Book excerpt: It's the long, hot summer of 1968. For ten-year-old Kathleen Slaven and her pals, the school holidays beckon. Into their run-down village in the west of Scotland arrives Tony, a real American kid, like the ones from the movies, ready to lead them into all kinds of adventure: gaining sweet revenge on their sadistic teacher Miss Grant on a trip to Ayr, discovering the unsettling secrets of 'Shaggy Island', and coming up with ways to outwit the people who screw up their lives - like the local parish priest Father Flynn. But the world they live in is a precarious one. And while they escape by playing at TV heroes and film stars, their mothers grow old before their time on broken promises, and fathers make a living in the coal mines or 'digging ditches, in the pissing rain', often boozing or gambling the wages away while their families go hungry. In an impoverished community, suffering and violence are never far from home. And even the optimism and escapism of their years cannot protect the children from the tragedies of life.

Book A Commentary on Nietzsche s Ecce Homo

Download or read book A Commentary on Nietzsche s Ecce Homo written by Thomas Steinbuch and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1994 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this commentary on chapter one, "Why I am So Wise," of Nietzsche's Ecce Homo, the author dispels the long-standing impression that Ecce Homo is an irrational book in which the madness that claimed Nietzsche only months after he began writing it had already begun its work. Ecce Homo, it is alleged, is not egotistical, or narcissistic, or megalomaniacal. It is not a work of madness. In his linear exposition of this first chapter, the author presents Nietzsche's revelation of the tragic fact that his very aliveness was in a state of being overwhelmed, consumed, by powerful unconscious emotion, the condition he called decadence. Nietzsche's madness may have caused him to lose perspective on the meaning of having dwelt in "a world of exalted and delicate things," as he writes of himself in Ecce, but the original experience of elevation that comes of an abundance of life, of a surplus of life, certainly was not pathological.

The majority of the tales originated before the 1920s, most going back to the gold rush days and earlier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It’s 1923 in Manhattan’s Lower East Side, where a risky romance between a mistreated young woman and a boxer owned by the mob motivates self-discovery, loyalty toward passions, and a life-threatening struggle for freedom. A mundane life is far from Angelina’s only suffrage. Pitying the monster that once loved her as a daughter is just as much a captivity as his fist to her face. Fear locks her door; daring to dream is her key. For fisherman Vincent, unsought ties with the world of organized crime have him boxing in a speakeasy notorious for its gambling on the fights. To maintain the security and success of his father’s longtime fishing business and the well-being of everyone close to him, Vincent must remain enslaved to a ruthless and powerful mob leader. Face to the Wind is a tender romance, a “jazz-age” journey that unfolds through the eyes of two young lovers with a timeless determination to be together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1955 and 1987, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Glacier was the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the free world. Consequently, it was often given the most difficult and dangerous Antarctic missions. This is the dramatic first-person account of its most legendary voyage. In 1970, the author was the Chief Medical Officer on the Glacier when it became trapped deep in the Weddell Sea, pressured by 100 miles of wind-blown icepack. Glacier was beset within seventy miles of where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, was imprisoned in 1915. His stout wooden ship succumbed to the crushing pressure of the infamous Weddell Sea pack ice and sank, leading to an unbelievable two-year saga of hardship, heroism and survival. The sailors aboard the Glacier feared they would suffer Shackleton’s fate, or one even worse. Freakishly good luck eventually saved the Glacier from destruction in the crushing ice pack, only to experience a three-hour fire that nearly killed one of the crew, followed by eighty foot waves that came close to capsizing the ship. Wind, Fire, and Ice is a story about a physician who starts out with a set of false assumptions—namely that he is going have an easy assignment and see numerous exotic ports, but then slowly comes to realize a much different hard reality.

Book Aces in the Wind

  • Author : David Lee Cooper
  • Publisher : Fulton Books, Inc.

  • ISBN : 1646548833
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Aces in the Wind written by David Lee Cooper and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of family trees. The book weaves together the tangle of branches that hold the characters in their grasp. The turbulent times of the Great Depression, WWII, and the social change of the 1960s serve merely as the backdrop to these peoples' lives. The reader meets James at pivotal points in his life. We begin by watching the relationship he has with his son. Then we veer back to James's father and how they live. There are decisions made, and great strengths and weaknesses are within each character. The women are complex and are the nails that hold the framework of these characters' lives. The characters deal with life head on and try to engage the better parts of their nature to navigate the waters of life. Like a grand poker game, the stakes are high and the players are serious. Some characters grow beyond themselves, while others halt and falter along the way. When the hands are shown and the money is paid, sometimes it comes down to how many aces are in the wind.

And every morning he thanked God for his good fortune. But things were not as they appeared. The day started as normal. Both he and his wife had fulfilled their respective obligations for the day, had finished dinner and had just taken their coffee to the veranda when Brownie's cell chirped. Unknown. Absentmindedly, he answered. Their lives would never be the same.
