Download or read book Storks Ibises and Spoonbills of the World written by James Hancock and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everything you ever wanted to know about storks, ibises and spoonbills. Some of the world's largest and most spectacular birds are to be found among this group of wading birds. Tragically, they also include many of the world's most endangered species, as changes in land use erode their wetland habitats. Some like the White Stork have lived alongside humans for hundreds of years and are well known from numerous studies. Others, like the Storm's stork and ibises of West Africa, South-East Asia and South America live so secluded a life in the remote corners of the globe that they will probably be extinct before even the most basic details of their biology are known. In this monograph, three authors and two artists have combined their skills to capture what is known of this group of wading birds. The text opens with general chapters on taxonomy and feeding, breeding and behaviour, followed by detailed coverage of each species.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good morning, I’m Milo Nelson. This name is my pseudonym, and all of the characters and places in this book are all also pseudonyms. In my years of practicing veterinary medicine, I meet a lot of very unusual people who walk through the clinic. People are willing to tell their life with barbers, bartenders and veterinarians. More importantly, I sit here before you as the luckiest man in the world. A mere few feet away, the love of my life and soul mate for more than forever is relaxing in the morning sun with a cup of coffee and reading a book. She is more beautiful today than she was the first time I met her. Frannie and I have been together since our first date in high school. We have shared great adventures, frightening challenges, and two lives well spent. We wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for an old vet school buddy who does a lot of writing…ME, yep, Dr. Paul. I remember my stories, and I put it on paper. By the way, you won’t find any veterinarian with the name Milo Nelson, and the only other Pelican Key is on Key Largo, or the one on Saint Maartan. Adios, I have to meet my old buddy on our back porch, so I can tell him some more stories from our other special remote villages…there are places like Pelican Key…Somewhere. Download or read book Avian Reservoirs written by Frédéric Keck and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-17 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After experiencing the SARS outbreak in 2003, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Taiwan all invested in various techniques to mitigate future pandemics involving myriad cross-species interactions between humans and birds. In some locations microbiologists allied with veterinarians and birdwatchers to follow the mutations of flu viruses in birds and humans and create preparedness strategies, while in others, public health officials worked toward preventing pandemics by killing thousands of birds. In Avian Reservoirs Frédéric Keck offers a comparative analysis of these responses, tracing how the anticipation of bird flu pandemics has changed relations between birds and humans in China. Drawing on anthropological theory and ethnographic fieldwork, Keck demonstrates that varied strategies dealing with the threat of pandemics—stockpiling vaccines and samples in Taiwan, simulating pandemics in Singapore, and monitoring viruses and disease vectors in Hong Kong—reflect local geopolitical relations to mainland China. In outlining how interactions among pathogens, birds, and humans shape the way people imagine future pandemics, Keck illuminates how interspecies relations are crucial for protecting against such threats.
