Book Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities

Download or read book Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities written by Hiroyuki Yokoyama and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the increasing importance of microcavities, device physics or the observable phenomena in optical microcavities such as enhanced or inhibited spontaneous emission and its relation with the laser oscillation has not been systematically well-described-until now. Spontaneous Emission and Laser Oscillation in Microcavities presents the basics of optical microcavities. The volume is divided into ten chapters, each written by respected authorities in their areas. The book surveys several methods describing free space spontaneous emission and discusses changes in the feature due to the presence of a cavity. The effect of dephasing of vacuum fields on spontaneous emission in a microcavity and the effects of atomic broadening on spontaneous emission in an optical microcavity are examined. The book details the splitting in transmission peaks of planar microcavities containing semiconductor quantum wells. A simple but useful way to consider the change in the spontaneous emission rate from the viewpoint of mode density alteration by wavelength-sized cavities is provided. Authors also discuss the spontaneous emission in dielectric planar microcavities. Spontaneous emission in microcavity surface emitting lasers is covered, as are the effects of electron confinement in semiconductor quantum wells, wires, and boxes also given. The volume extends the controlling spontaneous emission phenomenon to laser oscillation. Starting from the Fermi golden rule, the microcavity laser rate equations are derived, and the oscillation characteristics are analyzed. Recent progress in optical microcavity experiments is summarized, and the applicability in massively optical parallel processing systems and demands for the device performance are explored. This volume is extremely useful as a textbook for graduate and postgraduate students and works well as a unique reference for researchers beginning to study in the field.

Book Spontaneous Emission in Microcavity Lasers

Download or read book Spontaneous Emission in Microcavity Lasers written by Dustin P. Ziegler and published by . This book was released on 1997-12-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An understanding of spontaneous emission processes within microcavities is crucial in addressing the need to make tomorrow's microlasers more efficient. One approach to improving the device efficiency is to reduce the threshold input energy at which lasing begins to occur. It has been suggested that the threshold in a microcavity laser can be decreased by increasing the fraction of spontaneous emission into the lasing mode, this can be accomplished by preferentially coupling the gain medium of the laser to the electromagnetic cavity mode of interest. It therefore becomes necessary to understand the mechanism by which this coupling takes place. This research develops a fully quantum mechanical description of the interaction between a gain medium medeled as a two level atom and a multimode electromagnetic field in a microcavity. Atomic transition probabilities are computed for systems in which the atom couples through a single photon process to electromagnetic cavity modes which range in number from two to 2000. Calculations performed for cavities with widely spaced modes demonstrate that atoms exhibit Jaynes Cummings behavior when closely tuned to one mode. Detuning of the atom from the mode inhibits the exchange of energy, while increasing the strength of the coupling to the mode amplifies this exchange. Two level systems strongly coupled to many closely spaced modes exhibit spontaneous emission rates characteristic of an atom in free space.

Book Optical Physics of Microcavity Surface Emitting Lasers

Download or read book Optical Physics of Microcavity Surface Emitting Lasers written by Michael J. Noble and published by . This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of an in-depth theoretical analysis of the optical impact of transverse index confinement on the lasing modes of microcavity surface emitting lasers. Two different variational techniques were employed to calculate the relevant optical laser parameters: (1) modal resonance, field profile, (2) confinement factor, and (3) threshold gain. Through a semianalytic field analysis, two new confinement related effects were discovered: (1) a polarization dependent change in mirror reflectance with aperture radius, and (2) a mode dependent blueshift. Through a numerical field analysis, the physical mechanisms governing diffraction were ascertained. These are: (1) the transverse confinement of the optical mode, the degree of tilt of the mode propagation vector away from normal to the mirror surfaces, and (2) the density of parasitic modes in the spectral vicinity of the lasing mode. Based on these results, a new semianalytic technique was derived for estimating diffraction loss via rigorous coupling to the parasitic modes. Finally, this model was combined with a gain model and a new mode density model to compute spontaneous emission rate, light verses current, threshold current, and spontaneous emission factors for a low threshold oxide-apertured device.

Book Enhanced and Inhibited Spontaneous Emission in Vertical Microcavity Structures with Two Kinds of GaAs AlGaAs Quantum Wells

Download or read book Enhanced and Inhibited Spontaneous Emission in Vertical Microcavity Structures with Two Kinds of GaAs AlGaAs Quantum Wells written by Y. Arakawa and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Spontaneous emission is not an immutable interaction between a material and the vacuum field. In fact, enhancement and inhibition of spontaneous emission rates through change in the cavity have been observed in the fluorescence of dye molecules deposited in the all part of the Fabry-Perot resonator. When the cavity length is smaller than the half wavelength of the fluorescence (Lambda/2), the spontaneous emission is inhibited. Otherwise it is enhanced. Thus the cavity effects can control the interaction between atoms and vacuum fields to the resonant mode, changing the emission rate into the resonator modes dramatically by tuning the resonator. Moreover, the difference in the mode densities between the enhancement and the inhibition also affects the change in the spontaneous emission lifetime. On the other hand, these enhancement and inhibition of the spontaneous emission have been also investigated in the semiconductor lasers, as suggested by Yablonovitch. Recently, Yamamoto. demonstrated such enhancement and inhibition of the spontaneous emission by preparing both Lambda- and lambda/2vertical cavity lasers which are epitaxially grown on two different wafers.

Book Confined Electrons and Photons

Download or read book Confined Electrons and Photons written by Elias Burstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 900 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The optical properties of semiconductors have played an important role since the identification of semiconductors as "small" bandgap materials in the thinies, due both to their fundamental interest as a class of solids baving specific optical propenies and to their many important applications. On the former aspect we can cite the fundamental edge absorption and its assignment to direct or indirect transitions, many-body effects as revealed by exciton formation and photoconductivity. On the latter aspect, large-scale applications sucb as LEDs and lasers, photovoltaic converters, photodetectors, electro-optics and non-linear optic devices, come to mind. The eighties saw a revitalization of the whole field due to the advent of heterostructures of lower-dimensionality, mainly two-dimensional quantum wells, which through their enhanced photon-matter interaction yielded new devices with unsurpassed performance. Although many of the basic phenomena were evidenced through the seventies, it was this impact on applications which in turn led to such a massive investment in fabrication tools, thanks to which many new structures and materials were studied, yielding funher advances in fundamental physics.
