Book Gamle Norge and Nineteenth Century British Women Travellers in Norway

Download or read book Gamle Norge and Nineteenth Century British Women Travellers in Norway written by Kathryn Walchester and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘Gamle Norge and Nineteenth-Century British Women Travellers in Norway’ presents an account of the development of tourism in nineteenth-century Norway and considers the ways in which women travellers depicted their travels to the region. Tracing the motivations of various groups of women travellers, such as sportswomen, tourists and aristocrats, this book argues that in their writing, Norway forms a counterpoint to Victorian Britain: a place of freedom and possibility.

Book Sport and Democracy in the Ancient and Modern Worlds

Download or read book Sport and Democracy in the Ancient and Modern Worlds written by Paul Christesen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-10-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the relationship between sport and democratization. Drawing on sociological and historical methodologies, it provides a framework for understanding how sport affects the level of egalitarianism in the society in which it is played. The author distinguishes between horizontal sport, which embodies and fosters egalitarian relations, and vertical sport, which embodies and fosters hierarchical relations. Christesen also differentiates between societies in which sport is played and watched on a mass scale and those in which it is an ancillary activity. Using ancient Greece and nineteenth-century Britain as case studies, Christesen analyzes how these variables interact and finds that horizontal mass sport has the capacity to both promote and inhibit democratization at a societal level. He concludes that horizontal mass sport tends to reinforce and extend democratization.

Book Sport Policy

Download or read book Sport Policy written by Nils Asle Bergsgard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-11-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport Policy: a comparative analysis of stability and change builds on the growing general interest in the comparative study of sport policy and the more specific interest in processes of policy change and issues associated with policy convergence. In stark contrast to many other areas of public policy such as education, personal welfare and health care there is a paucity of theoretically informed comparative studies in sport. Over recent years there has been a steady increase in public investment in sport and frequently, as a consequence, a sharper debate about how public resources should be used. However, there has been little analysis of the factors that shape the generation of domestic sport policy and little attempt to identify the variables that might influence the policy process. Sport Policy: a comparative analysis of stability and change provides a theoretically informed analysis of the sports systems in Canada, England, Germany and Norway. These economically advanced countries are carefully selected to enable the investigation of the significance of variables and because they share a number of socio-economic and sports-related characteristics, which provides the text with a unique breadth and depth of coverage. This text is a vital addition to the general paucity of literature in this area and is written by an internationally renowned author team.

Book Stakeholder Analysis and Sport Organisations

Download or read book Stakeholder Analysis and Sport Organisations written by Anna-Maria Strittmatter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-26 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a critical examination of the origins and development of stakeholder theory within sport management research and expands the existing literature by providing insights on stakeholding in sport from various perspectives, such as governance, communication and marketing. Examining cases from around the world and from a wide range of different sporting contexts, each chapter reflects on key insights derived from stakeholder theory before offering an analysis of the limitations of the theory and the ways in which it might be fruitfully extended or developed. It offers suggestions on how the literature on stakeholding in sport can be advanced in order to provide knowledge relevant not only to sport studies but also to organisation theory more broadly and points to future avenues of inquiry in order to extend the reach of stakeholder theory and other inter-organisational perspectives in sport management research. Stakeholder Analysis and Sport Organisations is fascinating reading for any advanced student, researcher, policy-maker or practitioner with an interest in sport management, sport governance, sport development or organisational theory.
