Download or read book The Scientific View of Sport written by O. Grupe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: progress and happiness - however these terms may be understood in detail - as a significant and constitutive element of scientific inquiry. In this sense the question of the way in which sport really benefits people and contributes to their happiness, and under which individual and social conditions, is a scientific question. It assumes special significance when the fact is taken into account that in the field of sport science a general scepticism is shown towards those dogmas and pedagogical theses which take such an interpretation for granted in the absence of a firm empirical foundation and a critically evolved theory. Sport and Sport Science Sport and exercise, physical culture and education in sport (physical training), gymnastics and touring combined with some form of sport are-as the present report distinctly shows-all over the world among the most striking social phenom ena of today. At first sight they seem to be uncomplicated, clear and comprehensible for everybody; they stand for a type of solidarity which is independent of differences in ideological-political outlook, and sometimes exhibit an almost archaic intensity and attraction; they are supported by the active participation or at least the interest of very many people in many parts of the world and are endued with specific func tions, varying in importance, of a medical (therapeutical, prophylactic, rehabilitative), pedagogical, psychological and social character.

Book Rethinking Drinking and Sport

Book Paradoxes of Social Capital

Download or read book Paradoxes of Social Capital written by Myriam Cherti and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2008 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Paradoxes of Social Capital" critically examines the robustness of social capital theory as an analytical tool in explaining the various 'integration' patterns amongst Moroccans in London. The book also considers how structural factors impact on the ways in which Moroccans - across generations - sustain, access and use social capital at the levels of family, ethnic community, migrant associations and schools. Furthermore, this research elaborates on how social capital serves as an identity (re)source that is continuously negotiated and redefined through (in)active group (family, ethnic, religious and national) memberships. An original model of studying the second-generation processes of adaptation - viewed as 'transversal adaptation'- is also introduced, shifting the focus from predetermined 'integration' patterns to a circular and a longitudinal approach to 'integration', where new opportunities and constraints emerge, structured by the temporal flow of life trajectories.

The collection takes into account the economic, cultural, geographic and political interactions sport has forged and poses a series of questions: about how sport has been forged in contemporary consumer capitalism; about the manner in which it has been shaped by space and place; and the ways in which entrepreneurs, sportspeople and artists have represented sporting competition. The collection will help both students and scholars conceptualise sporting networks, and will be of interest to those working in multiple fields. Book Event Portfolio Planning and Management

Download or read book Event Portfolio Planning and Management written by Vassilios Ziakas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities and regions around the world increasingly capitalize on a series of events aimed at optimizing their reach and outcomes. How then can a series of different events be developed and harnessed? What are the conditions and the means by which synergies and collaboration among different events and their stakeholders can be fostered? This book for the first time explores how managers and host communities can synergize sport, cultural and other planned events in a portfolio in order to attain, magnify and sustain their outcomes. The incorporation of different events into a portfolio requires an integrative way of viewing the different community purposes that they serve in unison. This book elaborates on this holistic approach by developing an integrative theoretical framework for conceptualizing event portfolios, and examining their challenges and prospects as well as potential as tools for sustainable development. It therefore presents the foundations of event portfolio planning, the patterns of inter-organizational relationships within collaborative events networks that foster the conditions for community capacity-building and the requirements for the design and development of event portfolios. Topics are considered from varying perspectives and examples of emerging event portfolios from a range of geographical regions are integrated throughout. Uniquely providing a holistic framework for planning and managing a series of events this is essential reading for all those interested in Events Policy, Planning and Management.
