It is also the home of fleeing war criminals, a depository for the Nazis' stolen riches, and the latest post for Army investigator Mason Collins. When a friend who fought alongside Mason tells him about a plot by a group of powerful men-and is killed soon afterward-it's clear that Mason must make his investigation as quick and quiet as possible for his own safety. For someone up high is pulling strings to prevent him from discovering the truth..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Victory, first published in 2005, explores the views of eight leaders of the major powers of World War II - Hitler, Mussolini, Tojo, Chiang Kai-shek, Stalin, Churchill, de Gaulle, and Roosevelt. He compares their visions of the future in the event of victory. While the leaders primarily focused on fighting and winning the war, their decisions were often shaped by their aspirations for the future. What emerges is a startling picture of postwar worlds. After exterminating the Jews, Hitler intended for all Slavs to die so Germans could inhabit Eastern Europe. Mussolini and Hitler wanted extensive colonies in Africa. Churchill hoped for the re-emergence of British and French empires. De Gaulle wanted to annex the northwest corner of Italy. Stalin wanted to control Eastern Europe. Roosevelt's vision included establishing the United Nations. Weinberg's comparison of the individual portraits of the war-time leaders is a highly original and compelling study of history that might have been.

Book The Spoils of War

Download or read book The Spoils of War written by Andrew Cockburn and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why does the United States go to war?—a leading Harper’s commentator on U.S. foreign affairs searches for answers. A withering exposé of runaway military spending and the private economic interests funding the U.S. war machine—for fans of Rachel Maddow and Democracy Now! America has a long tradition of justifying war as the defense of democracy. The War on Terror was waged to protect the West from the dangers of Islamists. The US soldiers stationed in over 800 locations across the world are meant to be the righteous arbiters of justice. Against this background, Andrew Cockburn brilliantly dissects the true intentions behind Washington’s martial appetites. The American war machine can only be understood in terms of the private passions and interests of those who control it—principally a passionate interest in money. Thus, as Cockburn witheringly reports, Washington expanded NATO to satisfy an arms manufacturer’s urgent financial requirements; the US Navy’s Pacific fleet deployments were for years dictated by a corrupt contractor who bribed high-ranking officers with cash and prostitutes; senior Marine commanders agreed to a troop surge in Afghanistan in 2017 for budgetary reasons. Based on years of wide-ranging research, Cockburn lays bare the ugly reality of the largest military machine in history: as profoundly squalid as it is terrifyingly deadly.

Book War and Sacrifice

Download or read book War and Sacrifice written by Tony Pollard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume covers conflicts from sub-Neolithic Finland to early Modern Ireland, looking at the archaeological evidence for conflict. This evidence ranges from excavation, to osteology, to artefacts, to linguistics, bringing together varying approaches to the study of conflict in the past. Most of the papers relate to prehistory, starting with the sub-Neolithic, running through the Bronze Age and into the Iron Age. There are also papers on Irish conflict archaeology, running from the sixteenth century AD to the 1916 Easter Rising. The prehistoric papers are significant in examining the evidence forensically and trying to establish whether conflict is the best explanation for particular phenomena, while the Irish papers open the rich landscape of conflict in Ireland, with all of the possibilities for investigating conflict that can be found.

Book Zuo Tradition Zuozhuan

Download or read book Zuo Tradition Zuozhuan written by and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2017-05-01 with total page 2243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zuo Tradition (Zuozhuan; sometimes called The Zuo Commentary) is Chinas first great work of history. It consists of two interwoven texts - the Spring and Autumn Annals (Chunqiu, a terse annalistic record) and a vast web of narratives and speeches that add context and interpretation to the Annals. Completed by about 300 BCE, it is the longest and one of the most difficult texts surviving from pre-imperial times. It has been as important to the foundation and preservation of Chinese culture as the historical books of the Hebrew Bible have been to the Jewish and Christian traditions. It has shaped notions of history, justice, and the significance of human action in the Chinese tradition perhaps more so than any comparable work of Latin or Greek historiography has done to Western civilization. This translation, accompanied by the original text, an introduction, and annotations, will finally make Zuozhuan accessible to all.
