Book Spontaneous Intracerebral Haematomas

Download or read book Spontaneous Intracerebral Haematomas written by H.W. Pia and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous intracerebral haemorrhages are the most dangerous complication of cerebral vascular disease. Because of their frequency and the fact that they lead to serious injuries, prolonged disabilities and, often, death, they have acquired an enormous significance, both medically and socially. Their precise diagnosis, location, wide extent and accomp~ying manifestations were for a very long time uncertain and, in small and deeply situated haematomas, these factors were impossible to determine. Diagnosis was confirmed by the clinical picture, by angiography and sometimes by ventriculography and included, in the main, both lobar and more extensive haematomas. The results of operative treatment following the first attempt of H. Cushing in 1903 were poor and remained unsatisfactory in spite of the endeavours of numerous authors (Guillaume et al. 1956; Lazorthes 1956; McKissock et al. 1959; Luessenhop 1967 and many others). Especially for the most frequent and typically hypertensive haematomas in the region of the internal, capsule, the opinion was often expressed that operative treatment was useless.

Book New Insights in Intracerebral Hemorrhage

Download or read book New Insights in Intracerebral Hemorrhage written by K. Toyoda and published by Karger Medical and Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age-standardized mortality rate for hemorrhagic stroke has decreased worldwide over the past two decades, but incidence, number of deaths, and lost disability-adjusted life-years (DALY) continue to increase. Moreover, hemorrhagic stroke occurs half as frequently globally as ischemic stroke, but causes significantly more deaths and lost DALY. Milestone studies of the past decade - STICH, FAST, and INTERACT2 - indicate the importance of hyperacute care for intracerebral hemorrhage; despite this, there is to date no established strategy for patients analogous to reperfusion therapy for ischemic stroke. This book, written by world-renowned experts, covers all current topics related to the diagnosis and management of intracerebral hemorrhage. It will contribute to an improved understanding of current and future aspects concerning optimal management of patients. This is a comprehensive, up-to-date resource for neurologists, neurosurgeons and trainees.

Book excerpt: A practical textbook, based on a problem-oriented workflow, that will improve patients' likelihood of full recovery from stroke and prevent future strokes from occurring Stroke is the leading cause of adult disability and is in the top five causes of death globally. Warlow's Stroke: Practical Management, 4th Edition takes a problem-oriented approach and addresses the questions posed by a stroke patient in the order they are likely to present in clinical practice, for instance, 'Is it a stroke?', 'What sort of stroke?', 'What caused it?', and 'What can be done about it?'. Beginning with chapters phrased as questions, the book walks the reader through a standard clinical workflow, exploring the practical skills and assessment required at each stage of patient management. Early chapters cover: locating the vascular lesion, identifying the involved arterial territory, the role imaging should play, and the application thereof. Subsequent chapters look at what causes a transient or persistent ischemic event, an intracerebral hemorrhage and a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Unusual causes of ischemic stroke and transient ischemic attack are also covered. The book then presents a practical approach to the management of stroke and transient ischemic attack; offers specific treatments for acute ischemic stroke and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage; provides ways for professionals to prevent first or recurrent stroke; and more. Final chapters of the book discuss rehabilitation after stroke, how patients and carers can be supported in the short term and long term, prevention of recurrent stroke, and the organization of stroke services.
