefore, is not irrepar able. Again, though there seems to have been no Deed Book I, no records are missing, because Deed Book J begins where Book H ended. In View of these circumstances, and since the value of a transcription depends entirely upon its exactness and conformity with the original, the greatest care has been taken in the preparation of this volume. This book was released on 1995 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Bath County, in western Virginia, was formed from Augusta, Botetourt, and Greenbrier counties in 1791. It is itself the parent county for part of Alleghany County, Virginia, and Pocahontas County, West Virginia. This work consists of genealogical abstracts of the oldest surviving wills and inventories for Bath County--but that's not all. Interspersed with the inheritance records are abstracts of bonds, powers of attorney, estate settlements, articles of agreement, and other records of genealogical import. In general the will abstracts furnish the name of the testator, his county of residence, the names of witnesses and executors, the date of probate, and the names and relationships to the testator of the heirs to the will. All told, nearly 15,000 early residents of Bath County appear in these pages"--Publisher website (August 2007).
