Book excerpt: How the startling image of an anti-war protested spitting on a uniformed veteran misrepresented the narrative of Vietnam War political debate One of the most resilient images of the Vietnam era is that of the anti-war protester — often a woman — spitting on the uniformed veteran just off the plane. The lingering potency of this icon was evident during the Gulf War, when war supporters invoked it to discredit their opposition. In this startling book, Jerry Lembcke demonstrates that not a single incident of this sort has been convincingly documented. Rather, the anti-war Left saw in veterans a natural ally, and the relationship between anti-war forces and most veterans was defined by mutual support. Indeed one soldier wrote angrily to Vice President Spiro Agnew that the only Americans who seemed concerned about the soldier's welfare were the anti-war activists. While the veterans were sometimes made to feel uncomfortable about their service, this sense of unease was, Lembcke argues, more often rooted in the political practices of the Right. Tracing a range of conflicts in the twentieth century, the book illustrates how regimes engaged in unpopular conflicts often vilify their domestic opponents for "stabbing the boys in the back." Concluding with an account of the powerful role played by Hollywood in cementing the myth of the betrayed veteran through such films as Coming Home, Taxi Driver, and Rambo, Jerry Lembcke's book stands as one of the most important, original, and controversial works of cultural history in recent years.

Book Spitting in the Soup

Download or read book Spitting in the Soup written by Mark Johnson and published by VeloPress. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doping is as old as organized sports. From baseball to horse racing, cycling to track and field, drugs have been used to enhance performance for 150 years. For much of that time, doping to do better was expected. It was doping to throw a game that stirred outrage. Today, though, athletes are vilified for using performance-enhancing drugs. Damned as moral deviants who shred the fair-play fabric, dopers are an affront to the athletes who don’t take shortcuts. But this tidy view swindles sports fans. While we may want the world sorted into villains and victims, putting the blame on athletes alone ignores decades of history in which teams, coaches, governments, the media, scientists, sponsors, sports federations, and even spectators have played a role. The truth about doping in sports is messy and shocking because it holds a mirror to our own reluctance to spit in the soupthat is, to tell the truth about the spectacle we crave. In Spitting in the Soup, sports journalist Mark Johnson explores how the deals made behind closed doors keep drugs in sports. Johnson unwinds the doping culture from the early days, when pills meant progress, and uncovers the complex relationships that underlie elite sports culturethe essence of which is not to play fair but to push the boundaries of human performance. It’s easy to assume that drugs in sports have always been frowned upon, but that’s not true. Drugs in sports are old. It’s banning drugs in sports that is new. Spitting in the Soup offers a bitingly honest, clear-eyed look at why that’s so, and what it will take to kick pills out of the locker room once and for all.

Book Spit Three Times

Download or read book Spit Three Times written by Davide Reviati and published by Seven Stories Press. This book was released on 2020-06-16 with total page 578 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Carlo Boscarato Prize 2016 Winner of the Lo Straniero Prize 2016 Winner of the Attilio Micheluzzi Prize for Best Writing 2017 Sélection Officielle Angoulême 2018 In a forsaken corner of the Italian countryside, Guido and his friends Moreno and Katango spin out their days in languor and boredom intermixed with desire and, occasionally, violence. Nearby live the Stančič, a family of Romani who escaped the communist regime of Marshal Tito and settled here just after World War II. Guido’s coming-of-age is changed by the evolving relationship that the rural town has with this group of outsiders, these “gypsies.” The author is unsparing in his depiction of the townspeople’s cruelty. And yet, there are also many instances of solidarity between Guido’s community and the Stančič. Reviati’s first book in English, Spit Three Times is an extraordinary story of young men, disillusioned and trying to find their way, caught in the breach between post-war exuberance and the stagnation of the early twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: "Heartbreakingly beautiful writing; sometimes funny, sometimes shattering—always revolutionary. Truly amazing collection!"--Margaret Cho "Sister Spit is like the underground railroad for burgeoning queer writers. Not only in the van, but in the audiences trapped in the hinterlands of America and looking to escape. Sister Spit saves lives."--Justin Vivian Bond, author of TANGO: My Childhood, Backwards and in High Heels A collection of writing and artwork from the irreverent, flagrantly queer, hilariously feminist, tough-talking, genre-busting ruffians who have toured with the legendary Sister Spit. Co-founded in 1997 by award-winning writer Michelle Tea, Sister Spit is an underground cultural institution, a gender-bending writers' cabaret that brings a changing roster of both emerging writers and some of the most important queer and counterculture artists of the day to universities, art galleries, community spaces, and other venues across the country and worldwide. Sister Spit: Writing, Rants and Reminiscence from the Road captures the provocative, politicized, and risk-taking elements that characterize the Sister Spit aesthetic, stamping the raw energy and signature style of the live show onto the page. Bratty poets and failed priestesses, punk angst and tough love, too much to drink and tattooed timelines—this anthology captures it all in a collection of poetry, personal narrative, fiction, and artwork. Featuring a who's who of queer and queer-centric writers and artists, the collection functions as a travelog, a historical document, and a yearbook from irreverent graduates of the school of hard knocks. Focuses on data developed after 1985 for users under the age of 19, and found spit tobacco use persists as a national health problem. Book Don t Swallow Your Pride Spit It Out

Download or read book Don t Swallow Your Pride Spit It Out written by B. J. Smith and published by Tate Pub & Enterprises Llc. This book was released on 2008-10 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Divine Favor with God and man is clearly taught in the Bible. It tells us that no matter how much favor we have received God will give more favor. In Don't Swallow your Pride...Spit it Out - The Key to Abundant Favor with God and Man, B. J. Smith shows us that pride is at the top of God's prerequisites to finding favor with God and man. His book is more than just interesting reading, it is a study manual to be meditated upon again and again. The subject matter of humility and pride are usually taught in generalities, but B. J. Smith addresses this subject in specifics. You will learn that humility is not an inferiority complex that lessens one's sense of importance and value. He contends that the central truth of scripture is that God gives favor to the humble. His prayer is that through Don't Swallow Your Pride...Spit it Out, every reader will increase in favor with God and man. B. J. Smith has been in the pastoral ministry for more than forty-six years pasturing churches in Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana. During his pastoral ministries he has preached at conventions, seminars, and retreats. He was the founding pastor of Northside Assembly in Texarkana, Texas where he pastored for twenty-nine years until his retirement. Even though he spends much of his time writing, he is still preaching in various churches.
